GAME OF THE WEEK
Michigan 28 … at Notre Dame
24
What Happened: Denard Robinson set a Michigan record with 502
yards of total offense, but his final two yards, on
a scoring run with 27 seconds, were the most
important as they gave the Wolverine the lead for
good. Notre Dame had one last chance as it marched
into scoring range, but Dayne Crist’s last gasp
touchdown attempt sailed out of the end zone. On a
day with several big plays, Robinson came up with
the longest scoring run in the history of Notre Dame
stadium with an 87-yarder to give the Wolverines a
21-7 halftime lead, but the Irish came back with 17
straight points with T.J. Jones taking a Crist pass
53 yards for a score and Kyle Rudolph scoring on a
95-yard play for a three point lead with 3:41 to
play. Robinson needed a fourth down run to keep the
final drive alive as he took the offense 72 yards in
12 plays for the winning score. Manti Teo made 13
tackles for Notre Dame while James Mouton paced the
Wolverines with 13.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Michigan QB Denard
Robinson completed 24-of-40 passes for 244 yards and
a touchdown, and he ran 28 times for 258 yards and
two scores in the win over Notre Dame.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Illinois … at Illinois 35 … Southern Illinois 3 … The offense needs to revolve around Mikel LeShoure. Nathan Scheelhaase is a good talent with the potential to be a special playmaker, but the receivers are mediocre and the strength is in the backfield. Illinois wants to rotate its backs, but LeShoure showed why he needs to be fed the ball with a great game against Southern Illinois. Against Northern Illinois, he has to keep the dangerous Huskie offense off the field by being a workhorse. The Illini won this week without a problem, but the three turnovers were way too many. Scheelhaase and the Illini attack aren’t good enough to kill themselves with mistakes.
Indiana … Didn’t Play This Week
Iowa … at Iowa 35 … Iowa State 7 … It has only been two games, but everything is clicking better than the coaching staff could’ve hoped for. Ricky Stanzi is playing well and isn’t making mistakes, and there’s a new star of the show in Adam Robinson who’s playing well enough to keep Jewel Hampton as a No. 2 option. The defense shut down the Iowa State running game and the rivalry battle was never in doubt … watch out. When things appear to be working, that’s when the clunker comes, and Iowa will have its hands full with an athletic and talented Arizona squad. Win that in a walk, and then it’s really time to put the Hawkeyes in the discussion for really, really big things.
Michigan … Michigan 28 … at Notre Dame 24 … For the second straight week, Denard Robinson ran wild and will get all the headlines and all the accolades. For the second straight week, the Michigan offensive line deserves credit for doing a phenomenal job of opening up the holes needed for Robinson to get to the second level, and the receivers did a great job of blocking down the field. There are still plenty of concerns on defense with two big pass plays allowed by a depleted secondary, but getting UMass and Bowling Green over the next two weeks should give everyone time to improve.
Michigan State … Michigan State 30 … at Florida Atlantic 17 … The Spartan running game has been established over the first two games in easy wins over Western Michigan and Florida Atlantic, and now it can’t abandon the power game with Notre Dame coming up. Eventually the passing game will open things up like it did last year, but with a 1-2 punch in Edwin Baker and freshman Le’Veon Bell, there’s no reason to not stick with what’s working. However, Kirk Cousins has to be more effective than the 9-of-17 passing day he had against FAU. He didn’t exactly open things up, but he’ll have to soon.
Minnesota … South Dakota 41 … at Minnesota 38 … And now it’s going to take something special for Tim Brewster to stay around. To lose to an FCS team – again – is inexcusable for a program that’s supposed to be hitting its stride. The offense was fine, Duane Bennett ran well and O.J. Gray’s time at receiver worked to get his athleticism and skill on the field, but the defense was a disaster against Dante Warren and the South Dakota spread, and things aren’t going to get better. The linebackers are going to be a major sticking point all year, and with USC coming to town and with the Northern Illinois running game to follow, this could be an ugly few weeks before having to go to Wisconsin to make things worse.
Northwestern … at Northwestern 37 … Illinois State 3 … Dan Persa was nearly perfect against Illinois State, and he’ll have to be considering the running game isn’t going to be consistent. The 96 rushing yards from Arby Fields was a plus, but the Wildcat offense is going to rely on the short to midrange passing game week after week. Tight end/wide receiver Drake Dunsmore came up with a nice game, and the offense put the game away early, like it was supposed to do. Rice will provide a bit more of a challenge, but not much of one with the Wildcat lines sure to control the action. With Minnesota struggling, a 5-0 start is a must before hosting Purdue.
Ohio State … at Ohio State 36 … Miami 24 … It wasn’t the best of performances, and there’s a lot of work to do on the special teams after getting a kick blocked for a score last week and with two returns allowed for scores this week, but the defense made the big plays it needed to and the offense capitalized. Terrelle Pryor had to carry too much of the offense with Dan Herron and Brandon Saine getting bottled up more often than not, and DeVier Posey didn’t do much outside of one big catch. It was a double digit win over a dangerous Miami team, so there’s not too much to get in a twist over, but now it’s time to work out any and all problems with Ohio and Eastern Michigan up before going to Illinois.
Penn State … at Alabama 24 … Penn State 3 … Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country for a reason. The Tide might not be fully jelled on defense, but it’s well-coached enough to have given Robert Bolden fits in his first game in a hostile environment. The running game simply isn’t working as well as it should with just 127 yards and Evan Royster only getting nine carries for 32 yards, but the passing game has to help out and that means there can’t be so many dropped passes and Bolden has to be more consistent. He will be over the next few weeks against Kent State and Temple.
Purdue … at Purdue 31 … Western Illinois 21 … Purdue might have won the battle against Western Illinois, but it lost a major player with WR Keith Smith suffering an injured right knee. Now the ground game will have to get rolling without Ralph Bolden, and it’ll have to get the passing attack going without its No. 1 target. That means Robert Marve has to do even more, and he’ll have two games against Ball State and Toledo to take on the responsibility before getting a week off. The Boilermakers struggled way too much against the Leathernecks, but it’s a win to help erase the Notre Dame loss a bit. For all the problems on offense, the defense is showing promise with DE Ryan Kerrigan turning in an All-America season after just two weeks.
Wisconsin … at Wisconsin 27 … San Jose State 14 … Wisconsin has to be sharper. Cupcake games are used to get all the parts working, but the Badgers were just off enough against San Jose State to allow the coaching staff to spend the week screaming before the Arizona State game. UW should’ve won this game by 40, and it dominated throughout, but there were dropped balls, four fumbles (losing one) including one through the end zone by freshman RB James White, and a let down by the D on a late drive for the second week in a row. QB Scott Tolzien had a decent game, but he’s not playing at a high level like last year and he needs to do a better job of driving his deep outs. He hangs the ball up in the air way too long.
