GAME OF THE WEEK
at Northwestern 30 … Central Michigan 25
Northwestern appeared to be coasting in the fourth quarter up 30-13 after Jacob Schmidt ran for a 13-yard touchdown, his second score of the day, but Central Michigan fought back with Carl Volny’s second score of the game and a 25-yard touchdown grab from Kito Poblah. The Wildcats were able to hold on in the final minute. Dan Persa and Jeremy Ebert connected on touchdown passes from 24 and 25 yards out.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Penn State PK Collin Wagner hit 5-of-6 field goals connecting from 45, 32, 42, 32 and 21 yards out in the win over Temple.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Illinois … Didn’t Play This Week
Indiana … at Indiana 35 … Akron 20 … Indiana didn’t have any problems coming up with the win, but the defense, with Tyler Replogle out with a concussion, didn’t stuff the Akron offense cold. The Zips haven’t moved the ball on anyone all year long, but they were able to get the passing game going just enough to make the Hoosiers try in the second half. Now the fun begins with Michigan up next, and while the IU defense doesn’t have the talent to stop the Wolverine spread, the offense has the firepower to bomb away to keep up in any shootout. Ben Chappell was great against Akron and he’ll have to be brilliant against the beleaguered Wolverine secondary to pull off the upset.
Iowa … at Iowa 45 … Ball State 0 … There was no hangover after the loss to Arizona. The Hawkeyes took just a little bit before the floodgates opened up, and then it wasn’t a ball game. The defensive line obviously wanted to make amends after a rough game last week as it destroyed the Ball State offensive line and didn’t allow a thing. Considering the injuries and concerns at running back, Adam Robinson’s 22 carries were way too many in an easy win like this, but he showed he could carry the ground game. Things are back on track before the Penn State game next week, and if the defense can control the line like it did this week, there shouldn’t be any problems.
Michigan … at Michigan 65 … Bowling Green 21 … As long as Denard Robinson’s knee turns out to be fine, this was the perfect scenario for the Michigan offense. Bowling Green stayed close enough that Robinson would’ve stayed in the game if he was healthy, so the injury forced Devin Gardner and Tate Forcier to see live action. They were fantastic with Gardner completing 7-of-10 passes, with one deep ball dropped, and Forcier was perfect with the short passing attack completing all 12 of his throws. The defense is the defense; it’s going to be an issue all year long. The offense might not be as explosive without Robinson, but it still works.
Michigan State … at Michigan State 45 … Northern Colorado 7 … If you’re going to have a game without your head coach, this was the time for it. Michigan State got to work out the offense a little bit against Northern Colorado, and while it was an inspired effort with Mark Dantonio still recovering, it was also a sharp effort with everyone appearing to focus a bit more than usual. The pass rush still isn’t there, but the rest of the pieces are working well as the offense has achieved a near-perfect balance and everything appears set for the showdown against Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener. MSU might have one of the few running games that can match UW’s yard for yard.
Minnesota … Northern Illinois 34 … at Minnesota 23 … Hope begins anew with the start of Big Ten play against Northwestern, but the Gophers have been such a disaster over the last few weeks that they’re going to need a minor miracle to stay with either the Wildcats or Wisconsin, coming up two weeks later. Adam Weber bombed away on Northern Illinois, but once again, the running game failed to take control and the defense couldn’t come up with the key stops needed. Head coach Tim Brewster is done without a tremendous turnaround and big wins in conference play, but it’ll be asking a lot to take another step forward at this point with a defense that’s not getting the job done and an offense that’s not getting into the end zone.
Northwestern … at Northwestern 30 ... Central Michigan 25 … Dan Persa didn’t blink. Central Michigan made it interesting in the fourth quarter, but Persa was strong enough over the first 46 minutes to provide the padding needed to withstand a comeback. The 11 penalties were way too many and the Cats should’ve been able to coast late, but this was a more impressive win than the final score might indicate. The offense kept the chains moving and the defense kept the CMU running game under wraps. There’s no excuse to not be 6-0 with Minnesota and Purdue up next, but the secondary has to tighten up Michigan State and Indiana on the horizon.
Ohio State … at Ohio State 73 … Eastern Michigan 20 … Ohio State is trying to make a statement week after week. These aren’t the meek Buckeyes of past years; the coaching staff is trying to make sure this team dominates week in and week out, even if the opponent is Eastern Michigan. Terrelle Pryor and the passing game got rolling against the overmatched Eagles, and that’s vital with Big Ten play coming up and everyone loading up to stop the run. This isn’t a perfect team quite yet, the special teams could still use some work, but it’s playing extremely well. It had its tune ups, and while Illinois and shouldn’t be tests, they’ll provide an upgrade in competition to prepare for the Wisconsin showdown.
Penn State … at Penn State 22 … Temple 13 … The offense moved the ball, the defense forced mistakes and third down stops, and yet it still took way too much effort to get by a dominated Temple team. Collin Wagner saved the day with his field goals, but the game should’ve been a blowout and wasn’t. Robert Bolden did his part with an effective, efficient day, and Evan Royster was great early on, but the attack just isn’t clicking yet. Now it gets to go to Iowa, and it’s going to take the offense capitalizing on every opportunity, and the defense to keep coming up with big plays, to have a chance.
Purdue … Toledo 31 … at Purdue 20 … As if the season couldn’t have any more bad luck. First, RB Robert Bolden was lost for the year, then All-America WR Keith Smith, and now QB Robert Marve might be done after suffering a knee injury against Toledo. Rob Henry did what he could, and the running game worked well, but this was a disastrous loss with Big Ten play starting up. The pass rush continues to be solid, but the defense couldn’t come up with a stop. Three turnovers, two missed field goals, and seven penalties all added up to a tough upset, and now the team has to find a way to come together and be far tighter before dealing with Northwestern in two weeks.
Wisconsin … at Wisconsin 70 … Austin Peay 3 … This game was why you schedule an Austin Peay in late September. Wisconsin pitched a perfect game against Austin Peay with everything working and everything getting tuned up for the Big Ten opener at Michigan State. John Clay only had to carry the ball 15 times as James White and Montee Ball took on a brunt of the workload, while the passing game was almost perfect with Scott Tolzien and Jon Budmayr combining to complete 21-of-24 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns without a pick. With Nick Toon and David Gilreath still out, the passing game needed to get other receivers involved, but it was still TE Lance Kendricks who came up with the big plays.
