GAME OF THE WEEK
at LSU 16 … Tennessee 14
In a wild and controversial finish, LSU appeared to have botched a chance to go in for the win. On second down, and with no time outs left, Jordan Jefferson was tackled just short of the goal line. In an attempt to change personnel, the clock ran down, the snap flew past Jefferson, and Tennessee appeared to have escaped. But the Vols had 12 men on the field, LSU got another shot, and Stevan Ridley ran for a one-yard score for the stunning win. Jefferson started out the scoring with an 83-yard run on the first play of the game, but he was replaced by Jarrett Lee, who got the passing game going and led the way on most of the final drive. Helped by four LSU turnovers, Tennessee stayed alive with a one-yard scoring run from Tauren Poole in the first quarter and a Matt Simms three-yard run in the fourth, but the Vols only managed 217 yards of total offense.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ole Miss QB Jeremiah Masoli completed 9-of-17 passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran nine times for 42 yards and a score in the win over Kentucky.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Alabama … at Alabama 31 … Florida 6 … Alabama took its foot off the gas after getting up easily, and while Nick Saban and the coaching staff aren’t going to be pleased with a sluggish second half, it was a wipeout of Florida. There’s not too much to be that unhappy about. When the Tide tried early on, it wasn’t even close. There weren’t any chances taken down the field, and there wasn’t anything fancy. Bama came in, beat an inferior team, and coasted. Now comes the brutal stretch with the next five games against teams that’ll get two weeks off to rest up and prepare, starting at South Carolina next week.
Arkansas … Didn’t Play This Week
Auburn … at Auburn 52 … ULM 3 … Auburn did exactly what you’re supposed to do against a mediocre team like ULM, and while everyone got into the act in the blowout the best stat was 1 for -11. That was Cam Newton’s rushing line, and considering SEC play kicks in again next week with Kentucky followed up by Arkansas. This was a game when the team could’ve let down and taken it easy, and it didn’t with an almost perfectly balanced attack and a strong game from the defense that allowed just 33 rushing yards and forced three fumbles.
Florida … at Alabama 31 … Florida 6 … What’s Florida going to do about its offense? There are bumps and bruises in the backfield, but the bigger problem is figuring out an identity. The Gators are dabbling in the spread, but they’re not fully committed to it, and they’re not doing anything at a high enough level to scare a team as good as Alabama. The rest of the schedule looks like a piece of cake, with the only SEC road game the rest of the way at Vanderbilt, so there should be time to figure out what the attack wants to do before a possible rematch in the SEC Championship … if the Gators can beat South Carolina.
Georgia … at Colorado 29 … Georgia 27 … A.J. Green made his presence felt, Caleb King and the running game worked well (helped by a 40-yard run from Green), and Aaron Murray had a nice game, but the defense, outside of a great day from Akeem Dent, fell flat once again as the Dawgs have now lost four straight. To lose in heartbreaking fashion to Arkansas or South Carolina is one thing, but Colorado is Colorado; the season continues to go into the tank. With Tennessee and Vanderbilt coming up next at home, there’s plenty of time to turn things around, but there’s no margin for error the rest of the way with road games at Florida and Auburn to deal with. It’s going to take an inspired performance at this point to get to a bowl game.
Kentucky … at Ole Miss 42 … Kentucky 35 … Kentucky got the offense going against Ole Miss, and the defense wasn’t bad, but there were a few too many opportunities missed and it was too little too late with the passing game. Danny Travathan and the defense bottled up the Rebel ground game, for the most part, but the defense didn’t stiffen in the red zone allowing six touchdowns in six chances inside the 20. With Auburn up next, the Cats have to get even stronger against the run while the offense has to be prepared for a shootout.
…
LSU … at LSU 16 … Tennessee 14 … Obviously, all anyone will ever remember from this game was the botched ending that LSU got away with, but there were several other key aspects to this game. Jordan Jefferson simply can’t do anything with the passing game, and now there will have to be a rotation, at least, if Jarrett Lee isn’t the main man. The Tigers should’ve won this game in a walk, but four turnovers and so many problems with the passing game, at least when Jefferson was in, made it more of a battle than it needed to be. Obviously LSU can’t keep playing like this and hope to keep on winning, but this is LSU. It’s not always pretty, but the defense is playing extremely well, Stevan Ridley is running well, and 5-0 is 5-0. Good luck in Gainesville.
Ole Miss … at Ole Miss 42 … Kentucky 35 … Ole Miss is going to struggle all season long to hang on to leads, and the defense is going to give up yards in chunks. Against Kentucky, the running game needed to close things out and hold the lead late, and it wasn’t able to and the Cats made it way too close. It might not have been the pretty win the team was looking for, and the 301 yards of total offense isn’t always going to get it done in the SEC, but a win is a win with two weeks off to rest up and prepare for Alabama. To have any chance against the Tide, the Kentrell Lockett-less line has to generate more pressures. The Rebels didn’t generate a sack against UK.
Miss State … at Mississippi State 49 … Alcorn State 16 … The Bulldogs got to work out the passing game a little bit while getting Vick Ballard involved in the offense in the easy win over Alcorn State. Coming off the win over Georgia, and with a date with Houston up next, the offense is working as well as it has in a while and should be ready for a bit of a shootout it needed. The defensive front is doing a strong job of making things happen in the backfield, but the defense has to start taking the ball away. Turnover margin, a problem so far, is going to be a factor over the next month. The MSU offense might be working well, but it’s not dominant by any stretch and it can’t afford to make a slew of mistakes.
South Carolina … Didn’t Play This Week
Tennessee … at LSU 16 … Tennessee 14 … This was an all-timer of a gut-ripper, but Tennessee had its chance to come up with a stop after all the madness, but didn’t. The offense didn’t do anything outside of the running of Tauren Poole, and while the defense came up with a nice effort with four takeaways, it wasn’t the brick wall it had to be against the run. Now Derek Dooley has to do some coaching. He has to get his team over this heartbreak and focused and ready to play at Georgia next week, and the attention and focus should be there. At the very least, this rebuilding team knows it can go into a place like LSU and come within a 12th man of a win.
Vanderbilt … at Connecticut 40 … Vanderbilt 21 … Vandy has had problems scoring all year long and hasn’t done much against the run. Connecticut was a bad matchup for the Commodores, and it turned out to be a problem as the Jordan Todman and the Huskies controlled the game on the ground, while the offense struggled to do much after a second quarter flurry. Larry Smith can’t carry the entire offense by himself, and he can’t make a slew of big mistakes. Vandy can’t lose the turnover battle (it lost 3-2) and win on the road against a decent team. Fortunately, next week, Eastern Michigan isn’t a decent team.
