GAME OF THE WEEK

at Oklahoma State 38 … Texas A&M 35
Texas A&M gained 535 yards of total offense and dominated the fourth quarter and was driving for an apparent shot to break the 35-35 tie, but Oklahoma State came up with its fifth turnover of the night as Shaun Lewis picked off a Jerrod Johnson pass and took it to the Aggie 40. Two plays later, Dan Bailey nailed a 40-yard field goal for the win. Johnson threw five touchdown passes including two in the first half to Jeff Fuller and two in the fourth quarter, but he also threw four picks and dropped the ball leading to a James Thomas 63-yard fumble return for a score and a 14-point OSU lead in the fourth quarter. Down 21-7 after the first half, the Cowboys scored 28 straight points with Kendall Hunter scoring from two and seven yards out, and Justin Blackmon catching a 29-yard scoring pass before the A&M offense took over the game. The two teams combined for 886 yards, 16 penalties, and eight turnovers.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Baylor QB Robert Griffin completed 26-of-36 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran eight times for 64 yards and a score in the win over Kansas.

Baylor… at Baylor 55 … Kansas 7 … Steven Johnson made 11 tackles, all solo stops, but that was about the only bright spot on a miserable day for a defense that didn’t have any clue how to stop Robert Griffin. The offense is way too inconsistent, coming up with two awful performances on the road in blowout loses to Southern Miss and Baylor. It’s going to take a special effort to get back on track against Kansas State and Texas A&M over the next two games, but the season won’t go anywhere until the defensive front can generate some pressure and the offensive line can keep QB Jordan Webb from getting popped.

Colorado … at Colorado 29 … Georgia 27 … Is this the game that makes Baylor a possible bowl team? It was only a home game against Kansas, and there are plenty of big names left to play, but Robert Griffin is getting better by the week, coming up with the best game of his already great career, and the defense hasn’t allowed a think over the last two weeks giving up just 20 overall points to Rice and Kansas. The offense was explosive, Griffin was phenomenal, and the defense was a rock against the Jayhawk running game while coming up with four takeaways. There were ten penalties for 100 yards, but there weren’t any turnovers and a 678-270 margin in yards. It was the most dominant performance the team has come up with since joining the Big 12.

Iowa State … at Iowa State 52 … Texas Tech 38 … Austen Arnaud can throw a little bit. The running game worked extremely well against Texas Tech, but Arnaud did a fantastic job of making the Red Raiders pay for cheating up to take away Arnaud and Alexander Robinson from running. With Utah, at Oklahoma, and at Texas up next, this was a must win for the Cyclones, and they came up with, arguably, the best offensive game yet under head coach Paul Rhoads. The pass rush wasn’t there against Texas Tech, and there will have to be more pressure in the backfield against the good quarterbacks in the second half of the slate.

Kansas … at Baylor 55 … Kansas 7 … Steven Johnson made 11 tackles, all solo stops, but that was about the only bright spot on a miserable day for a defense that didn’t have any clue how to stop Robert Griffin.

Kansas State … Didn’t Play This Week

Missouri … Didn’t Play This Week

Nebraska … Didn’t Play This Week

Oklahoma … Oklahoma 28 … Texas 20 … Oklahoma has to figure out how to close. It has been able to get by so far by the skin of its teeth, but instead of being able to drop the hammer on a mediocre team like Texas (and Texas is mediocre right now), the game became close because the defense couldn’t come up with a big play and the offense couldn’t move the chains. In the end, though, 5-0 is 5-0 with DeMarco Murray running well, Landry Jones doing enough to get by, and the defense playing well in spurts. With time off before Iowa State, the Sooners have to come out even sharper and could use a Florida State-like performance going into Missouri.

Oklahoma State … at Oklahoma State 38 … Texas A&M 35 … Oklahoma State hasn’t exactly been perfect this year, and it hit a wall in the second half against Texas A&M, but one thing it has been able to do, besides put up gobs and gobs of yards, is win the turnover battle. Mistakes and flaws can be glossed over with takeaways, and the Cowboys proved that again. Despite getting bombed on, the defense ended up coming away with five key takeaways to pull off the win, and for a young team that’s still rebuilding, it really is about surviving and moving on. It’s too much to say that OSU can be the sleeper to pull off the Big 12 title with Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas still to deal with, but this was a terrific step forward in a year that was supposed to have a few hiccups.

Texas … Oklahoma 28 … Texas 20 … Texas did a great job of fighting back to make it a game, and Emmanuel Acho and Keenan Robinson were phenomenal for the defense, but the offense still didn’t show enough pop, especially with a middling passing game, and there wasn’t enough done early to avoid being put in a big hole. For a team that needs breaks, though, it couldn’t come up with them in the final moments with the Acho forced fumble just barely going OU’s way, and the Aaron Williams fumble ending the fun. Now there are two weeks off before facing Nebraska in Lincoln, and the Horns need it.

Texas A&M … at Oklahoma State 38 … Texas A&M 35 … All the focus around the Oklahoma State loss will be on Jerrod Johnson and his five turnovers, and rightly so. Yes, it’s a raw deal that all the blame, or at least 90% of it, falls on one player, but Johnson, for all the good he did, made too many poor reads and took way too many chances. Not only did he throw four picks, and lose a fumble, but he had several other throws that could’ve easily have been picked off. A&M outplayed the Cowboys, for the most part, and now it’s about having a short memory with two more shootouts ahead against Arkansas and Missouri. While Johnson has to tighten up, getting more pressure on the quarterback, something the Aggies didn’t do enough of in Stillwater, is also a must.

Texas Tech… at Iowa State 52 … Texas Tech 38 … The offense worked. There were three turnovers and some big mistakes, but the Red Raider attack moved the ball well on the Iowa State defense with Taylor Potts hanging up five touchdown passes while working the running game into the mix, too. The defense was another story as it couldn’t come up with a stop against a normally anemic Cyclone offense. Coming off a two week break after the Texas loss, this was inexcusable, and now the Baylor game becomes a must with shootouts against Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Missouri, along with a road date at Colorado, on the horizon.
