GAME OF THE WEEK

Michigan 42 … at Indiana 35
Denard Robinson ran for his second score of the day with a four-yard touchdown with 17 seconds to play to finally put the Hoosiers away. Robinson tore off a 72-yard scoring dash in the first and connected with Roy Roundtree from 32 yards out, Kevin Koger from three yards away, and found Junior Hemingway for a 70-yard score, but Indiana wouldn’t go away. Ben Chappell threw for 480 yards, Tandon Doss caught 15 passes for 221 yards, and Darius Willis gashed the Wolverines with scoring runs from 22 and four yards away, and he took a pass 19 yards for a touchdown to tie it with 1:15 to play. Robinson ran three times for 27 yards and connected with Hemingway for a 42-yard play to get down to the four before closing out the drive with the game-winner.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michigan QB Denard Robinson completed 10-of-16 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran 19 times for 217 yards and two scores in the win over Indiana.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Illinois … Ohio State 24 … at Illinois 13 … Illinois, what are you doing going for a field goal down seven less than five minutes to play?! Your offense isn’t doing much of anything against the Ohio State defense, the Illini hit the field goal, and the Buckeyes ended it. Illinois is better than originally expected, even with the mere 251 yards of total offense, but it has to go all out against the league’s better teams. Nine penalties and 119 rushing yards aren’t going to help the cause.

Indiana … Michigan 42 … at Indiana 35 … Michigan’s offense is going to do that to just about everyone, but it’s good to know that Ben Chappell and the passing game can bomb away when needed. He and Tandon Doss were phenomenal with big pass after big pass to keep up the pace, while Darius Willis did a good job when he got his chances on the ground. It was a case of Michigan getting the ball last (with a reasonable amount of time on the clock), but showed that it’s going to be dangerous in Big Ten action with Ohio State up next in what should be a very, very interesting test for the Buckeyes.

Iowa … at Iowa 24 … Penn State 3 … It wasn’t a perfect performance by the Iowa offense, Penn State’s defense is good, but it got the job done early and let the defense take care of the rest against a struggling Nittany Lion attack. Adrian Clayborn and the defensive line dominated the PSU front five and never let the game get close. Ricky Stanzi threw well, but he had a pick and the Hawkeyes only converted 2-of-10 third down chances and came up with 17 first downs. With the Arizona loss well in the past, now the team can take the next two weeks to focus on stopping Michigan as the start of a rough stretch.

Michigan … Michigan 42 … at Indiana 35 … Michael Shaw might have been out, but Michigan really needs to come up with a few more options for the running game to keep Denard Robinson alive. Robinson was phenomenal once again, but Vincent Smith’s nine carries for 80 yards was the only help on the ground. Everything worked for the offense, but once again, the defense was a complete and utter disaster as Ben Chappell and the IU passing game went ballistic to keep up the pace. Cameron Gordon had a nice statistical game, making 15 tackles with an interception, but the Wolverines had better keep scoring in big games against Michigan State and Iowa up next, and Robinson has to keep being Robinson.

Michigan State … at Michigan State 34 … Wisconsin 24 … Michigan State was supposed to be miserable on third downs. It converted 9-of-18 chances. It was supposed to have a penalty problem. It committed just four. It was supposed to buckle against the Wisconsin power game. MSU outgained the Badgers 175 yards to 165. There were three first half turnovers, but the Spartans were still up by ten going into the locker room. This was one of the team’s best performances of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time with Michigan up next. If the O can control the ball like it did this week, it should be able to control Denard Robinson.

Minnesota … Northwestern 29 … at Minnesota … Minnesota’s defense looked like the one from the first half of 2008 when it was forcing mistakes all over the place, and the offense had a spark with decent balance, and then the production stopped. The defense couldn’t get the Wildcat offense off the field and couldn’t come up with a third down stop, and the offense couldn’t put the game away when it had its chances. On a four-game losing streak, with all losses at home, now it’s off to Wisconsin to try to right the ship. Uh oh. On the plus side, Michael Carter had a whale of a game with 11 tackles with an interception and a forced fumble.

Northwestern … Northwestern 29 … at Minnesota … While it was way too much of a struggle to get past a bad Minnesota team, Northwestern found a way to overcome some bad early mistakes with a great second half and a good all-around game from Dan Persa. The Cats aren’t getting enough on the ground from Jacob Schmidt and Mike Trumpy, and Persa had to carry the attack. That’s fine against the Gophers, and it won’t be a problem against Purdue, but to make any real noise in conference play, more help is a must, and the bad errors have to stop. Ten penalties and three turnovers will be talked about this week.

Ohio State … Ohio State 24 … at Illinois 13 … Terrelle Pryor has to prove he can hit a 3rd-and-long pass. There were two key times against Illinois, once late in the third and once in the fourth, when the offense went ultra-conservative and failed to throw to the marker. It was a struggle as the offense came up with a mere 290 yards, with 66 coming on one Pryor run, and while the defense held the Illini to 251 yards, it wasn’t a good performance. If the Buckeyes play like this in Madison or Iowa City, they’ll lose. Pryor appeared to be fine after leaving for a bit with a calf strain.

Penn State … at Iowa 24 … Penn State 3 … The defense is doing a decent job. It didn’t come up with the stops it needed to early against Iowa, but it kept the team in the game. Robert Bolden did a decent job of not bucking under the pressure, but he wasn’t able to keep the chains moving and he didn’t get any help from the offensive line or the running game. After struggling way too much against Kent State and Temple before this loss, it’s going to take a better offensive performance to get by Illinois in what should be a tougher than expected game. Finishing off drives is a must. It was a problem against Temple and it was a problem the one time the Nittany Lions had a chance to make it a game against Iowa. Points are too hard to come by for this team to ever blow any opportunities.

Purdue … Didn’t Play This Week

Wisconsin … at Michigan State 34 … Wisconsin 24 … The Badgers didn’t play well. J.J. Watt had a phenomenal game on the defensive line, but the D couldn’t come up with a key stop outside of a fourth and goal from the one, was fooled time and again, and it got picked apart too easily. The offense was handed three turnovers and UW was still down by ten at halftime. There were key dropped passes, Scott Tolzien was off, and John Clay couldn’t get going. Even so, there were still plenty of chances to take control of the game and it was still a battle. With a free space against Minnesota up next before Ohio State, it’ll be important to finally come up with a full sixty minutes against an FBS team.
