Collegefootballnews’ Matthew Smith Reviews all the Pac-10 Games, Week Nine

Rising:
Stanford: Just an incredibly dominating win in Seattle for the Cardinal.
Oregon: Another big step forward for the Ducks.
Oregon St: The Beavers are starting to play at a really high level.
Arizona St: They really needed to win… and they completely dominated.

Hovering:
Arizona: They didn’t play fantastic, but they did win.
UCLA: Losing wasn’t good, but there were things to build on in the game.

Falling:

USC: They were competitive for a while, but eventually they got exposed as just not being as good as the Ducks.
Washington St: This was supposed to be one of a couple games they had a shot at… and they weren’t even close to competitive.
Cal: Just an awful performance in pretty much every way.
Washington: Just an awful performance in pretty much every way.

Oregon (-7) 53, USC 32
my pick: Oregon 34, @ USC 31

What to take from this:
If you’re Oregon:

Another great win for the Ducks. It was a game for a bit too long, but eventually they pulled away like they’ve done against so many other teams.

If you’re USC:
For most of the game, this was a quality effort by the Trojans. Unfortunately, in the end the game got away from them, but this was still a well-played game by USC. They just weren’t good enough to win it, and weren’t deep enough to avoid Oregon’s late run.

@ Oregon St (-2.5) 35, Cal 7
my pick: @ Oregon St 24, Cal 21

What to take from this:
If you’re Cal:

They got their asses kicked, plain and simple. Offense, defense, nothing worked. Kevin Riley clearly wasn’t a great quarterback, but he was still better than their other options. At 4-4, they need to beat both the Washington schools, because it’s going to be really hard to take either of the other two games, even if they are both at home.

If you’re Oregon St:
This was just a fantastic effort by the Beavers. At 3-3, they really needed to get this win done… and they did in spades. Once again, Oregon St is really taking off as the year goes along.

Arizona (-9) 29, @ UCLA 21
my pick: Arizona 28, @ UCLA 24

What to take from this:
If you’re Arizona:

Statistically, they dominated this game. But UCLA was in it throughout, partially because of a few big plays, partially because the Wildcats just couldn’t put them away until the end. Things are going to get tougher for them next week; they need to play better to pull that one out.

If you’re UCLA:
They really could have used an upset here… but they were competitive at least. They gave up yards in spades, but made the plays they needed to give themselves a chance at the end. If they can play a bit better, there’s the potential to go on a run and find a way to make a bowl game.

Stanford (-7) 41 , @ Washington 0
my pick: Stanford 31, @ Washington 17

What to take from this:
If you’re Stanford:

Just a fantastic effort by the Cardinal. For the second time this year, they won by a huge margin and pitched a shutout at the same time, and on the road no less. When this team is on, they’re almost unstoppable.

If you’re Washington:
They just got their asses kicked, plain and simple. Even worse, Jake Locker is hurt and will be out for at least the game at Oregon. The last three games (UCLA, Cal, Wazzu) are individually winnable, but not the way they played here… and if Locker is out for a while, they can pretty much forget about it. Losing here wasn’t the issue, but the way they lost, and the way Locker got hurt were both very bad signs going forward.

@ Arizona St (-21) 42, Washington St 0
my pick: @ Arizona St 31, Washington St 17

What to take from this:
If you’re Washington St:

I’m not sure how much to read into this one. It may be just an outlier bad effort, or it may be the sign of another collapse, and I think we need to wait and see another game or to before we can figure it out. I’m inclined to think it was more of an outlier than anything else, but it was such a bad effort that I’m not sure.

If you’re Arizona St:
This may just be Washington St… but ASU still kicked serious ass in this game. Especially on the heels of their awful effort at Cal, this was a huge bounceback effort for the Sun Devils. It’s still going to be a difficult road ahead to reach six or seven wins, but if they can play like they did in this game, maybe they can make it happen.
