SEC Bloggers Championship Game Review
Championship Week under the gun
Championship Week under the gun
Posted Dec 6, 2010

Each Monday, CFN's SEC Bloggers put the previous weekend under the microscope, looking for the Lucky 7 (6 this week, given there was just the one game)

BG is Billy Gomila, BH is Brian Harbach, GH is Gabe Harris , RM is Russ Mitchell, and BS is Barrett Sallee.

1. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE SECCG: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn
BG: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – Do we even have to discuss this?
BH: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – Six total touchdowns, but the way he threw the ball down the field was something for which Carolina was not prepared.
GH: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – Take away his running and he's still the best QB in the SEC.
RM: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – Take away his running and his passing and his leadership, and he's just average.
BS: Cameron Newton; QB, Auburn – In one of Auburn's biggest games on its history, Newton couldn't be stopped.

BG: Nick Fairley; DT, Auburn – A one sack and two hurry stat line does not truly capture how disruptive he was.
BH: Nick Fairley; DT, Auburn – Once again, Fairley shows up big and disrupts an offense before it gets a chance to get going.
GH: Nick Fairley; DL, Auburn – Has been Newton's equivalent on the defensive side of the ball. Helped make Stephen Garcia's night a living hell.
RM: Nick Fairley; DL, Auburn – The most dominant defensive lineman to grace the SEC since LSU's Glenn Dorsey.
BS: Nick Fairley; DL, Auburn – Provided pressure on Darren Bates' INT, and generally made Stephen Garcia's life miserable for four hours.

BG: Spencer Lanning; P, South Carolina – The pickings are slim, but he did his part to keep Auburn in bad field position. Not that it mattered.
BH: Spencer Lanning; P, South Carolina – Special teams wasn't big in this one, but Lanning did an excellent job punting the ball, giving Auburn little to no chance for a return.
GH: Darvin Adams; PR, Auburn – Took over the punt returning duties from the struggling Quindarius Carr and made it look easy. Adams is as sure-handed as they come..
RM: Darvin Adams; PR, Auburn – Looked very comfortable/able returning punts Saturday for the Tigers.
BS: Darvin Adams; PR, Auburn – Saw his first significant time of the season at punt returner in Auburn's biggest game, and played fine.

BG: Gene Chizik – Coffee is for closers, and the Chiz-man earned his Starbucks today.
BH: Gus Malzahn – In 60 minutes, Malzahn took the Evil Genius nickname away from Steve Spurrier; maybe Spurrier just passed it on.
GH: Gene Chizik/Gus Malzahn/Ted Roof – Absolutely obliterated South Carolina in all phases of the game.
RM: Gus Malzahn – Don't be surprised if he's a head coach 48 hours after winning the BCS Championship.
BS: Gus Malzahn – Ole Gus made himself some money at the Georgia Dome. If this guy is not a head coach next season, I'd be more shocked than Jason Bateman was in Dodgeball.

BG: The pre-halftime Hail Mary – Seriously Devonte Holloman? You batted a Hail-Mary pass UP? Seriously?
BH: Carolina's Offensive Gameplan – Sure Marcus Lattimore had 16 carries, but he was not featured early or often enough in this game. Not sure what Carolina was trying to do against the Auburn defense.
GH: Auburn keeping Alshon Jeffery in check – It was considered a given that Jeffery would have his way with the AU secondary but it didn't happen with only 4 catches for 36 yards and 1 TD. He and Garcia were out of sync all game long.
RM: Final Score – We expected double digits, but not that.
BS: Auburn's defense -– Played as close to a complete game as it has all season long in the SEC.

BG: South Carolina in the Second Half – That final first-half play stole the Gamecocks' spirit and will to win.
BH: Alshon Jeffrey – Four catches, 36 yards and a touchdown… that's it. As little as we saw of Lattimore in the first half, Jeffrey was even less of a factor Saturday.
GH: USC's second half – The Hail Mary was a backbreaker and no one thought AU was going to lose after that, but it seemed the Gamecocks lost their will to fight too.
RM: SC's second half – We expect and deserve more fight out of a division champion.
BS: SC's pass defense – Quoting Gutter from PCU. "I knew it was going to be bad. I did not know it would be this bad."
