50. North Carolina at Georgia Tech, Sept. 24

The Yellow Jackets have won five of the last six in the series, and if they want to get into the Coastal race, they need to win the ACC opener. UNC plays Virginia the week before, but it still has road trips to Virginia Tech, NC State, and Clemson to deal with and could use a victory to show that the defense is back to normal.

49. Wisconsin at Michigan State, Oct. 22

If was Wisconsin’s lone regular season gaffe last year as Michigan State chose the right time to finally start connecting on third downs and stopped committing penalties. Now it’s an interdivisional game, and the Badgers can’t be looking ahead to the showdown at Ohio State while the Spartans have to deal with the sandwich factor with Michigan the week before and a trip to Nebraska to follow.

48. Texas Tech at Texas, Nov. 5

It was a bit of a disappointment last year, and no one could’ve known that it’d be one of two Texas conference wins. This year, the Longhorns should be on a bit of a roll with at Baylor and Kansas in the two weeks before. Texas Tech also has a relative breather the week before hosting Iowa State, and it needs the win with Oklahoma State and at Missouri to follow.

47. Nebraska at Penn State, Nov. 12

In 1982, these two played one of the greatest games in college football history with Penn State coming up with a thrilling and controversial win on the way to the national title. They’ve played a few times since, but none with the pomp and circumstance that this one will have. The Nittany Lions get a week off before hosting the Huskers, while Nebraska will have to avoid looking ahead to a more important Legends game against Michigan the week after.

46. West Virginia at Syracuse, Oct. 22

WVU should have the best team in the Big East, but it has a few key road trips to deal with before going off to the BCS. While getting a week off will be nice, it’ll take a big-time effort to get past a Syracuse team that also gets a week off to prepare. If everything goes according to plan, the winner should take hold of the Big East race.

45. UCF at Southern Miss, Nov. 12

With all due respect to Houston and Tulsa, this might be the game of the Conference USA season. UCF should be in a firefight with Tulsa the week before, and will be in a shootout at East Carolina in a big East showdown the week after, but winning at Southern Miss could mean everything to the title chase. For the Golden Eagles, this could end the discussion with layups against UAB and Memphis to close. If USM is in the division lead before the Knights come to town, it’ll play for it all if it comes away with the win.

44. Penn State at Wisconsin, Nov. 26

It’s the end of the Big Ten season for both teams, and if Ohio State implodes under the weight of its scandals, this could be for the Leaders title. The Nittany Lions have won three of the last four in the series including back-to-back wins in 2007 and 2008 by a combined score of 86-14. Coming off a trip to Ohio State and with a battle with Nebraska the week before, good luck finding a tougher three game stretch than Penn State has to deal with. On the flip side, the Badgers face Purdue, at Minnesota, and at Illinois in the previous three weeks.

43. Oklahoma State at Texas Tech, Nov. 12

OSU has won three of the last four in the series, and while the 34-17 victory last year wasn’t all that tough, it was the third-lowest scoring output of the season. It’s no longer a Big 12 South game, but after going to Texas the week before and with a date at Missouri to follow – and with a trip to Oklahoma a few weeks earlier – the Red Raiders have GOT to win its home finale. The Cowboys get two relative weeks off at home against Iowa State and Kansas State before going to Lubbock.

42. UCLA at USC, Nov. 26

Ten of the last 11. Is this still a rivalry? USC has owned the series, and this year it should be a vital game for both coaching staffs. Rick Neuheisel really, REALLY needs a win over the Trojans in the regular season finale, and with a tough slate, he might need it to get his team to a bowl game. Lane Kiffin isn’t on the hot seat that Neuheisel is, but he might be if he can’t beat Oregon in Eugene the week before and loses at home to the Bruins.

41. Alabama at Mississippi State. Nov. 12

Lost in the greatness of Mississippi State’s 2010 was that the team didn’t really beat anyone nasty. Of course, beating Florida in Gainesville is always a plus, but that wasn’t the same Gator team of past years. The Bulldogs didn’t beat anyone else who finished the season with fewer than six losses. The 30-10 loss to Bama showed that there’s still work to be done, and this year the Tide has to gear it up the week after after dealing with LSU. MSU doesn’t exactly have to go to Death Valley the week before hosting UT Martin.
