Really, is Matt McGloin a better option for Penn State at quarterback than Rob Bolden? Is there going to be a pass rush this year? From the Scout publishers, here's the inside info on the key questions this spring including the quarterback battle that'll be one of the biggest keys to the Big Ten race. Mark Brennan of FightOnState.com gives his take.

Q: Really, is Matt McGloin a better option for Penn State at quarterback than Rob Bolden? Is there going to be a pass rush this year?

From Mark Brennan, FightOnState.com … Bolden is the long-term answer at QB … if he decides to stay. He asked for his release following the bowl and Joe Paterno refused to grant it, making him stay through the spring. Bolden has said he will re-evaluate things after the spring semester.

The primary difference between Bolden and McGloin is that we pretty much saw the best we're going to see out of McGloin last season. He looked amazing at times (see the first half at Ohio State) and downright terrible (see the second half at Ohio State and the bowl). His greatest strength -- his fearlessness -- is also his greatest weakness in that he forces way too many throws and doesn't have the arm strength to get away with it, especially against teams with great speed (like Ohio State and Florida).

Bolden has a much better arm. Considering he arrived on campus last July, he clearly has a greater upside. I think he has the ability to be more mobile than McGloin in terms of pure speed, though McGloin showed last year he can be a pretty clever runner.

The pass rush should be better. Their two best DEs, Jack Crawford and Eric Latimore, were both limited by injuries last season. Crawford had a nagging foot problem that required surgery after the season. He was never full go. Lattimore had a wrist issue that caused him to miss the second half of the season. The third-best DE, Sean Stanley, spent much of last season in Paterno's doghouse due to a dreaded off-field incident.

I'm guessing DT Devon Still is really going to step up, too. He has the size and athletic ability to be outstanding. He just has never put it all together. He is a senior now, and I think he realizes if he doesn't come through with a big season his odds of making it at the next level will be greatly reduced.

The one big thing I'm looking for is the same thing everyone else is looking for -- what happens at QB. Beyond Bolden and McGloin, redshirt freshman P.J. Jones (the star of the 2010 Blue-White Game after enrolling early) and junior Kevin Newsome (the projected starter last year) are in the mix, too.

It should be fun to see how the coaching staff juggles everything and how -- if at all -- the Bolden soap opera impacts everything.
