Boston College ... at Boston College 45 … Massachusetts 17 … At least for this week, the Eagle found a running game – at least a little bit. The 193 yards were solid, but the ground attack only averaged 3.9 yards per carry. UMass isn’t a bad FCS team and it moved the ball a little bit after getting down early, but BC never let it get interesting with four takeaways and great ball control. The defense didn’t give up a touchdown until the fourth quarter when the game was well out of reach, and the offense looked like it needed this easy tune-up. After losing to Duke, this should help before getting a hot Wake Forest.

Clemson ... at Clemson 35 … Florida State 30 … Blowing up against Auburn is one thing, but Florida State’s defense it truly something special and Clemson was able to roll. Tajh Boyd was beaten up and a bit battered, but he threw for 344 yards and three touchdowns helped by Sammy Watkins, the new star who come up with another huge performance catching eight passes for 141 yards and two scores. But there are holes. The Tigers had way too many problems putting the game away, hurt by a poor call on a late fourth down attempt and a secondary that had problems against the Seminole receivers, but no matter how it happened, beating Auburn and Florida State in back to back weeks is fantastic. What’s better? Beating Virginia Tech in Blacksburg next week.

Duke ... at Duke 48 … Tulane 27 … All of a sudden, Duke is on a roll. It probably shouldn’t have beaten Boston College, and it probably shouldn’t have lost to Richmond, but now at 2-2 with a road trip to Miami to face FIU, the offense is starting to work at just the right time. Sean Renfree was good, but the production came from several different spots with the blowout starting early and not letting up until the fourth quarter. Charlie Hatcher came up with five tackles and two sacks, the backups got in some meaningful work, and for once, but Blue Devils got a rare breather.

Florida State ... at Clemson 35 … Florida State 30 … Florida State had to be perfect to make up for the bumps and bruises on offense and without quarterback E.J. Manuel, and it wasn’t. Even so, the Noles almost pulled it off. The 11 penalties were disastrous and the lack of any running game – coming up with just 29 yards – hurt, but Clint Trickett proved he could play throwing for 336 yards and three scores. There can’t be a letdown next week against a rested Wake Forest, but this is it for the tough ACC games considering Miami is mediocre and there’s no Virginia Tech to deal with.

Georgia Tech... at Georgia Tech 35 ... North Carolina 28 ... The Georgia Tech defense gave up a big home run and struggled in the fourth quarter, but when it had to put the clamps down to close things out, he did. The offense continues to be tremendous, and now it’s cranking out yards in chunks against teams with top-shelf defensive talent. To be able to run for 312 yards against a front seven as good as North Carolina’s, and to do the little things needed on the short yardage plays, showed that everything is working in tune. Tevin Washington is razor sharp and is making all the right decisions. The O should blow up over the next several weeks, and right now, nothing is going to slow it down but mistakes.

Maryland ... Temple 38 ... at Maryland 7 … It’s like the Terps didn’t take this game seriously in any way after the loss to West Virginia. This was a total team meltdown with the special teams screwing up, the run defense getting gashes, and the offense way too sleepy and ineffective. Temple might be decent, but this has to be seen as a wake-up call. There won’t be any problems against Towson next week, but the defensive front has to be much tougher in the middle, and the linebackers have to be much stronger tackling – missing stops time and again – before dealing with the road game at Georgia Tech.

Miami ... Kansas State 28 … at Miami 24 … Oh come on, Miami. The win over Ohio State should’ve been a difference maker and should’ve been the trigger for a huge run, but instead the team came out flat, the defense got shoved around, and the offense had to scramble and rally. It shouldn’t have come down to a last second rushing attempt into the end zone. Sean Spence was terrific, making 15 tackles with a sack and a forced fumble, but the rest of the D fell flat. Beating up Bethune-Cookman next week will help ease the pain, and then its showtime going to Virginia Tech and North Carolina in back-to-back weeks. Miami has to be a whole bunch better, and a whole lot more consistent, to have a shot in either game.

North Carolina ... at Cincinnati 44 … NC State 14 … NC State is a disaster. Injuries on defense don’t excuse the miserable play from the offense, who’s biggest problem is a line that can’t do anything for the ground game and isn’t giving Mike Glennon any time. The Cincinnati defense is good, but it’s not so good that State should be held to -26 rushing yards. While Glennon did connect on a few big plays, and T.J. Graham was a weapon with his touchdown grabs from 87 and 49 yards away, this was an embarrassment. With Georgia Tech’s running game up next, the depleted defense has to figure out something in a big hurry – like how to take proper angles – or it’ll be another ugly blowout.

NC State ...Didn’t Play This Week

Virginia ... Southern Miss 30 … at Virginia 24 … Virginia couldn’t seem to come up with the key play at the right time to turn the game around. The Cavaliers have been playing up or down to their competition, and while they converted on three fourth down tries, Michael Rocco’s three interceptions were a killer and the lack of a late defensive stop gave away the win. This was there for the taking, and Virginia didn’t get it done. With Idaho up next, it’s time to settle on the right quarterback to stick with the rest of the way, and it’s time to get an easy win before dealing with Georgia Tech. The run defense has been just good enough to give the Yellow Jackets a hard time, and with a week off after playing the Vandals, the coaches basically have three weeks to prepare.

Virginia Tech ... Virginia Tech 30 … at Marshall 10 … Is Virginia Tech actually any good? The defense has been its usual great self, and the running game is fine, but the passing attack has been hit-or-miss and hasn’t been tested yet. Against Clemson, the Hokies have to be ready for a shootout, and that means Logan Thomas has to be fantastic. He was good against the Herd, completing 22-of-33 passes for 229 yards and a pick, but can he keep up the pace with the Tigers? David Wilson hasn’t gotten enough pub yet, but that’ll change with at least 100 rushing yards a given. This was a good, tight win over Marshall with few mistakes. Tech is ready to go big game hunting.
