Three Best Games of the Week
1. at Rutgers 21 … Navy 20
2. at Cincinnati 25 … Louisville 16
3. at Connecticut 16 … South Florida 10
Cincinnati ... at Cincinnati 25 … Louisville 16 … It might have taken a little while to get the offense moving, but Louisville’s attack couldn’t stick it in the end zone and the Bearcat D tightened up in the second half. Zach Collaros was accurate, but he couldn’t come up with any deep plays and only managed 152 yards and a 26-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Woods. Isaiah Pead took control of the attack with 151 yards and a brilliant 50-yard run to all but put the game away. The punting game continues to be a major strength with Pat O’Donnell averaging close to 41 yards per kick and keeping the struggling Louisville offense pinned deep. With four of the next five games on the road, UC couldn’t blow the Big East opener.
Connecticut ... at Connecticut 16 … South Florida 10 … The UConn defense saved the offense as Twyon Martin’s big strip and Byron Jones’ fumble recovery for a score made all the difference. Johnny McEntee only threw for 103 yards and, and while Lyle McCombs ran for 130 yards on 32 carries, the ground game didn’t really work. The difference was that USF made the mistakes UConn didn’t. The Huskies turned it over twice, but they still won the turnover battle and only committed three penalties. No, the offense wasn’t great, but it did enough to milk the clock to get just enough third down conversions to control the game. It might not have been pretty, but it was a nice bounceback win after the West Virginia debacle and with a trip to Pitt up next.
Louisville ... at Cincinnati 25 … Louisville 16 … The Cardinals had to convert drives into touchdowns instead of field goals when they had the chance. The attack is averaging just 16.4 points per game going into this weekend, and while Chris Philpott came up with a great game in the breezy conditions, hitting three field goals, the only touchdown came on a pick-six from Mike Evans. Teddy Bridgewater was solid, throwing for 195 yards with a pick, but the offense was stagnant in the second half and the defense hit a wall. There were chances to take control of the game, but Bridgewater couldn’t move the chains. With three of the next four games at home, starting with Rutgers, the season might hinge on a win next week.
Pitt ... Utah 26 … at Pitt 14 … Pitt’s offensive line continues to be a nightmare. Utah doesn’t have much of a pass rush but it was still able to get into the backfield on a regular basis and screw up the Panther passing game. Tino Sunseri and
Trey Anderson combined to complete 5-of-19 passes for 12 yards, with Anderson throwing two picks. Utah quickly figured out that the Pitt passing game wasn’t working, and everyone loaded up on Ray Graham. The eight penalties were bad, the three turnovers were worse, and the 120 yards of total offense was embarrassing. Now losing four of the last five games, the South Florida win is looking more and more like a fluke.
Rutgers ... at Rutgers 21 … Navy 20 … The Scarlet Knights did a brilliant job to slow down the Navy running game, but it still took a blocked field goal and a big day from Mohamed Sanu and Jawan Jamison to escape with the tough win. Gary Nova threw two picks and the offense wasn’t consistent enough, but Sanu did his part with ten catches for 100 yards while Jamison was a steadying factor with 101 yards on a workmanlike 22 carries. The Knights struggled a bit too much offensively against a mediocre defense, but all was saved by holding Navy to just 162 rushing yards with the defensive line dominating yet another big game. On a four game winning streak, this has been a sneaky-good start to the season going into the road game at Louisville. Win that, and it’s a 3-0 Big East start going into the home showdown against West Virginia.
South Florida ... at Connecticut 16 … South Florida 10 … South Florida destroyed the UConn offense at times with the great pass rush, and the Bull ground game worked well with B.J. Daniels, Darrell Scott, and Demetris Murray forming a three-headed monster on the ground, but three Daniels turnovers four turnovers as a team, along with nine penalties, were just enough to equal a tough loss in a winnable game. After sitting around for two weeks after the loss at Pitt, this was not the performance Skip Holtz wanted. The home game against Cincinnati is a must win with the way the Bulls are playing on the road and with Rutgers and Syracuse up next on the road. To win, the Bulls have to start winning the turnover margin again and the Daniels has to stop screwing up.
