Alabama State (1-0) at Eastern Michigan (1-0) Sep. 10,
Here's he Deal … It’s been 22 years since Eastern Michigan started out a football season 2-0. That’s staggering. There’s a joke here somewhere about stopping the Eagles being so easy, even the weather did it for an entire day, but the truth is that after a shoddy start and a 9-3 deficit, they looked like they could do whatever they wanted. They rolled up 326 yards on the ground and looked the part of a future contender in the MAC for the final three quarters. Though only one of their wins over FCS schools would count towards being bowl eligible, EMU needs a win over Alabama State to simply keep confidence high.
2-0 would be nice for Alabama State, too, who railroaded Mississippi Valley State in their opener. This is its first game ever against an FBS opponent, and this is a showcase feature a genuine talent in WR Nick Andrews and a D coming off of a game where it forced seven turnovers in its easy 32 point win. The program is fired as a team can be for Eastern Michigan in the first FBS opportunity in school history.
Why Eastern Michigan Might Win: EMU ran over, around, and through Howard, with both Dominique Sherrer and Javonti Greene picking up identical 120 rushing games. QB Alex Gillett was pretty pedestrian, but he didn’t need to be amazing. He did toss a pick six though, and that provided Howard’s only foray into the end zone. Bama State’s a little better than Howard, and probably a little more adept at causing turnovers. That being said, EMU will need to work pretty hard to come up short in this game. Ron English is from the Lloyd Carr school of winning football games…using size to strangle the opposition on the ground offensively, and that’s precisely where EMU has such an advantage.
Why Alabama State Might Win: None of these players have any predetermined biases on how difficult it is to play an FBS school, and that is probably an advantage over most other FCS squads. Also, they very well might have the best player on the field in Andrews, who is assaulting the ASU receiver record books. As evidenced by belting around the Delta Devils, they predicate themselves on causing turnovers. All that being said, MVSU isn’t anything near an FBS level team, or even a good FCS level team. QB Greg Jenkins accounted for 4 total touchdowns last week, including one on the ground, so there is versatility here. ASU probably will need the Eagles to give away free possessions as they did early against Howard, but if Coach Ron’s squad gets sloppy, ASU will take advantage of it.
What To Watch Out For: EMU's running back situation was a question with no answers until this past weekend, when it seemed like anyone who could be handed a football could produce for EMU. Both Dominique Sherrer and Javonti Greene put up identical 120-yard days, but nearly 60% of Sherrer’s were on one 77 yard jaunt. Greene is the present, but also the future for the Eagles, and English loves to feature the run. The sophomore appears to be a guy MAC fans will get to know on a regular basis. He will share carries, but he will do his job well.
What Will Happen: It's not going to be the
layup it was aginst Howard, but the Eagles should be
able to control the game throughout with a balanced
attack. EMU is too big, too strong, and too much improved to let ASU clip their first FBS competition. English and staff likely will harp on a slow start from last week as motivation, and it will be over sooner, rather than later.
