Oct. 8 FIU 27 … at Akron 17
CFN Analysis: It should’ve been an easier win. Wesley Carroll had a great day throwing the ball, with 308 yards and connecting with T.Y. Hilton 12 times for 144 yards, but it was still too much of a fight to put the game away. The offense cranked out 524 yards, Kedric Rhodes ran wild, and the team controlled the ball and the clock. The ten penalties were bad, but they weren’t that big a deal. When the offense puts up yards like this, the points need to flow. Instead, it took a full four quarters to put away a miserable Akron team with only a three point lead late in the third. With Arkansas State up next, the defense has to find its nastiness again in the red zone, and the offense has to turn yards into points.

Brian Wagner is phenomenal. The veteran linebacker did what he could against FIU, making 21 tackles with a tackle for loss, but the rest of the defense has been awful. There’s no run defense, no pass rush, and little overall production, and yet the game was still there for the taking. It was a three point game in the fourth quarter, but the Zips couldn’t mount any sort of a drive to get over the hump, with Clayton Moore finishing with just 153 yards on 11-of-23 passes. He ran for 51 yards and a score as the team’s lone offensive playmaker, and he needs more help. Until the lines start to improve, if they can improve, the season isn’t going anywhere.

(AP) AKRON, Ohio -- Darriet Perry set a school record for career rushing touchdowns as Florida International defeated Akron 27-17 on Saturday.

Perry scored twice for a total of 26 in his career. His 2-yard run tied the game at 10-10 in the second quarter, and then his 3-yard run with 12:38 to play in the game provided the final margin. Perry surpassed Rashod Smith, who ran for 24 career touchdowns.

Also, Kendrick Rhodes rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown for FIU (4-2).

Wes Carroll, who threw for 303 yards, became the first FIU player to pass for at least 300 yards in consecutive games. T.Y. Hilton set a school record with 12 catches for 144 yards, and has at least 100 yards receiving in four games this season.

FIU's win snapped a two-game losing streak.

Clayton Moore passed for 157 yards and rushed for 58 and a touchdown for Akron (1-5).

FIU (3-2) at Akron (1-4) Oct. 8, 2:00

Here’s The Deal … Alright, FIU, it’s time to get your groove back.

After looking like the slam-dunk best team in the Sun Belt with wins over Louisville and UCF, the Golden Panthers sputtered in a mystifying home loss to Louisiana to make the conference race a battle. After a tough loss to a mediocre Duke team, the Golden Panthers need to hit the two foot putt before diving back into Sun Belt play against Arkansas State on the road.

If Akron isn’t the worst team in the nation, it’s in the team photo. The defense has been decent but the offense is sputtering and coughing for a second straight season. After losing to Eastern Michigan last week, the Zips have been outscored 82-26 in MAC play with a date against Ohio coming up next week. If the attack can find any semblance of the balance that led to a 36-13 win over VMI a few weeks ago, it’ll have a chance against a reeling FIU.

Why FIU Might Win: The Golden Panther offense should be able to do whatever it wants. The attack might be inconsistent over the last few weeks, but the pass protection has been terrific thanks to good decisions from veteran quarterback Wesley Carroll and a strong first half of the season from the line. The Golden Panthers have the speed and athleticism to connect on the deep play when needed, but they shouldn’t have too many problems simply keeping things balanced against an Akron defensive front that’s been awful at getting into the backfield. There won’t be any pressure to worry about.

Why Akron Might Win: Akron’s big defensive problems have come against the run and mobile quarterbacks, but that’s not FIU’s game. The Golden Panthers can run a bit, but the passing game is stronger. Akron’s secondary isn’t anything special, but it’s far better than a run defense getting gashed for 204 yards per game. On the other side of the ball, the FIU secondary is the weak link getting picked apart by Duke for 335 yards last week and getting touched up for 363 yards by Louisville in Week 2. So far FIU has come up with just one pick, and the D hasn’t come up with any takeaways in the last two games.

What To Watch Out For: FIU’s top offensive weapon will always by T.Y. Hilton, but the star receiver is playing a bit dinged up. Junior Wayne Times has been a steady factor all season long, catching 24 passes for 264 yards and a score, and he’s starting to do more as a kickoff returner having a huge day against Louisiana-Lafayette with four returns for 158 yards. At 5-11 and 178 pounds he’s not all that big, but the former quarterback has 4.4 speed and can stretch the field.

Akron freshman back Jawon Chisolm continues to be the bright spot in the offense. After running 25 times for 133 yards against Cincinnati, the coaching staff has continued to feed him the ball over and over again working him for 27 carries for 188 yards and a score against VMI and 25 times for 122 yards and a score against Eastern Michigan. The 6-0, 193-pounder has good speed and is a slippery runner with nice hands, but he wasn’t considered much of a workhorse coming into the season. That changed in a hurry.

What Will Happen: Akron has some nice pieces and good potential, but it doesn’t have the lines. FIU has had two straight disappointing performances, but it hasn’t play all that poorly in close losses. Now the Golden Panther pop will come back and Akron won’t have any answers in the passing game.
