CFN’s WAC Bloggers put the previous weekend under the microscope, looking for the Lucky 7
|
DL is Dalton Lee.
1. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
DL: Derek Carr; QB, Fresno State – After a subpar performance against Boise State, Derek came back strong and threw for two touchdowns and 248 yards on 23-39 attempts. He also ran for a touchdown as the Bulldogs defeated Utah State, 31 -24, to go 2-0 in the WAC conference
2. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
DL: John Hardy-Tuliau; CB, Hawaii – Along with his seven tackles, John intercepted a pass in their red zone to prevent a San Jose State score as well as caused a fumble when he knocked the ball out of the hands of Spartan receiver, Noel Grigsby, at the goal line to prevent a sure touchdown. But the Warriors lost in the waning seconds of an absolutely winnable game, 28-27.
3. SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DL: Travis Johnson; DE, San Jose Spartans – In the 4th quarter, down 27-20 against Hawaii, Travis blocked an extra point that was run back by teammate Duke Ihenacho for two points and kept the margin inside of a touchdown, 27-22. With a just over three minutes left in the game he came up big once again, and blocked a 42 yard field goal, to give the Spartans a chance to win in regulation. Travis was rewarded for his efforts when Spartans score on a 37 yard touchdown pass with only 36 seconds left in the game.
4. COACH OF THE WEEK
DL: Pat Hill; Fresno State – Coming off a lopsided 57-7 loss at the hands of Boise State last week, Fresno State needed a victory against upstart Utah State, one of the biggest surprises in the WAC. Down 21-14 at halftime, the Bulldogs were staring down the barrel of a 2-5 record. But Pat Hill’s Dogs held the Aggies scoreless in the 2nd half while scoring two 4th quarter touchdown and won the biggest game in the WAC so far this season. The 3-4 Bulldogs lead the WAC with a 2-0 conference record.
5. BEST GAME OF THE WEEK
DL: San Jose Spartans vs. Hawaii Warriors – Can a game with 12 turnovers be consider the “Best WAC game of the Week”? Absolutely. Especially if you add a touchdown off of a fumbled kickoff, a great 2nd half comeback by Hawaii, a blocks extra point by San Jose that a cramping Spartan, Duke Ihenacho ran back for a two point conversion, and a Spartan touchdown in the final seconds of their Homecoming game for their first home victory against the Warriors in this century ( last victory in 1997 ).
6. BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE WEEK
DL: Nevada Wolf Pack’s offensive performance – Nevada’s offensive exploded for 598 yards against New Mexico in a 49-7 rout. Combined with last weeks 699 yards against UNLV, the Wolf Pack have amassed almost 1300 yards of offense in the last two games. But the Lobos and Rebels have combined for only one victory so far this season. Next week’s showdown against Fresno State will go a long way in proving whether or not Nevada is for real.
7. BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE WEEK
DL: Hawaii’s Special Teams performance –Hawaii’s special teams performance was bad when returner Scott Harding’s fumbled kickoff was returned for a Spartan touchdown. Their performance was worse when a blocked extra point by San Jose’s Travis Johnson, was run back for a two point conversion. Their performance won the “Biggest Disappointment of the Week” when Travis blocked a field goal with less than four minutes left in the game, ON THE SAME BULL RUSH MANEUVER that he used to block the extra point.
