Spring 2012 - Key Questions

Texas A&M

What's happening this spring season? Several FSN publishers provide their insider info on the key questions that matter to the real world of college football. Scroll down for the links to all the spring questions.

Q: Is the plan for Texas A&M to become Houston offensively?

From David Sandhop, http://tamu.scout.com … Yes. The plan is to run the same system that Kevin Sumlin used at Houston with plenty of quick timing passes and a lot of four-receiver sets.

Is there an overall attitude change in philosophies on defense going to the defensive SEC after dealing with the high-octane Big 12 attacks?

The new coaching staff started off practices late. The staff felt that lack of conditioning was a big reason in the team losing second half leads and fading down the stretch. Thus, the coaches delayed the start of spring practice about a month to improve conditioning before workouts.

On defense, the Aggies are moving from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3 base. Guys like Damontre Moore and Brandon Alexander, who were stand-up rush linebackers on the edge, are now putting a hand on the ground as a weakside defensive end. Somebody like Sean Porter, who also rushed from the opposite edge, is now being asked to play a more traditional OLB spot so he's learning to drop in coverage.

With graduation and the switch to a 4-3, the team will have a hard time filling both interior tackle spots with roughly four legitimate interior prospects this spring. The team is in big trouble if injuries strike.

What’s the biggest insider storyline from this spring that the average fan should know about?

RB Christine Michael is already working out with the team despite coming off knee surgery. He was terrific last year before getting hurt, and he should be back and ready to roll this season. Jonathan Mathis is also participating in drills even though he also underwent knee surgery last fall.
