Spring 2012 - Key Questions

What's happening this spring season? Several FSN publishers provide their insider info on the key questions that matter to the real world of college football. Scroll down for the links to all the spring questions.

Is the receiving corps really going to be okay after losing so much talent?

From Clay Henry, … The Hogs aren't going to miss the best collective bunch of receivers in school history because the next batch is good, too. Cobi Hamilton and Marquel Wade each caught ten passes in the last scrimmage. Julian Horton looks like an SEC receiver, too. His clinching blocks on some of the touchdown catches for Hamilton and Wade were outstanding in the last scrimmage.

The down side is that the defensive secondary is still getting rebuilt, but it's going to look worse against QB Tyler Wilson and the Hog receivers than it will in most games next fall.

Outside of a head coach, what's the one thing missing to be good enough to get over the hump and into the national title chase?

Making sure the linebacking corps is set and getting RB Knile Davis back and healthy. The defense is experimenting at linebacker with Tenarius Wright moving from end. Can he take Jerry Franklin's spot at mike linebacker? It's too early to tell, but he doesn't look out of place. The coaches planned to look at Alonzo Highsmith there, but he missed the entire spring with a partially torn pectoral tendon – and the next coaches will have to do their own evaluation. The inside linebackers (Will and Mike) are interchangeable and Highsmith could probably play either side.

Davis looks recovered from August surgery for a broken ankle, but he hasn't been exposed to any tackling. He looks fast and quick, and he may be the team's best player. His cutting appears 100 percent.

What's the biggest insider storyline from this spring that the average fan should know about?

Through two scrimmages -- with one left along with the spring game -- the story of the spring on the field is Wilson. He looks like an NFL quarterback in everything he does. Wilson's accuracy and ability to change plays has improved. This is his fourth UA spring and he looks like a quarterback with SEC experience.
