Week 2 CFN Fearless Prediction - Maine at Boston College
|
Maine (0-0) at Boston College (0-1) Sept. 8, 1:00, ESPN3
Here’s The Deal: For a while Boston College looked like a rejuvenated program in the opener with Miami. And then reality—and old habits—set in. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Eagles got lapped by the Hurricanes in an unexpectedly high scoring affair. BC now gets a chance to test its souped-up offense against much lighter competition. Maine is set to begin its 2012 campaign after being idle on opening weekend. The Black Bears went 9-4 out of the Colonial Conference a year ago, falling to Georgia Southern in the playoffs.
Why Maine Might Win: The Black Bears will be built around an O-line returning four starters, especially as the new backfield gets comfortable in expanded roles. Boston College had a rough start on defense, its first in three years without LB Luke Kuechly, allowing more than 400 yards to a mediocre Miami offense.
Why Boston College Might Win: So far, so good with coordinator Doug Martin employing a more wide-open system that allows Chase Rettig to take chances. The quarterback responded in Week 1 with a career day marked by 441 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He succeeded in spreading the ball around, led by WR Alex Amidon who had a game-high 10 catches for 149 yards.
What To Watch Out For: While Andre Williams handled the bulk of the carries, Tahj Kimble was the busiest of the BC backs, running 10 times for 50 yards, while catching eight passes for 130 yards and a score. The Eagles are also expected to add Rolandan Finch, who missed the Miami game with a foot injury, into the crowded backfield this weekend.
What Will Happen: In an interesting northeastern showdown, Boston College will build on its progress in the loss to Miami. Even in faltering late, the Eagles played with more passion and energy than in recent years. Rettig will be the catalyst, throwing for three scores and 275 yards.
CFN Prediction: Boston College 38 … Maine 16
