Week 2 CFN Fearless Prediction – Toledo at Wyoming
|
- CFN Fearless Predictions
Toledo (0-1) at Wyoming (1-0) Sept. 8, 4:00
Here’s The Deal: Toledo didn’t play all that well against Arizona, and the offense sputtered and coughed a bit, but there were chances before overtime to pull off a good road win over a BCS conference team. That might have been a rough loss, but losing at Wyoming would be extra galling considering this is supposed to be one of the MAC’s top teams. Wyoming held up relatively well in a 37-17 loss to Texas, getting most of its offense on just one play, but now it’s time to go on a run. If the Cowboys are going to live up to the expectations coming from last year, then they have to win this week before diving into the easy part of the schedule to tune up for Mountain West play.
Why Toledo Might Win: Does Wyoming have the offense to keep up? It might not have looked like it against Arizona, but the Rockets have a high-octane attack that will be among the MAC leaders and nation’s best after a few explosions. Wyoming, for all of its success last year, didn’t do much offensively and didn’t show any pop. This year’s offense should be better, but it’s not going to be good enough to keep up the pace if Toledo’s passing game starts working.
Why Wyoming Might Win: Is the Toledo offense really going to work? Under new head coach Matt Campbell, the O still has to prove it after a middling 358 yards against Arizona and not enough key plays when the game was there for the taking. Campbell ran the offense last year and did a good job when Tim Beckman took off for Illinois, but this year it still has to prove it can work. On the flip side, the defense was disastrous last week with no ability to stop the Arizona passing game.
What To Watch Out For: Toledo junior receiver Bernard Reedy had a few big games last season and exploded in the bowl win over Air Force catching four passes for 126 yards and three scores. He picked up where he left off last week making nine catches, but they only went for 55 yards. For Wyoming,
5-10, 187-pound sophomore Robert Herron is a smallish, quick target who got a little bit of work last year. He showed his potential and skill last week with a brilliant day catching five passes for 173 yards and a tough breakaway touchdown play. He’s going to get the ball in his hands as a runner even more.
What Will Happen: Wyoming tends to defy logic. The offense is okay and the run defense is non-existent, but it’s able to come up with wins. That won’t happen this week as Toledo runs for over 200 yards on the way to the win.
CFN Prediction: Toledo 34 .. Wyoming 26
