Week 4 CFN Fearless Prediction – Kent State at Buffalo

Kent State (1-1) at Buffalo (1-1) Sept. 19 , 7:00, ESPNU

Here’s The Deal: Ohio might be the bright star of the MAC East, but Buffalo and Kent State have just enough talent and potential to make a splash and provide a push for the divisional title. Each has a win under its belt and each has a devastating pass rush, but this could be an elimination game in the East race; Ohio is that good.

Why Kent State Might Win: The Golden Flashes are phenomenal at taking the ball away forcing six turnovers against Towson. There weren’t any takeaways against Kentucky, but the pass rush is aggressive enough and the defense good enough to force some mistakes. UB has yet to come up with a takeaway. Kent State doesn’t have a passing game, but UB doesn’t have a productive secondary getting burnt way too easily. Both Georgia and Morgan State threw the ball without a problem.

Why Buffalo Might Win: The Bulls have been devastating at getting into the backfield. Coming up with six sacks against Morgan State is one thing, but the Bulls also got to Georgia’s Aaron Murray three times. UB has the grinding ground game to take control early on, and if there’s any sort of a lead, the Golden Flashes don’t have the ability to mount much of a comeback. The O line just isn’t good enough.

What To Watch Out For: It’s the national showcase game for Branden Oliver, the junior UB star started off with a grinding 111 yards and a score on 30 carries against Georgia, and he blew up Morgan State for 238 yards and two touchdowns. The passing game has been efficient, but it’s Oliver who has been the key to an emerging offense. Third in the nation in rushing, this is his chance to shine.

What Will Happen: The Bulls will come up with just enough on offense in a bit of a slugfest, while the defense will blow into the KSU backfield on a regular basis to keep the yards to a minimum. There won’t be much flash, but Oliver will get the job done.
