Week 4 CFN Fearless Prediction – Idaho State at Nebraska

Idaho State (1-1) at Nebraska (2-1) Sept. 22, 3:30, BTN

Here’s The Deal: Call this the perfect timing game for a Husker team that bounced back from a tough loss to UCLA to blow away Arkansas State. With Big Ten play kicking off next week against Wisconsin and with a road date against Ohio State to follow, the team still needs to find more from its defense while the offense could handle getting star running back Rex Burkhead a game to get back in the swing of things after getting hurt in the opener against Southern Miss. The ground game has been fine and the offense overall has worked, but getting the timing down a little better on both sides isn’t a bad thing. Idaho State isn’t a bad Big Sky team, giving Air Force a wee bit of a fight in the opener before blowing away Black Hills State 38-5. The offense is terrific and could be more than a slight problem at times for the struggling Husker D.

Why Idaho State Might Win: The passing offense will push the Husker secondary. Kevin Yost is averaging 407 passing yards per game and Derek Graves leads all of FCS with 15 catches in each of the first two games. Hanging up 522 passing yards on a Black Hills State will skew the stats, but the offense threw for 365 against Air Force, too. The Bengals have a puncher’s chance to keep this interesting with its good attack, but …

Why Nebraska Might Win: Taylor Martinez should continue to bomb away. Idaho State doesn’t generate any sort of a push on the defensive front, and while the stats look fine, the secondary is about to get lit up. The run defense has been a bigger problem getting torn up by Air Force for 484 yards and seven touchdowns – Nebraska should be able to do whatever it wants. The running game will be the key getting Burkhead back in the mix, but the more Martinez can throw and keep the passing game rolling, the better.

What To Watch Out For: Idaho State leads all of FCS in punting with backup quarterback C.J. Reyes connecting on 10-of-12 passes on the year and bombing away for 48.3 yards per kick with two inside the 20 against Air Force and averaging 41.7 yards per shot with two of his three kicks inside the 20 against Black Hills State. Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah hasn’t broken a punt return yet, but he’s an elite talent who’ll get plenty of chances.

What Will Happen: Nebraska will put up 600 yards of offense, Burkhead will be great for a quarter, and it’ll be a good scrimmage – but with the defense getting yelled at. Idaho State will put up more than 300 yards through the air.

CFN Prediction: Nebraska 52 … Idaho State 17
