Week 4 CFN Fearless Prediction – All the Mountain West previews and picks

Week 4 Fearless Predictions
- BYU at Boise State
- Wyoming at Idaho
- Utah State at Colorado State
- San Jose State at San Diego State
- New Mexico at New Mexico State
- Fresno State at Tulsa
- Air Force at UNLV
- Nevada at Hawaii

Wyoming (0-3) at Idaho (0-3) Sept. 22, 5:00, ESPN#

Here's The Deal: Easily two of the biggest disasters to start the season, all the fun and all the promise from last year went bye-bye for Wyoming with a rough 0-3 start including a loss last week to Cal Poly, while Idaho hasn't been close in its first three losses hurt mostly by an opening day clunker to Eastern Washington. With three road games in four weeks up next, the Vandals need to win and win now, while the Cowboys are in big trouble with road games against Nevada and Fresno State along with home dates with Air Force and Boise State over the next four games.

What Will Happen: The miserable Idaho offense will have a little bit of success against the miserable Wyoming run defense, but the Cowboys will get a bit more out of the passing game on the way to a win in a mistake-filled game.

CFN Prediction: Wyoming 27 … Idaho 17

Utah State (2-1) at Colorado State (1-2) Sept. 22, 7:00

Here's The Deal: Utah State is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Wisconsin, missing a game-winning field goal attempt wide in the final seconds, but at the very least the team has proven it can hang with the bigger-name teams beating Utah in overtime before last week's defeat. The defense has been fantastic so far and the offense appears ready to blow up, and now is the time to do it against a Colorado State team that hit the skids after the excitement of starting out the Jim McElwain era with a win over Colorado. After losing to North Dakota State and San Jose State badly, the Rams have to show signs of life on offense before kicking off Mountain West play at Air Force next week.

What Will Happen: The Utah State defense will rise up and stop the Rams cold. The Colorado State offensive line has been a disaster so far. Wisconsin's hasn't been up to its usual snuff, but if Utah State can dominate against that front five, it should own the Rams this week in a cathartic blowout.

CFN Prediction: Utah State 42 … Colorado State 10

San Jose State (2-1) at San Diego State (2-1) Sept. 22, 8:00

Here's The Deal: Now how good does San Jose State look? The Spartans pushed Stanford hard in a 20-17 Week One loss, and while blowing away UC Davis and Colorado State hardly qualifies as reason to go overboard, it's a big deal for a program that's not used to success. With three road games in the next four, getting the high-octane offense ramped up for a good game against San Diego State is a must to start to get more national respect. The Aztecs have run well and have been terrific on the defensive front, but it took too much of an effort to get by North Dakota after destroying Army. With the Mountain West opener at Fresno State next week, SDSU has to be finely tuned, especially on offense.

What Will Happen: The running of San Diego State will be better than the passing of San Jose State. Both teams have fantastic pass rushes, and the pressure applied by the Aztecs will mean more. It should be an entertaining game with SDSU getting a good win that won't get enough credit.

CFN Prediction: San Diego State 38 … San Jose State 34

New Mexico (1-2) at New Mexico State (1-2) Sept. 22, 8:00, ESPN3

Here's The Deal: It would be a really big deal for the Bob Davie era if he could get the Lobos past New Mexico State. New Mexico hasn't had much luck over the last two weeks in ugly performances against Texas and Texas Tech, but there's a massive rebuilding job that needs to be done on both sides of the ball. Now the team gets a game on its own level against a New Mexico State team with a defense that has gone bye-bye. At least New Mexico lost to two Big 12 teams; the Aggies were blown away by Ohio and UTEP. Even so, the passing game is good and there haven't been a slew of big errors so far.

What Will Happen: The two teams might not be very good, but the level of play will be much, much higher than it's been over the last few seasons. NMSU Austin Franklin has been on a tear with 415 yards and five touchdown catches over the first three games, and New Mexico doesn't have an answer to stop him. However, the nation's leading kickoff returner, sophomore Chase Clayton, has the potential to give the Lobos a shot to stay alive.

CFN Prediction: New Mexico State 28 … New Mexico 17

Must Watch Rating (5 – Ray Lewis: A Football Life, 1 – Frankenweenie): 2

UNLV (0-3) at Air Force (1-1) Sept. 22, 10:00

Here's The Deal: The Mountain West season kicks off with Air Force getting two weeks off to prepare after the tough loss to Michigan. The rushing attack leads the nation averaging 387 yards per game, while the defense did a nice job against the Wolverines and kept it close in a 31-25 loss. After this begins a great run of four home games in the next five, while UNLV is on the road for four of the next six games after this and needs a win to break an eight-game losing streak going back to last season. The Rebels have been much better, but that hasn't counted for much in three close losses.

What Will Happen: Air Force won't run wild on John Lotulelei and the suddenly stout UNLV run defense, but the offense won't be able to control the clock and won't do much running of its own. The Rebels will put up a battle, but they won't be able to keep up the pace in the second half in a closer game than expected.

CFN Prediction: Air Force 30 … UNLV 23

Must Watch Rating (5 – Ray Lewis: A Football Life, 1 – Frankenweenie): 1.5

Nevada (2-1) at Hawaii (1-1) Sept. 22, 10:30, NBC Sports Network

Here's The Deal: It's the running game vs. the passing attack. Nevada can throw a little bit, too, but it's the running game that's been the key part of an offensive explosion to start the season. However, the defense has been awful, especially against the pass, allowing 324 yards per game. After getting kept under wraps by USC, and not needed in a 54-2 win over a punchless Lamar team, now is the time for Norm Chow's passing game to get on a roll. Hawaii isn't supposed to averaged just 179 passing yards per game, and after this week that will change in a big way.

What Will Happen: Hawaii will start to look like it's supposed to, but the running of Stefphon Jefferson will rip apart the Warrior defense at times. However, Nevada's defense is too shaky and the Hawaii pass rush and defensive front seven are playing too well right now. Chow will kick off life in the Mountain West with a stunner.

CFN Prediction: Hawaii 34 … Nevada 31
