Week 5 CFN Fearless Prediction & Game Preview – Towson at LSU

Towson (2-1) at LSU (4-0) Sept. 29, 7:00, ESPNU

Here’s The Deal: Okay, LSU, it’s time to get that spark back. After rolling through the first three weeks without a problem, the Tigers struggled and looked merely mortal in a 12-10 win over Auburn. After dropping down the rankings a bit after starting out the year No. 1, now LSU is going to be considered ripe for the picking by a rested Florida next week. But it’s all a bit premature. The Tigers still have a phenomenal defense, and the running game is stellar, but they had just one mediocre performance in an SEC road game. Even so, this is the game to sharpen up the passing game and get more out of the pass rush. Towson is 2-1, but that one loss came by 20 points to Kent State – this is about to be a very, very long day for a team with a strong FCS D.

Why Towson Might Win: The pass defense leads all FCS teams allowing just 107 yards per game. With a nice win over William & Mary and a victory over St. Francis, the Tiger defense was able to establish itself early on with a strong pass rush and great play in the secondary. Romale Tucker has three sacks leading a defense that cranked out three sacks in each of the first three games and allowed just 156 total passing yards over the last two weeks. LSU’s pass protection has been a bit iffy so far and will be tested a little bit.

Why LSU Might Win: As good as the Towson pass defense might be, it has yet to come up with a pick. The D has only forced one fumble on the year despite all the pressure and all the aggressiveness. LSU won’t make enough big mistakes needed to keep this interesting. The bigger problem for Towson will be an LSU running game that will get rumbling from the start and won’t let up. The O line had a mediocre day against Auburn, and this week there shouldn’t be a problem blasting away for the first few drives to put this out of reach right away. However …

What To Watch Out For: Zach Mettenberger has to get going. It’s not like the LSU quarterback has been bad, but he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire yet, struggling last week throwing for 169 yards and no scores on a 15-of-27 day. He has the talent and he has the arm, but he has to be far more consistent. It’s nitpicking considering he was extremely accurate over the first three games, but this is the game where he has to open things up a little bit more to show Florida something different. This is the game he has to strike a little bit of fear into the rest of the SEC.

What Will Happen: LSU will win without breathing hard with a more spirited effort than normal. This is nothing more than a pure tune-up for Florida, but after the Auburn game LSU will come out a little more focused and a bit sharper.
