Week 6 CFN Fearless Prediction & Game Preview – Rice at Memphis

Rice (1-4) at Memphis (0-4) Oct. 6, 7:00, FCS

Here’s The Deal: Two of the FBS’ worst programs will look to one another this weekend for a chance at a much-needed springboard victory. Rice just got done being swatted away at home by rival Houston for a third-straight loss following what appeared to be a signature Week 2 win at Kansas. Now in his sixth year on the sidelines, David Bailiff could be running out of time as the leader of the Owls. Memphis’ Justin Fuente, on the other hand, is just getting started, building from the bottom up a program noticeably light on talent. His Tigers were close in the first two games, but have been progressively less competitive over the last two weeks.

Why Rice Might Win: Memphis has looked lost on both sides of the ball, but especially on defense. The Tigers have one sack in four games, and are ranked 110th overall in the country. Rice will keep its host in the dark, especially if multi-dimensional QB Taylor McHargue can return from a shoulder injury. If not, the Owls will just put a little more weight on WR Sam McGuffie, who’s playing lately as if he hopes to impress NFL scouts.

Why Memphis Might Win: The Tigers’ woes heightened a few days ago when it was learned that leading rusher Jerrell Rhodes was no longer with the team. The remedy? Air it out. Memphis might as well go right after a shaky Rice secondary by turning loose QB Jacob Karam. The Texas Tech transfer, who’ll look to bounce back from last week’s Duke disaster by getting the ball into the hands of top receivers Marcus Rucker and Keiwone Malone.

What To Watch Out For: McHargue is listed as day-to-day, which is too bad, because he was just beginning to heat up when he got hurt. Redshirt freshman Driphus Jackson started last weekend, and didn’t play poorly, throwing two touchdown passes without a pick. Still, he’s raw and will get flustered in the pocket if Memphis is finally able to get off its blocks.

What Will Happen: Whoever takes snaps for Rice should have few problems solving a Memphis defense that’s playing clueless right now. The Owls will treat this weekend’s trip to the Liberty Bowl as a much-needed opportunity to reverse course after losing three in a row. McGuffie will remain hot, helping his team to a double-digit win.
