Player of the Year: Manti T’eo

Player of the Year other than Geno Smith: Yeah, see above.

Surprise team so far: Oregon State

Disappointing team so far: Virginia Tech

Coach of the year: Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia

I was dead wrong about: Yeah, that whole “Michigan will beat Alabama and Denard Robinson will win the Heisman” thing wasn’t one of my finer moments, apparently.

I was right on about: South Carolina being good enough to play for a national title, at least that’s how it looks thus far.

Favorite moment: I have no idea what the guy’s name is, but the shirtless, somewhat plump, Petey Pablo shirt twirling like a helicopter, North Carolina State fan in the aftermath of their stunning win over Florida State takes the cake for me. So much about that screams to us why we love this stuff so much. Because in a game that won’t vault NCSU to a championship or anything in a sport that’s constantly been run down by scandal, BCS follies, and biases, there still is that raw emotion that brings us back to why we started liking this stuff in the first place. Pure awesome.

My Three Big Calls for the rest of the year:
-Southern California will hand Oregon its first loss on Nov. 3.
-Michigan will still win the B1G
-Every team will wind up with at least one loss by season’s end

Midseason grade: C. Some weeks, like this last week, felt like you had to be glued to the television from Thursday through Saturday night. But the week before was underwhelming, and it just feels like big time out of conference games are getting more rare than a steak cut right off the cow five minutes prior.
