Week 7 Fearless Predictions - Boston College at Florida State

Boston College (1-4) at Florida State (5-1) Oct. 13, 5:30, ESPN2

Here’s The Deal: And just like that, the ACC no longer houses a contender for the BCS National Championship Game. Third-ranked Florida State, seemingly ready to finally recapture the glory days, went to sleep in the second half of last week’s NC State game, and woke up to a new set of goals in 2012 that top out with a league crown. The Seminoles, who’ll now have to play their way back to the top of the Atlantic Division, don’t have a lot of margin for error if they want to avoid another December bowl game. Boston College, and specifically head coach Frank Spaziani, would take any postseason game at this stage of another faltering campaign. The Eagles officially began to circle the drain with last week’s loss to Army, a program that started Week 6 without a win. With more than half a season remaining, BC is already playing the role of spoiler, wondering who’ll be calling the shots from the sidelines in 2013.

Why Boston College Might Win: For Florida State, this week is a sandwich game that can easily be overlooked. In the rear view mirror is the loss to NC State, while up ahead is a trip to play rival Miami. If the Eagles truly do have a prayer, it’ll have to come from an offense that’s produced at least 31 points in all but the Northwestern game. QB Chase Rettig has played well in Doug Martin’s system, throwing 10 touchdown passes and three picks, while his supporting cast continues to grow. RB Andre Williams rushed for 191 yards and two scores last Saturday, and receivers Alex Amidon and Johnathan Coleman keep making plays in the passing game.

Why Florida State Might Win: If the ‘Noles don’t come out swinging on Saturday evening, it would be a shock. Yeah, they tanked over the final 30 minutes in Raleigh, but this is still one of the nation’s premier teams, with enough speed and athleticism to run circles around the lumbering Eagles. Clemson is the only team to have success against the Florida State D. Boston College won’t. The ‘Noles will whip the Eagles on the outside with ends Bjoern Werner and Cornellius Carradine, while corners Xavier Rhodes and Nick Waisome neutralize their receivers. On offense, QB EJ Manuel may not get touched by a BC pass rush that’s generated only four sacks in five games.

What To Watch: Out For: Getting Manuel back on track will be a priority after he had problems moving the offense last Saturday night. While RB Chris Thompson has been terrific, and the defense is nearly air-tight, Florida State won’t achieve its goal of winning the ACC and appearing in a BCS bowl game unless Manuel can be a consistent threat through the air. In his defense, he was sacked four times by the Wolfpack, the first time that the offensive line had let him down this season.

What Will Happen: Poor Boston College. As if the Eagles don’t have enough problems already, now they must walk into a buzz saw in Tallahassee. Florida State will take a week’s worth of frustration and negative press clippings out on an overmatched visitor, running its offense without a lot of resistance. BC can put up points … but not against this opponent. FSU will remain salty on defense, harassing Rettig into ill-advised decisions, errant throws and turnovers.
