Week 7 - WAC Fearless Predictions, Picks & Game Previews

Utah State (4-2) at San Jose State (4-1) Oct. 13, 4:00, ESPN3

Here's The Deal: And who said the WAC was dead? San Jose State has been terrific so far rolling up four straight wins including a shutout of Navy and a win at San Diego State to be one of the surprise teams of the 2012 season. The passing game has been fantastic and the pass rush is among the best in the nation, but now conference play starts and it's time to beat one of the few teams left on the slate that can pose a challenge. If everything goes according to plan, there shouldn't be any problems over the new four weeks, even with three of the next four games on the road, before hosting BYU and finishing up with Louisiana Tech. A ten-win season is in play if, and it's a big if, the Spartans can ramp up the defensive intensity even more against a great Utah State attack.

The Aggies are coming off a strange 6-3 loss to BYU, but the offense is far better than it looked in Provo with the passing game efficient and effective to go along with a defense that has yet to allow more than 19 points in regulation. The running game isn't working like it did last season, but with the defense playing so well and the schedule relatively light, it has been a nice start. It's smooth sailing after this until the road game at Louisiana Tech – the Aggies will almost certainly be 8-2 if they win this week.

What Will Happen: It's going to be a tough, low-scoring battle with the defensive front of San Jose State being the difference. The Spartan passing game will come up with just enough third down plays to keep the chains moving and Chuckie Keeton and the Aggie offense off the field.

Idaho (1-5) at Texas State (2-3) Oct. 13, 7:00, ESPN3

Here's The Deal: Dennis Franchione's Texas State team started out the year with a big, shocking win over Houston, and it's had a hard time recapturing the magic ever since. However, Idaho is a team its own size with a struggling defense that could have major problems against an attack that lost its way. After running so well over the weeks, the Bobcats have been shut down cold on the ground by Nevada and New Mexico making this game the key to the season. With four road games in the next five and San Jose State, Utah State and Louisiana Tech up next, TSU will be 2-7 going into the Navy game with a loss this week.

The Bobcats might not be playing well, but Idaho has been too inconsistent on both sides of the ball and too mistake-prone so far. There's potential for the passing game with Dominique Blackman a nice prospect, but the offense has turned it over 18 times so far and the defense can't seem to come up with a stop against any offense with a working pulse.

What Will Happen: Texas State won't find its ground game again, but there will be decent balance to keep the chains moving and Blackman off the field. The Bobcat secondary will get torched, but a +3 turnover margin will be enough to squeak by.

CFN Prediction: Texas State 37 … Idaho 31
