The Week 8 WAC Fearless Predictions, Previews & Game Analysis

San Jose State (4-2) at UTSA (5-1) Oct. 20, 2:00, ESPN3

What Will Happen: The fun of a great start for both team’s seasons hit a rough patch last week. San Jose State fell flat at home against Utah State in the WAC opener, but with a high-octane passing attack and the league’s second-ranked defense, the expectations are still high with a bowl bid still in the picture. UTSA was thumped by Rice, but it’s 1-0 in the conference after a dominant win over New Mexico State. Finally, the Roadrunners have a home run sticking around for three of the next four weeks. However, this will start a rough patch with Utah State and Louisiana Tech up next. The Spartan passing attack will have few problems against a secondary that comes up with plenty of picks, but hasn’t faced an offense with this type of firepower.

New Mexico State (1-5) at Utah State (5-2 Oct. 20, 3:00, ESPN3

What Will Happen: Utah State got back on track after a lifeless loss to BYU with a dominant 49-27 win over San Jose State. 1-0 in WAC play, now comes the easy part of the slate with UTSA and Texas State up next before going to Louisiana Tech. The offense has been strong and the defense the best in the WAC with a run defense that gives up under 100 yards per game. With a pass rush that ranks third in the nation, and with the New Mexico State offensive line awful at keeping the quarterback upright, the Utah State version of the Aggies will stop the New Mexico State kind.

Idaho (1-6) at Louisiana Tech (5-1) Oct. 20, 7:00, ESPN3

What Will Happen: Louisiana Tech might have lost to Texas A&M last week, but it showed it could light up a top SEC team and put up huge numbers in a fun fight. With one of the worst defenses in the country and an offense that has no running game whatsoever, Idaho should be in for a long, long day. The Vandals have scored a grand total of 100 points on the year, while the Bulldogs have put up 115 in the last two weeks. However, Louisiana Tech is last in the nation in pass defense and is second-to-last in total D. Idaho will get some O, but not nearly enough.
