Non-Conference Games: Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, at North Carolina at NC State

Realistic Best Case Record: 10-2
Worst Case Record: 7-5
Likely Finish: 9-3

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Old Dominion, Florida Atlantic, at Middle Tennessee, at Tulane, Southern Miss, at FIU, Tulsa, UAB, at Marshall

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: Virginia Tech, at North Carolina, at NC State

Summary: The Pirates aren’t taking it easy with the non-conference slate going to North Carolina and NC State to go along with a home date against Virginia Tech and the season opener against an Old Dominion team that dominated the FCS last season. With four road games in a five game midseason stretch, there’s only one home game against Southern Miss between September 14th and November 9th. Having to face Tulsa from the West is a rough break, but at least the game is at home. If everything goes according to plan, there shouldn’t be any problems in conference play - outside of the showdown against the Golden Hurricane – until the regular season finale at Marshall. That could be for the East title.

Non-Conference Games: at Miami, at USF, at Auburn, New Mexico State
Games Against the West: at Rice, Tulane
Realistic Best Case Record: 5-7
Worst Case Record: 1-11
Likely Finish: 2-10

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: New Mexico State, FIU

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at Miami, at East Carolina, at USF, Middle Tennessee, at Rice, at UAB, Marshall, at Auburn, Tulane, at Southern Miss

Summary: Get used to life on the road – again. The Owls are used to being everyone’s guests, and this season isn’t any different starting out with five road games in the first six with only a home game against Middle Tennessee to break up the run. If that wasn’t bad enough, going to Auburn and Southern Miss means seven of the first ten games are on the road, but there’s a break in the end staying home to face New Mexico State before closing out with rival, FIU. From the West, having to face Rice on the road isn’t going to be a plus this season, while the Tulane game will be a must win to have any hope of coming up with a strong finishing kick.

Florida International

Non-Conference Games: at Maryland, UCF, Bethune-Cookman, at Louisville
Games Against the West: Louisiana Tech, at UTEP
Realistic Best Case Record: 5-7
Worst Case Record: 1-11
Likely Finish: 2-10

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Bethune-Cookman, UAB

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at Maryland, UCF, at Louisville, at Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, East Carolina, at Middle Tennessee, at UTEP, Marshall, at Florida Atlantic

Summary: The Golden Panthers will be more experienced and should be far better this season under new head coach Ron Turner, but where are the wins going to come from? There’s the layup against Bethune-Cookman, and there’s … uh … UAB? It’s not like the schedule is full of killers, but going to Maryland and Louisville will be a problem early and UCF should be fired up early in the season. Going across town to Florida Atlantic to close out the year won’t really matter, but playing three road games in the final four after dealing with Louisiana Tech and East Carolina will be rough. Fortunately, there aren’t any road dates from October 5th until the trip to Middle Tennessee on November 9th.

Marshall

Non-Conference Games: Miami University, Gardner-Webb, at Ohio, at Virginia Tech
Games Against the West: at Tulsa, UTSA
Realistic Best Case Record: 10-2
Worst Case Record: 6-6
Likely Finish: 9-3

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Miami University, Gardner-Webb, at Ohio, UTSA, at Florida Atlantic, at Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss, UAB, at FIU

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at Virginia Tech, at Tulsa, East Carolina

Summary: There’s no West Virginia this season, but going to Ohio will be sneaky-tough before hitting the road to face Virginia Tech. Fortunately, the conference start couldn’t be any easier with UTSA and road games at Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee wrapped around two bye weeks. Follow those up against a Southern Miss team that went winless last year and a good, not great, UAB squad, and everything should set up nicely for a possible Conference USA title game preview at Tulsa. The season could revolve around the regular season finale against East Carolina.

2013 Schedule
8/31 Miami University
9/7 Gardner-Webb
9/14 at Ohio
9/21 at Virginia Tech
9/28 OPEN DATE
10/5 UTSA

11/23 at FIU
11/30 East Carolina

Middle Tennessee

Non-Conference Games: Western Carolina, at North Carolina, Memphis, at BYU
Games Against the West: at North Texas, UTEP
Realistic Best Case Record: 7-5
Worst Case Record: 3-9
Likely Finish: 4-8

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Western Carolina, Memphis, at Florida Atlantic, FIU

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at North Carolina, at BYU, East Carolina, at North Texas, Marshall, at UAB, at Southern Miss, UTEP

Summary: The Blue Raiders have to win the Sun Belt games. Starting out against Western Carolina will be a much-needed scrimmage before going to North Carolina and hosting an improved Memphis. However, if they can beat Florida Atlantic in the Conference USA opener and get by North Texas on the road and FIU at home, this could be a decent season. It’s going to take a few upsets – like UTEP in the regular season finale or on the road against UAB and Southern Miss – to have any hope of going bowling. It’s going to be a hard fight no matter what to get to six wins.

Non-Conference Games: Texas State, at Nebraska, at Arkansas, at Boise State
Games Against the West: at Louisiana Tech, North Texas
Realistic Best Case Record: 8-4
Worst Case Record: 4-8
Likely Finish: 5-7

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Texas State, FIU, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at Nebraska, at Arkansas, at Boise State, at East Carolina, at Marshall, at Louisiana Tech, at UAB

Summary: After last season’s disaster, it’s time to show that things have changed. That’s going to be tough early on with road games at Nebraska, Arkansas and Boise State after starting out against Texas State. It won’t help to go on the road three times in four weeks in the middle of the season with dates at East Carolina, Marshall and Louisiana Tech around a home game against North Texas. Fortunately, there are three games against the former Sun Belt members that should help the record. Finishing up against Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee will help before closing out at UAB.

UAB

Non-Conference Games: at Troy, at LSU, Northwestern State, at Vanderbilt
Games Against the West: Rice, at UTSA
Realistic Best Case Record: 8-4
Worst Case Record: 3-9
Likely Finish: 6-6

Pre-Preseason Projected Wins: Florida Atlantic, Northwestern State, at UTSA, Middle Tennessee, Rice, Southern Miss

Pre-Preseason Projected Losses: at Troy, at LSU, at Vanderbilt, at FIU, at Marshall, at East Carolina, Rice

Summary: Just get through the first half. Five of the first seven games are on the road, and while there’s no chance to hang around with LSU and beating Vanderbilt would be a major upset, Troy, FIU and UTSA are all going to be winnable and getting Northwestern State and Florida Atlantic at home will pad the win total. It’ll take something special to beat either Marshall or East Carolina in the back-to-back November road games, but the Blazers might come up with a winning record if they can win two out of three home games against Middle Tennessee, Rice and Southern Miss.
