Bowl Projections Non-BCS January Bowls | BCS Bowls

Sat, Dec 21 2 pm ESPN
Gildan New Mexico Bowl
University Stadium, Albuquerque, NM
Pac-12 No. 7 vs. MW No. 4 or 5

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Oregon State vs. San Jose State

Top Three Other Options: 1) Arizona, 2) Arizona State, 3) Nevada

Why? There might be a break from the pecking order considering the Las Vegas Bowl will want Nevada if its possible and it could be a fight for the New Mexico to get Arizona again or Arizona State. Considering New Mexico won't likely become bowl-worthy, San Jose State, Air Force or Utah State could end up here for a relatively sexy matchup against a Pac-12 team.

Sat, Dec 21 3:30 pm ABC
Las Vegas Bowl
Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas, NV
MW vs. Pac-12

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Nevada vs. Arizona State

Top Three Other Options: 1) Arizona, 2) Utah State, 3) Middle Tennessee

Why? Nevada would be a natural tie-in for the in-state bowl. The last time the Wolf Pack played in the Sin City Bowl? 1996. Arizona State's memories of the bowl are miserable getting whacked by Boise State 56-24 in 2011, but things have changed in a big way under Todd Graham. The two programs have only met three times with the first one a 74-2 Nevada nail-biter in 1946.

Sat, Dec 21 5:30 pm ESPN
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Bronco Stadium, Boise, ID
MAC No. 3 vs. MW

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Toledo vs. Boise State

Top Three Other Options: 1) Bowling Green, 2) Northern Illinois, 3) Utah State

Why? Northern Illinois wouldn't be too happy to make two trips to Idaho in four months. The Huskies go to Moscow to face the Vandals on September 14th, and there's no chance they'll make a second long trek. Toledo, Ohio or Bowling Green are all more likely to play here than NIU, but the Huskie-Bronco showdown would be far more enticing than anything else the MAC might offer up. Toledo was obliterated by Utah State in last year's spud bowl, and facing Boise State wouldn't exactly be a stronger option.

Sat, Dec 21 9 pm ESPN
R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, LA
C-USA vs. Sun Belt No. 1

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Louisiana Tech vs. WKU

Top Three Other Options: 1) Arkansas State, 2) Louisiana-Lafayette, 3) Middle Tennessee

Why? It could be back to the old Sun Belt days if Middle Tennessee gets in to play WKU before the two become brothers again in Conference USA. However, after last year's fiasco when Louisiana Tech was waiting to be asked by someone prettier than the Independence to the bowl dance, and missing out on the fun entirely, it'll be more than happy to drive down to New Orleans for some post-season swag. If it's Louisiana Tech vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, watch out.

Mon, Dec 23 2 pm ESPN
Beef ‘O' Brady's Bowl St Petersburg
Tropicana Field, St Petersburg, FL
C-USA vs. AAC No. 6

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Middle Tennessee vs. South Florida

Top Three Other Options: 1) UCF, 2) Tulsa, 3) Louisiana Tech

Why? The bowl will find a way to get someone nearby in. Ideally, Conference USA has the potential to provide Florida Atlantic or Florida International, but that won't happen. The AAC should be able to deliver either UCF or South Florida, with the Bulls the likely choice after the Knights played in last year's bowl beating Ball State 38-17.

Tue, Dec 24 8 pm ESPN
Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl
Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, HI
C-USA vs. MW

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Tulsa vs. Air Force

Top Three Other Options: 1) San Jose State, 2) Marshall, 3) Rice

Why? The hope and dream is for Hawaii to be good enough to occupy the Mountain West's spot; it won't be. Air Force is as national as the conference gets and might draw a little bit of a crowd, but there aren't any great options in terms of fan bases from Conference USA. Tulsa made the trip in 2010 and put on a show, lighting up Hawaii 62-35.

Thu, Dec 26 6 pm ESPN
Little Caesars Pizza Bowl
Ford Field, Detroit, MI
MAC No. 2 vs. Big Ten No. 8

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Northern Illinois vs. West Virginia*

Top Three Other Options: 1) Bowling Green, 2) Toledo, 3) Indiana

Why? Ohio, Kent State, Ball State, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green - throw a dart at a board and you might hit the right MAC team. There won't be any available Big Ten teams if the conference sends two to the BCS. If just one gets the nod, Indiana and Minnesota are the likely top options. If there aren't any Big Ten teams available, it could be a battle between West Virginia, Syracuse, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and others for the spot. The Mountaineers travel better.

Thu, Dec 26 9:30 pm ESPN
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA
Army vs. MW No. 2

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: San Diego State vs. Arizona

Top Three Other Options: 1) Oregon State, 2) USC, 3) Fresno State

Why? Here's the problem. Oregon State might be the right fit, but it plays San Diego State on September 21st. The Aztecs might seem like an automatic choice because it's a home game, but it's not like the house was rocking in last year's Poinsettia - the bowl might want some new blood. Arizona or Arizona State could make the trip west, but USC and UCLA would be stronger choices.

Fri, Dec 27 2:30 pm ESPN
Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, MD
C-USA vs. ACC No. 8

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: East Carolina vs. NC State

Top Three Other Options: 1) Marshall, 2) Wake Forest, 3) Syracuse

Why? Maryland would be a natural choice if it's eligible, but that probably won't happen. Syracuse will be looking for a place to play, and Virginia Tech might be a bit of a dream. Miami could fit the slot, but it doesn't travel well. Marshall makes far more geographic sense than other Conference USA bowl options like Tulsa, UTEP and Louisiana Tech. The East Carolina-Marshall winner will be here.

Fri, Dec 27 6 pm ESPN
Texas Bowl
Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX
Big Ten No. 6 vs. Big 12 No. 6

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Minnesota vs. Texas Tech

Top Three Other Options: 1) Baylor, 2) TCU, 3) Indiana

Why? It worked so well last year, why not give it another try? Texas Tech won a 34-31 thriller, but that was nothing compared to the 44-41 classic in the 2006 Insight. Baylor and TCU aren't exactly local, but they're only three hours away from Houston; Lubbock is a hike. Indiana could be the choice from the Big Ten, while Northwestern might be in the mix if it disappoints.

Fri, Dec 27 9:30 pm ESPN
Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl
AT&T Park, San Francisco, CA
BYU vs. Pac-12 No. 6

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: BYU vs. Washington

Top Three Other Options: 1) Oregon State, 2) Arizona State, 3) Arizona

Why? If BYU doesn't get into the BCS, it'll be locked in here. There are worse things in the world than going to San Francisco. USC and UCLA are always on the bowl's radar, and while Washington might be a bit of a reach, it could be a nice get. Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon State might be in the pecking order.

Sat, Dec 28 12 pm ESPN
New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
AAC No. 4 vs. Big 12 No. 7

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Connecticut vs. TCU

Top Three Other Options: 1) Rutgers, 2) Texas Tech, 3) West Virginia

Why? Will the Pinstripe want West Virginia back after last year? Maybe. TCU, Texas Tech and Baylor will all be in the running to go cold weather bowling, but the AAC team might be easy. UCF and South Florida will probably be needed closer to home, and Cincinnati, Rutgers and Louisville will be in bigger bowls. Connecticut falls into the slot.

Sat, Dec 28 3:20 pm ESPN
Belk Bowl
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
AAC No. 3 vs. ACC No. 5

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Cincinnati vs. North Carolina

Top Three Other Options:
1) Rutgers, 2) NC State, 3) Louisville

Why? Louisville and Rutgers will probably take the top two spots in the AAC with Cincinnati likely third in the pecking order. The Belk would love to get the Tar Heels, but NC State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech might be in the hunt.

Sat, Dec 28 6:45 pm ESPN
Russell Athletic Bowl
Florida Citrus Bowl, Orlando, FL
ACC No. 3 vs. AAC No. 2

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Virginia Tech vs. Louisville

Top Three Other Options: 1) Cincinnati, 2) Rutgers, 3) North Carolina

Why? Here's the call. Rutgers will upset Louisville and will end up in the BCS, while Cincinnati might come close. The Cardinals will be really, really disappointed if they end up in Orlando instead of Miami for the Orange Bowl, but this still isn't a bad bowl. Virginia Tech will turn things back around after a rocky 2012 and should be one of the hot teams going into the post-season.

Sat, Dec 28 10:15 pm ESPN
Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl
Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
Big Ten No. 4 of 5 vs. Big 12 No. 4

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Northwestern vs. Kansas State

Top Three Other Options: 1) Baylor, 2) Oklahoma State, 3) Michigan

Why? Wildcats vs. Wildcats, purple vs. purple. The two have played twice with Northwestern winning 51-3 in 1941 and 21-0 in 1938. By the way, how's this for a fun stat? KSU went 4-4-1 in 1938. How many winning seasons did it come up with between 1938 and 1991? Four. Both programs should be just on the outside of their respective conference puzzles looking in, but they'll each be in the hunt for a decent bowl bid.

Mon, Dec 30 11:45 am ESPN
Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl
Amon G Carter Stadium, Ft Worth, TX
MW vs. Navy

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Utah State vs. Navy

Top Three Other Options: 1) Nevada, 2) San Diego State, 3) San Jose State

Why? Navy shouldn't have too many problems getting to six wins for its assigned bowl tie-in, but then there's a problem. San Jose State will likely be the best choice, but the Spartans and Midshipmen play on November 23rd. Air Force would be another terrific option for a bowl called the Armed Forces, but it'll play Navy in Colorado Springs on October 5th. Utah State has never played the Midshipmen, and if this is the matchup, it would be a great showdown of top ground games.

Mon, Dec 30 3:15 pm ESPN
Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl
LP Field, Nashville, TN
SEC No. 7 vs. ACC No. 6

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Tennessee vs. Wake Forest

Top Three Other Options: 1) Vanderbilt, 2) North Carolina, 3) Miami

Why? Tennessee is good enough to get to six wins, at least, and go bowling, but it's going to be a battle to get there. Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Mississippi State could slip in if the Vols aren't available. Wake Forest, North Carolina, NC State and Syracuse are all in play for the bowl. While it wouldn't be right next door, Wake Forest fans would have a relatively manageable 440 miles to see a post-season game.

Mon, Dec 30 6:45 pm ESPN
Valero Alamo Bowl
Alamodome, San Antonio, TX
Pac-12 No. 2 vs. Big 12 No. 3

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State

Top Three Other Options: 1) UCLA, 2) Oklahoma, 3) USC

Why? Will the Pac-12 get two teams into the BCS? Stanford could go from being deep in the hunt for the national title to the Alamo with a few key losses. This would be a step down for the Cardinal, while Arizona State, Washington or USC would be fired up at the improved post-season slot. The odd team out from Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will be really, really disappointed to make the trip to San Antonio.

Mon, Dec 30 10:15 pm ESPN
Holiday Bowl
Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA
Big 12 No. 5 vs. Pac-12 No. 3

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Baylor vs. USC

Top Three Other Options: 1) Kansas State, 2) UCLA, 3) Texas Tech

Why? Baylor took care of business last season against UCLA with a dominant 49-26 Holiday Bowl win, and while there could be a rematch, an improved USC, if it really is improved, is the more likely option. Texas Tech, Kansas State, TCU and Oklahoma State could get the Big 12's nod, but Baylor should finish in the top six in the conference and would be an easy choice for a game known for its fireworks.

Tue, Dec 31 12:30 pm ESPN
AdvoCare V100 Bowl
Independence Stadium, Shreveport, LA
ACC No. 7 vs. SEC

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Miami vs. Missouri

Top Three Other Options: 1) Wake Forest, 2) Mississippi State, 3) Auburn

Why? Take your pick of several SEC teams looking to come up with bounceback years - Arkansas, Auburn or Missouri - and there's a chance it could end up here. With its brutal schedule, Ole Miss will probably have to claw its way to six wins to get a bowl bid. NC State, Wake Forest, Syracuse and Miami will all be fighting for bowl spots, and the pecking order will all depend on whether or not the ACC gets two teams into the BCS.

Tue, Dec 31 2 pm CBS
Hyundai Sun Bowl
Sun Bowl, El Paso, TX
ACC No. 4 vs. Pac-12 No. 4

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Georgia Tech vs. UCLA

Top Three Other Options: 1) Virginia Tech, 2) North Carolina, 3) Arizona State

Why? Georgia Tech was able to sneak into the Sun last year despite its 6-7 record - it lost the ACC title game to Florida State - but it made the most of the opportunity by eating USC's lunch in a 21-7 butt-kicking. Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Miami could represent the ACC, while Arizona, Arizona State, and looking for redemption, USC all make geographic sense from the Pac-12 South. UCLA would be wildly disappointed to be here instead of a bigger bowl, but after last year's bowl clunker against Baylor, the program can't take any post-season game for granted.

Tue, Dec 31 4 pm ESPN
AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, TN
C-USA No. 1 or American vs. SEC No. 8 or 9

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Marshall vs. Arkansas

Top Three Other Options: 1) East Carolina, 2) Tulsa, 3) Rice

Why? It's an odd bowl pairing for the SEC and a potential nightmare for Conference USA if its champion gets blasted by a mediocre squad from a BCS league. Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Ole Miss will all be on the table, but considering Memphis might as well be in Arkansas, this is a no-brainer if Bret Bielema can turn things around just a wee bit. The Marshall/East Carolina winner in the Conference USA East showdown will likely be the one to try upholding the league's honor.

Tue, Dec 31 8 pm ESPN
Chick-fil-A Bowl
Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA
ACC No. 2 vs. SEC No. 5

CFN Preview 2013 Projected Matchup: Florida State vs. South Carolina

Top Three Other Options: 1) Clemson, 2) Missouri, 3) Florida

Why? With two teams certain to get into the BCS, and with the Cotton, Capital One and Outback gobbling up SEC teams, Missouri might sneak into a fantastic game if it stays healthy and comes up with a rebound year, but South Carolina is the call. Florida State could be national title good, but if it loses to Clemson its ACC dream might be gone, and if it loses to Florida on the road the BCS could go bye-bye. Basically, the Clemson-Florida State loser will probably be here, but Virginia Tech could end up getting the call if two ACCers play in the big money battles.
