Key Question No. 21 - Who (if anyone) busts the BCS?

21. Who (if anyone) busts the BCS?

Richard Cirminiello: Some of the most memorable moments provided by the BCS since 1998 were provided by so-called BCS busters, such as Boise State, Utah, Hawaii and Northern Illinois. Do the mid-sized programs have another contender that can buck the system in January? The Jordan Lynch-led Huskies have a shot again, provided they win at Iowa and Purdue in the first four games, but it’s more likely that the winner of Boise State at Fresno State on Sept. 20 will crash the party. The Broncos are, well, the Broncos, while the Bulldogs and QB Derek Carr should score on everyone this fall.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: It’s going to come from the Mountain West. Remember, all you have to do is finish in the top 12 in the final BCS rankings, or finish 16th with a champion from a BCS conference finishing lower. As long as a “non-AQ” team can get to 10-2, it’ll be right there on the doorstep to one of the five big games. Fresno State can do that. The Bulldogs are loaded with a dominant passing game, a terrific defense, and a star in quarterback Derek Carr who should be able to get the team past Rutgers in the opener and at Colorado a few weeks later. If the Bulldogs are 4-0 – with Boise State also up in September – it’s going to take a major upset to keep them out of the BCS. However, even if everything works out according to plan, there’s still the Mountain West championship to deal with. Boise State is going to be Boise State, but it has to start out the year at Washington and has to go do Fresno State, BYU and San Diego State, who could be knee deep in the BCS hunt, too. The Aztecs play at Ohio State early and have to deal with Oregon State, but they get Fresno State and Boise State at home.
