19. Who's this year's Kansas State, the team that goes from outside the Top 25 to a BCS bowl game?

Richard Cirminiello: Baylor. The Big 12, a league with no clear frontrunner or powerhouse program, is most likely to birth a 2013 upstart. The Bears have a head of steam off last season’s sizzling finish, and an offense predictably loaded with speed and playmakers. New QB Bryce Petty won’t skip a beat under Art Briles, especially since he’s surrounded by RB Lache Seastrunk, WR Tevin Reese and a nasty left side of the line. If a questionable D, which does return eight starters, makes even modest strides, Baylor is capable of qualifying for its first-ever BCS bowl trip.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: Fresno State could be BCS bound as a buster by going 11-1, or possible 10-2 with a slew of major breaks. Miami tied for the Coastal title last season and could slide into the ACC championship this season if the defense improves a little bit. With this offense, it’s not a stretch to think the Canes might be able to pull off a few shockers and get to the Orange Bowl. Northern Illinois might start out the year with four road games in the first five, but it has the makeup and talent to go 11-1, get to the MAC title game again by splitting against Iowa and Purdue. Michigan State – technically 28th in the initial Coaches Poll – has the best defense in the Big Ten and could easily start coming up with the close wins after losing tight game after tight game last season. And then there’s Kansas State – who could easily turn into this year’s Kansas State. The Wildcats have to revamp and replace several key parts on defense, and have to get over the loss of Collin Klein, but it’s going to be a typical Bill Snyder team that’ll be deep in the hunt for the Big 12 title again if it can come up with a split against Texas and Oklahoma State in the conference road openers.
