Key Question No. 10 - Will Lane Kiffin survive beyond the 2013 season?

10. Will Lane Kiffin survive beyond the 2013 season?

Richard Cirminiello: Yes. Sure, he’s on the proverbial hot seat after last season’s debacle, on and away from the field. But Kiffin is beginning to look like the kind of coach who does his best work when expectations are somewhat dampened. And they are certainly dampened entering 2013. Still, even with a lack of depth, there’s enough talent on both sides of the ball for the Trojans to get somewhere in the neighborhood of a nine-win season. The D could be the biggest surprise now that inventive coordinator Clancy Pendergast is in charge. AD Pat Haden wants progress, and he should see enough to keep his coach around for another season.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: Of course. This whole hot seat thing with Kiffin is a made up controversy after the team got banged up and lost five of its last six games, however, anything fewer than eight wins will mean problems. When you’re the USC coach and you lose to UCLA and Notre Dame, there are problems, and you can’t come up with a lifeless effort like the pathetic performance against Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. However, the 2011 team wasn’t quite as good as it got credit for, and the 2012 squad wasn’t as awful as everyone made it out to be. No, the Trojans aren’t going to be national title good, but they’re talented enough to hang around in the Pac-12 South title chase. First, a quarterback has to emerge and shine, and it would be nice if Marqise Lee could stay in one piece. More than anything else, the defensive front seven has to be able to stay healthy and it has to be able to tackle. Fortunately for Kiffin, there shouldn’t be much of a problem going 4-0 against Hawaii, Washington State, Boston College and Utah State before going to Arizona State. With no Oregon to deal with and UCLA and Stanford at home, the right breaks are there to come up with a rebound year, but beating the Bruins and/or Notre Dame is a must. Kiffin is a fantastic football coach and a phenomenal recruiter. If USC decides it’s time to move on after this season, Kiffin will be snapped up in a heartbeat.
