Key Question No.4 - Can the SEC make it eight national championships in a row?

4. Can the SEC make it eight national championships in a row?

Richard Cirminiello: Of course. In fact, failing to do so would qualify as the upset at the point. Nobody has as many bona fide contenders for Pasadena as the SEC, which is both a blessing and a curse. There’s a lot of attrition that takes place in the fall, with elite programs squaring off just about every Saturday. Still, the team that survives the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, South Carolina, LSU and Florida to win a league title deserves an automatic spot in the BCS National Championship Game. And once there, there aren’t many programs capable of keeping the SEC from copping yet another crystal football.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: Sure it can, but will there be a problem coming up with an unbeaten SEC champion to assure a spot in the BCS championship? Sorry, SECers, but if Ohio State or Michigan, Oregon or Stanford, Florida State or Clemson, Texas or Oklahoma, or any two teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, ACC or Pac-12, and don’t forget Notre Dame, finish unbeaten, and the SEC champion has a loss, the string of national title victories is over – and it’s not fair. Considering a reasonable case could be made that Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida – don’t forget that win over Florida State – South Carolina, LSU and Georgia might have been the six best teams in college football at the end of the regular season, or at least six of the top ten, the league has more than earned its stripes. I have no problem if someone from outside the SEC wins the BCS championship as long as it comes against the SEC champion. If that doesn’t happen, even if the SEC champ is 11-2 or 10-3, coming from the brutal, brutal conference it’s going to be a hard sell accepting anyone else as the national champion.
