Key Question No.3 - Can Ohio State remain unbeaten in the Urban Meyer era?

3. Can Ohio State remain unbeaten in the Urban Meyer era?

Richard Cirminiello: Other than the rookies, Meyer is the only coach in the FBS without a loss at his current school. In his Buckeye debut, he ran the table, only hitting a stop sign when NCAA sanctions prevented a postseason appearance. Year 2 of the Urban renewal comes with loads of excitement, mostly on offense, and a fair amount of concern, largely related to a rebuilding D. Ohio State is home to the Big Ten’s best offensive and defensive players, QB Braxton Miller and LB Ryan Shazier, respectively, but with trips to Evanston on Oct. 5 and Ann Arbor on Nov. 30, Meyer will fall just short of another perfect season.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: Nope, because even if Urban and the boys go 13-0, bad things are probably going to be sitting right there waiting for them in the BCS championship. Buckeye fans get SO mad when I suggest that 10-2 is the most likely pre-Big Ten championship game finish for a team that has to replace six starters on the defensive front seven and needs an okay line full of veterans to turn great. The biggest concern is the health of Braxton Miller, who’s not exactly built to get drilled 15 times a game. One big hit, and all of a sudden it’s a wing and a prayer hoping there isn’t a repeat of the overtime-winning scare against Purdue. Oh yeah, the Boilermakers. Everyone looks at the Buckeye schedule and assumes 12-0 is a mortal lock with Wisconsin having to come to Columbus and road games against Northwestern and Michigan – the two toughest games besides the Leaders showdown with Bucky – but remember, it took a dogfight to get by Cal, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Michigan, winning all six of those games by a touchdown or less. This is a very, very, very good team, and it’s going to be an unstoppable force soon once the Urbster’s special recruiting classes start to kick in, but it’s not an insult to suggest a 10-2 finish for a program still getting out of from under the cloud of NCAA sanctions.
