Key Question No. 2 - Will Alabama become the first team in the AP era to win three straight titles?

2. Will Alabama become the first team in the AP era to win three straight national titles?

Richard Cirminiello: Two down. One to go. It’s hard not to like the Tide’s chances at this point. It boasts the best coaching staff in the country and a seasoned quarterback, AJ McCarron, who commandeered those first two championships. ‘Bama has as much talent as anyone, while the culture of winning permeates through every room of the athletic department. Want more? How about the schedule? The Tide plays just two treacherous games in the regular season, with the toughest one, at Texas A&M, occurring early enough to be overcome if lost. This team won’t lose more than once before December, so you’ve got to like its chances of turning T-town into Tre-scaloosa.

FOLLOW! @PeteFiutak: No. I’m feeling more 2010 than 2011 – and roughly 120 other teams would kill to be as good as 2010 Alabama. No one is reloading faster than the Crimson Tide, but you don’t improve by losing D.J. Fluker, Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack off of that O line. The secondary is a bit of a concern with no Dee Milliner-type corner, and the backup quarterback situation is a bit sketchy. That’s nitpicking – this is still the No. 1 team in America going into the season – but last year’s team lost to Texas A&M, could’ve easily lost to LSU and very nearly dropped the SEC championship game against Georgia. Great teams come up with great wins in great moments, but the difference between an 11-1 regular season and 10-2 in the SEC is paper thin. And no, I’m not buying into the “schedule is easier” theory. Virginia Tech is good, Texas A&M is great, LSU is fantastic, Mississippi State on the road is dangerous, Ole Miss is better, and Arkansas, Tennessee and Auburn have improved. Don’t get me wrong in any way; it’s going to take something truly special on the right day for any team on the slate to get by the Tide. If I had to bet on Bama or the field, I’m taking the field.
