Never has a 35-10 victory looked so average, and spawned so many questions

If you’re a Bama fan, yes...it’s time to be a bit concerned.

That was hardly a powerhouse Virginia Tech team the Tide faced on Saturday, and yet Nick Saban’s charges couldn’t even reach the century mark rushing. Bama would finish with a paltry 96 yards on 38 carries, or 2.5 yards per carry.

The Tide has only finished below 2.5 ypc five times since Saban arrived in T-Town…all losses except vs. Auburn in 2009.

Throughout August we have remarked on the shuffling taking place across Alabama’s offensive line, with even Saban himself expressing anxiety about the unit as recently as Friday to USA Today. It’s fairly clear why.

Bama nation is already lining up the excuses and lobbying the media. “VT stacked the box” and “Nobody can run on 8”. But where then was Alabama’s senior, two time national championship winning quarterback?

With pass protection that was average at best, A.J. McCarron struggled. His statline on the night – 10/24 for 110 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. And roughly 40% of that came on a single pass.

Virginia Tech outgained the Tide 212 yards to 206, with 153 yards of those yards on the ground. However, the Tide secondary made the Hokies one dimensional, as it absolutely stymied Tech quarterback Logan Thomas, who closed out his night with only five completions on 26 attempts. As a result, Alabama finished with a comfortable 35-10 victory, with 14 points from special teams.

But on the whole, Bama’s performance Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff was hardly classic, and begat more questions than it answered.

Don’t be surprised if there’s a missing person report in Tuscaloosa come Monday, as Bama fans wonder what has happened to their dominant offense.
