Week 11 Fearless Prediction & Preview - Iowa at Purdue

Iowa (5-4) at Purdue (1-7) Nov. 9 12:00, BTN

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Iowa might have bowed out of the Big Ten title chase after getting thumped at home by Wisconsin last week, but it’s going to end up going bowling and it can still make a little bit of noise in the Legends race with Michigan and Nebraska still to play. The Hawkeyes have been good, but after losing three of the last four games, they haven’t done much to make a lot of noise outside of stomping Minnesota.

Purdue is merely looking for something positive to build off of for next year. Not only have the Boilermakers been bad, they’ve been phenomenally bad getting outscored 110-7 over the last three games and getting shut out in each of the last two weeks by Michigan State and Ohio State. There isn’t enough pop to the attack, the defense isn’t getting any help, and Darrell Hazell’s first season has been a total disaster. A win over Iowa at home wouldn’t change everything around, but it would be a nice step forward.

Why Iowa Might Win: One of Purdue’s biggest issues is the total inability to generate any sort of a running game. There are several other big issues, including a painfully inefficient passing game, but the offensive line not being able to generate a push has been a killer for an offense that can’t establish anything that works. Iowa’s secondary has been outstanding at keeping the big plays to a minimum, and the run defense is only allowing 139 yards per game.

Why Purdue Might Win: The Iowa running game isn’t working all that well. It dominated over the first half of the season, hitting the 200-yard mark in each of the first five games with nine touchdowns. In the last four games, the Hawkeyes have been shut down cold at times, failing to crank up more than 136 yards on the ground with one score. It’s not too much of a coincidence that the Hawkeyes failed to generate a rushing touchdown in the three losses in the last four games. Unfortunately …

Who To Watch Out For: Purdue got destroyed for 345 rushing yards by Ohio State and gave up 251 yards and five scores to Nebraska. Iowa’s running game hasn’t worked lately, but Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock are due to bust out. Bullock only ran for six yards on six carries against Wisconsin and has just one score on the season, while Weisman only ran for 15 yards last week and was dinged. The bruising fullback hasn’t scored a rushing touchdown in the last five games.

What Will Happen: Everything will work for Iowa. The defense will shut down the Boilermaker offense cold, while the offense will pound its way to an easy win.
