Week 11 - Mountain West Fearless Predictions and Previews

Air Force (2-7) at New Mexico (2-6) Nov. 8 9:00, ESPNU

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Enjoy it if you like running games with the nation’s No. 3 (New Mexico) and 13 (Air Force) ground games. Neither team has won a Mountain West game – Hawaii is the only other team with that distinction – but the Falcons are coming off a win over Army. New Mexico has lost three straight since hitting the layup against New Mexico State, and there’s still time to have a little fun with Fresno State and Boise State on the road. The Lobos won’t go bowling, but they’ll have a shot to ruin someone’s season.

What Will Happen: Both teams are great on the ground and neither team can stop the run. New Mexico will be more effective at home and has the slightly stronger defense, but the big key will be the physical play. The Lobos will control the clock longer.

Prediction: New Mexico 35 … Air Force 31
Line: New Mexico -3 o/u: 63.5
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 2

Hawaii (0-8) at Navy (4-4) Nov. 9 3:30, CBS Sports Network

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Can Hawaii ever catch a break? The Warriors are on an eight-game losing streak, and while there have been some decent moments and close calls, flight delays and too many rough games against decent offense have proven costly. Now the program has to go to the other side of the country to deal with a Navy team coming off a tough, hard fought loss to Notre Dame. The Midshipmen just have to win two more games to be bowling, but they’re shooting higher with the potential to run through the final four games – all winnable against South Alabama, San Jose State and Army – to close strong.

What Will Happen: Hawaii’s defense is just aggressive enough and good enough to keep Nay from running wild, but the offense isn’t holding up its end of the bargain. Hawaii makes too many mistakes and doesn’t have enough firepower to keep up.

Prediction: Navy 34 … Hawaii 16
Line: Navy -17.5 o/u: 53
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 2

Nevada (3-6) at Colorado State (4-5) Nov. 9 3:30, CampusInsiders.com

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Just when it seemed like Colorado State was going to become a big player in the Mountain West race, it couldn’t hold up in a loss to Boise State. This is still a good, sound team that has the potential to finish with a winning season, but it has to survive a Nevada team that’s desperate to come up with something positive after losing four straight. The Wolf Pack have a decent ground game, but the defense has struggled and it hasn’t done well on the road, going 0-five away from Reno. On the plus side, this is the last road game of the year.

What Will Happen: Nevada can’t stop the run; Colorado State can. The Wolf Pack will try throwing deep on a shaky Ram secondary, but it won’t be enough to overcome a horrible day from the D. Nevada is great at hanging on to the ball, but Colorado State will control the clock and the game.

Prediction: Colorado State 35 … Nevada 23
Line: Colorado State -9.5 o/u: 65.5
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 3

Utah State (5-4) at UNLV (5-4) Nov. 9 8:00, ESPNU

Why You Should Give A Hoot: UNLV had its chances against San Jose State in the second half, but it couldn’t stop the run and it couldn’t get over the hump in a tough loss. There’s still time to get a sixth win to go bowling, but it would be nice get it out of the way before going to Air Force. The Rebels have normally been mistake-free, but that wasn’t the case against the Spartans. Can they be far tighter against Utah State? The Aggies have recovered after losing starting quarterback Chuckie Keeton, dominating in wins over New Mexico and Hawaii, and with home games against Colorado State and Wyoming left, the Mountain division is still in play by winning out and getting a loss from Boise State.

What Will Happen: Last week, Jarrod Lawson ran wild for San Jose State, taking the pressure off of David Fales and the passing game. This week, Utah State should be able to operate without much of a problem with no UNLV pass rush to worry about. Too many plays are made down the field for a defense that should struggle against the occasionally dominant Utah State ground game. The Aggies will control the clock and the game.

Prediction: Utah State 34 … UNLV 23
Line: Utah State -13.5 o/u: 56.5
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 2

Fresno State (8-0) at Wyoming (4-4) Nov. 9 10:15, ESPN2

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Can the Wyoming offense be enough to derail Fresno State’s dream season? The Bulldogs have started out red hot with eight straight wins, and while there have been some rough and shaky patches, everything is on the right path to the BCS. However, Wyoming is an X factor despite losing two straight and with three losses in the last four games. The defense has gone bye-bye, but weird things happen in Laramie. With Boise State up next and Utah State down the line, Wyoming getting to six wins will be tough, but the stakes are far higher now for Fresno State.

What Will Happen: Derek Carr will go ballistic, but so will Brett Smith in one of the most fin and wild shootouts of the weekend. Fresno State is all about hitting on the big, quick plays, but it should be able to hold on to the ball as long as it wants to, and it should be able to throw at will in a wild shootout.

Prediction: Fresno State 52 … Wyoming 40
Line: Fresno State -10 o/u: 79
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 2.5

San Diego State (4-4) at San Jose State (5-3) Nov. 9 10:30, CBS Sports Network

Why You Should Give A Hoot: Fresh off a surprisingly nice win over UNLV, with the running game controlling the action more than David Fales and the passing attack, now it’s time to hope for the best and stay alive in the race for the West. The Spartans control their own destiny with Fresno State still to face with the potential for a great finish on the line if they can beat a strong Aztec squad that came within a blocked field goal of upsetting the Bulldogs. On a roll with since in four of the last five games, San Diego State is more than good enough represent the conference well, but it has to go on the road three times in the final four games with Boise State the oasis. It doesn’t get any easier, and this game will toughen the Aztecs up for a finishing kick fight to win two more games and get to a bowl.

What Will Happen: Fales was sick last week for UNLV and RB Jarrod Lawson ran wild. Rocky Long won’t let Lawson get free - the Aztec staff will have a gameplan for him. San Diego State has the high-powered offense to keep up the pace, but ball control will mean everything. San Diego State leads the conference in time of possession, and that won’t change this week.

Prediction: San Diego State 37 … San Jose State 31
Line: San Jose State -6.5 o/u: 55.5
Must See Rating: (5 The Wolf of Wall Street – 1 Ass Backwards) … 3
