Which teams had the best seasons and who deserves to be ranked where? Forgetting the opinion side of the equation, here's our annual ranking of the teams based on the CFN Season Ranking Formula.

CFN 2013 Final Rankings

No. 76 to No. 100

CFN 2013 Final Season Rankings | The Top Ten
11 to 25 | 26 to 50 | 51 to 75 | 76 to 100 | Bottom 25

2013 Rankings By Conference AAC | ACC | Big 12 | Big Ten
C-USA | Independents | MAC | M-West | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

The Formula's Components:
1. Wins. - If you win, everything else falls into place. Each win counts as 1.
2. Quality Wins - The number of wins over teams that finished with a winning record. Each win counts as 1.
3. Elite Wins - The number of wins over teams that finished with two losses or fewer. Each win counts as 1 with a road win over an Elite team getting an extra 0.5. Also counting as 1 is a road win over a team that finished with three losses or fewer (but the extra 0.5 isn't added). A win over a team that finishes with three losses in a bowl game counts as one.
4. Bad Loss - The number of losses to teams that finished with three wins or fewer or a loss to a FCS (DI-AA) team. Each loss counts as minus-1. Take away an additional 0.5 for a Bad Loss at home.
5. Bad Win - The number of wins to teams that finished with three wins or fewer, or a win over a D-IAA team. Each win counts as minus 0.25.
6. Elite Loss - The number of losses to teams that finished with two losses or fewer. Each loss counts as 0.25.
7. Point Differential - Points for minus points against divided by 100.
8. Winning Percentage - To take losses into account, winning percentage is in the mix. Total wins is the tie-breaker followed by winning percentage.

Remember, these rankings are based on how good the seasons were overall, and NOT based on how good the team might have been.

100. Tulsa (3-9)
2013 CFN Season Score: 1.71
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 73
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 25

The perennial Conference USA power is going off to the American on a down note. A year after beating UCF for the conference title, the Golden Hurricane couldn’t find any consistency with the only bright spot an early win over a good Colorado State team. There were close losses to Rice and Tulane, but for the most part, the offense couldn’t keep up with the problems on defense. Tulsa scored 233 fewer points than it did in 2012.

99. Virginia (2-10)
2013 CFN Season Score: 1.80
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 56
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 79

Everything seemed right on track for this to be one of the up-and-coming teams in the ACC with a win over BYU to open things up, and the blasting from Oregon didn’t seem like that big a deal after a 2-1 start, but nothing went right the rest of the way with nine straight losses to close out the year. Not only did the Cavaliers keep losing; they kept losing big. The 27-26 loss to Maryland was he only defeat by fewer than ten points.

98. West Virginia (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 1.99
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 52
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 59

In hindsight, the 30-21 win over Oklahoma State was one of the biggest shockers of the 2013 season, losing six of the final seven games of the Big 12 season with the only win coming against TCU. The big problem? The Geno Smith-less offense scored 197 fewer points and the defense didn’t make a massive enough improvement to help out. The season ranking went into the tank after bad losses to Kansas and Iowa State to close out the regular season. The Mountaineers are 5-14 in their last 19 games against FBS teams.

97. NC State (3-9)
2013 CFN Season Score: 2.62
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 50
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 60

Was going to three straight bowl games under Tom O’Brien really that bad? Dave Doeren’s first season was supposed to be a little bit of a fight, but this was a stunner. Injuries were a problem, but the lack of offense turned out to be the real problem after a 3-1 star and a good fight in a loss to Clemson. The Wolfpack closed the season with eight straight defeats with only the 27-19 loss to North Carolina by fewer than ten points.

96. Nevada (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.18
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 79
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 82

The Wolf Pack was supposed to slip a bit in the first year after the Chris Ault era, but after a 3-2 start – with two forgivable losses to UCLA and Florida State, everything went downhill dropping six of the final seven. The win over San Jose State all but ruined the Spartans’ season, but the Pack couldn’t keep the momentum going with a season-ending loss to BYU. Three of the losses were by six points or fewer, but the schedule was just too tough with Fresno State, Boise State and San Diego State to deal with in Mountain West play.

95. Arkansas (3-9)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.29
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 46
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 88

Bret Bielema stepped in and led the Hogs to a 3-0 start including a 20-point win over a good Louisiana-Lafayette team. It looked like it was going to be 4-0 with a commanding lead against Rutgers, but a gag loss sparked a nine-game losing streak to finish up the year. The offense sputtered, the defense struggled, and it things got worse and worse until a spark at the end. There’s hope – Bielema came close to getting his first SEC win in the finale against LSU, and the team battled hard in losses to Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Auburn was held to 35 points in early November.

94. Colorado (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.54
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 77
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 122

If 4-8 can be seen as a positive, Mike McIntyre’s team came up with a three-win improvement starting out 2-0 highlighted by a win over Colorado State. Two FCS wins over Central Arkansas and Charleston Southern helped the record, and getting to face a miserable Cal team helped, but it was still a rocky year. Three of the four victories were bad wins, but the Buffs beat who they were supposed to.

93. SMU (5-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.63
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 97
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 66

The five wins should’ve accounted for something, right? All five were bad wins, coming against five teams that finished with three losses or fewer. The offense didn’t exactly explode like a June Jones attack should, closing out with 29 points in the final three games. Injuries were part of the problem, but the horrible weather in the season finale against UCF – against a team that clinched the BCS berth - was a positive break to keep the score low in a 17-13 Knight win. Even so, SMU scored 25 points or fewer in seven games, and while the D overcame a miserable start, it wasn’t good enough.

92. Wyoming (5-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.77
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 97
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 66

Dave Christensen couldn’t get the job done, but he was close, losing five of the last six games to miss out on a bowl game and lose out on his job. The offense was exciting and fun, but all four FBS wins came over teams that finished with three wins or fewer and the fifth was against Northern Colorado. The 50/50 toss-up games against Texas State and San Jose State all went the wrong way, and the 35-7 loss to Utah State to close out the regular season made it three games in the final four with ten points or fewer.

91. Florida (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 3.81
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 10
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 6

Easily the biggest disaster of the 2013 season, the Gators finished last year within a heartbeat of playing for the national title, but a horrific array of injuries were too much to overcome after starting out 4-1 and giving away that one loss to Miami. Will Muschamp’s job is now on the line after losing seven straight to close things out, hitting rock bottom with a home loss to Georgia Southern. However, the losses to Georgia and South Carolina were by a total of eight points, and the D kept the season alive at times, but the depleted offense couldn’t do anything big when needed.

90. TCU (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.06
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 20
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 46

It’s been a rough ride for the Horned Frogs since joining the Big 12, and losing five of the final six games didn’t help with a win over a horrible Iowa State team the lone bright spot. Three of the four victories were bad wins, with only the 48-17 blasting of SMU coming against a team that finished with more than three wins. The last three losses were all by three points each, including battles with Kansas State and Baylor, to go along with a 20-17 loss to Oklahoma earlier in the season. Throw in games TCU was in until late against LSU and Texas Tech, and nothing went right.

89. Kent State (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.09
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 86
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 26

After an epic 2012 season that almost concluded with a BCS berth, reality hit hard in Paul Haynes’ first season. The year, though was saved by wins over Miami University and Ohio to close out the season – the victory over the Bobcats was the biggest key to keeping the ranking from sinking into the abyss. The three wins came against Liberty, Western Michigan and MU – ugh. However, only the 16-7 loss to Akron came against a team that finished with a losing record.

T87. Wake Forest (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.39
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 59
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 85

The Demon Deacons just couldn’t generate any offense, scoring a mere 220 points on the year putting up more than 21 just four times – it just so happened to be the four times they won, with the lone positive a victory over Maryland. There wasn’t a cheap loss on the lot in the finishing kick, but a 21-19 loss to ULM in September turned out to be a problem. Three of the four wins were against the dregs, and while the defense did its part, the offense just couldn’t come through.

T87. Illinois (4-8)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.39
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 60
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 111

The O worked, the D didn’t. 3-1 start with a 45-17 win over Cincinnati made it seem like this was going to be a stunning second season under Tim Beckman, but the defense couldn’t stop anyone but Purdue the rest of the way. There were close call losses to Penn State and Northwestern, but for the most part, the Illini suffered big loss after big loss. Six of the eight defeats were blowouts.

86. Rutgers (6-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.79
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 48
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 40

The Scarlet Knights are going off to the Big Ten on a down note, losing four of their final five games and six of their last eight after a 3-1 start with the loss coming in a 52-51 thriller against Fresno State. Five of the six wins were against bad teams – teams that finished with three losses or fewer, or an FCS team, Norfolk State – and the loss to a bad UConn team was awful for the ranking. The O put up 17 points or fewer in six of the final seven losses.

85. Central Michigan (6-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 4.86
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 94
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 72

The Chippewas won five of their final seven games, and while the victory over Ohio was the only one on the slate against an FBS team that won more than two games. The offense might have been mediocre until late, and the defense might have been rocky against any team that could field an offense, it was still a six-win season – beating the bad teams is part of life in the MAC.

84. Texas State (6-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 5.09
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 110
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 93

A quirky team, the Bobcats didn’t show off much offense, but they did enough to beat some awful teams – and get by Wyoming and South Alabama – to get up to six wins. For a program trying to find its footing, that’s not bad, no matter what. While Dennis Franchione’s team missed out on a bowl game, and closing out with three straight losses was a major disappointment, it was still a better season than expected.

83. Akron (5-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 5.09
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 110
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 93

All things considered, it was a better season than the Zips could’ve reasonably asked for. Losing to Northern Illinois and UCF wasn’t any big deal, and closing out with four wins in the final five games was great, beating Toledo and Kent State along the way. It took a miracle for Michigan to escape a massive upset at home, and Louisiana-Lafayette was pushed in a 35-30 Zip loss. Three losses came by seven points or fewer, and while the offense was never consistent, and it scored more than 24 points just three times, 5-7 under Terry Bowden is a plus.

82. Troy (6-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 5.53
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 95
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 87

The biggest disappointment was missing out on a bowl game after finishing with six wins. Granted, there were some bad wins over UAB, Georgia State and Savannah State on the slate, but the Trojans and their effective passing game came up with big wins over South Alabama and WKU, too. The offense couldn’t save a defense that struggled in losses to ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette, but overall it was a good year after a few bad ones for the former Sun Belt powerhouse.

81. Northwestern (5-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 6.06
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 31
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 27

This hardly worked out according to plan after one of the greatest years in school history. After a 4-0 start, the Wildcats had everything going their way with Gameday in town and with Ohio State struggling. One loss snowballed into loss after loss in a seven-game losing streak before closing out with a meaningless win over Illinois. The Wildcats just couldn’t catch a break with losses in almost every conceivable way, marked by all-timer late collapses against Michigan and Nebraska.

80. ULM (6-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 6.55
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 84
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 63

It wasn’t as good a year as 2012, and there were some ugly blowout losses – with all six losses coming by 17 points or more – but six wins is still isn’t bad for the program that had to face Oklahoma and Baylor. Beating Wake Forest chalked up a victory over a BCS program, and there wasn’t a loss to anyone who finished with a losing record. Of course, closing out with a rivalry win over Louisiana-Lafayette was nice no matter what – making up for the lack of a bowl invite.

79. Florida Atlantic (6-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 7.00
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 119
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 109

For good and bad, the Owls were among the biggest surprises of the season, losing head coach Carl Pelini to a strange scandal, but picking up after Brain Wright took over. He’ll have to give way to Charlie Partridge going on, and he’ll stay on the coaching staff after his team closes out with four straight wins including a season-definer over Tulane. Five of the six wins came against teams that won two games or fewer. The D allowed a total of 23 points in the final three games.

78. Colorado State (8-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 7.47
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 103
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 105

Helped by a miraculous win over Washington State in the New Mexico Bowl, the Rams put a capper on a wild season with lots of Kapri Bibbs stats and plenty of offense. The losses to Colorado and Tulsa to open up the season could’ve set a bad tone, but there weren’t any cheap defeats the rest of the way. Five of the eight wins were against bad teams, but no matter how it worked out, winning six of the final eight games was a plus.

77. UNLV (7-6)
2013 CFN Season Score: 7.54
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 93
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 120

Just when it seemed like there was no hope of pulling up out of the nosedive, head coach Bobby Hauck came up with a whale of a season with a 4-2 start and a 45-19 blasting of San Diego State to earn a bowl bid. The blowout loss to North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl might have closed things out on a down note, and most of the wins were against the mediocre, but for a program that hasn’t known much success, getting to a bowl for the first time since 2000 was a plus no matter what.

76. Indiana (5-7)
2013 CFN Season Score: 7.62
2013 CFN Preview Preseason Ranking: 53
2012 CFN Season Ranking: 95

The Hoosiers beat Penn State, but they were never quite able to make up for the lack of a decent defense that gave up 35 points or more ten times. The offense was fantastic, playing back and forth with Michigan, Minnesota and Navy in wild shootouts, but they were all losses. Having to play Missouri, Michigan State and Ohio State didn’t help, and the 42-10 win over Bowling Green turned out to be the best one on the slate, but there were signs of improvement under Kevin Wilson.
