2014 Preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year

QB Bryce Petty, Sr. Baylor

With great poise and field vision, he’s able to not only hit the open target, but also get the ball to his man in a position to do something with it on the move. No, he doesn’t have RG3’s magic, but he has an accurate deep arm and was every bit as effective with 10 games with 300+ yards, a 430-yard day against Kansas, and good accuracy and off-the-charts efficiency. The spotlight is on to be brilliant again week in and week out, and he has the talent to do it with the potential to put up the stats to make him the school’s second Heisman-winner in four years.

2014 Preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year

DE Ryan Mueller, Sr. Kansas State

He didn’t exactly come from out of leftfield, but the former walk-on went from being a try-hard, high-motor part of the rotation to an All-America-caliber pass rusher with a fantastic first step and great closing ability. At 6-2 and 245 pounds he’s not all that big, and he’s not the best of athletes, but he’s relentless as well as consistent. He did his best work against the passing teams – getting a combined five sacks against Baylor and Texas Tech – but he also came up with key plays when he wasn’t hitting the quarterback with four forced fumbles and six broken up passes.
