Colorado State RB Kyle Bell Out for the Year

Posted Aug 30, 2006

FORT COLLINS - Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick said today that running back Kyle Bell will miss the entire 2006 season due to a right knee suffered during Tuesday's practice session.

"Certainly I feel bad for our football team," said Lubick, "but more importantly, I feel bad for Kyle. He's not only a good player, but a great kid. He's one of those special kids that does everything you ask of him, is a great team player and a great leader."

Bell is a 6-foot-2, 226-pound junior from Keenesburg, Colo., who gained 1,222 yards and scored touchdowns last year. Bell ranked second in the Mountain West Conference in rushing last season.

Lubick said Bell was examined Wednesday morning and the medical evaluation reflected a torn anterior cruciate injury.

"The bottom line is that it is a blow to our football team, but it's a lot more of a blow to Kyle Bell. He is really a special young man. Kyle was one of those guys who never missed a workout - either running or lifting - since he got on campus. He is a coach's dream.

"He'll get through this, but I'll miss coaching him. The players will miss him as the type of leader that he is."

Lubick said he told the team of the injury during the Rams' regular pre-practice gathering.

"I spoke to the team. They were sad and upset."

Lubick said Sophmore Gartrell Johnson, who played last year as a reserve, will move into the starting lineup with Michael Myers as his backup.

"Some guys have to step up. I believe they will," Lubick said. "I really believe people will rally."

Bell is the second projected starter to be felled by a left knee injury during preseason workouts. Cornerback Brandon Cathy was injured earlier and is lost for the season. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming weeks.

Bell will be replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt sophomore Gartrell Johnson. Sophomore Michael Myers will move into the backup role.

This is Bell's third season of collegiate competition. He will use a redshirt year in 2006 and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
