SEC Game of
the Week
Alabama 25 ... Hawaii 17
Alabama survived a late scare as
Hawaii's comeback attempt was halted by
a Lionel Mitchell interception in the
end zone with no time left on the clock.
After a rough first half, Hawaii and QB
Colt Brennan got red-hot throwing two
touchdown passes including a 31-yard
strike to Ryan Grice-Mullen to put the
pressure on the Tide. Alabama had a
nightmare of a time running the ball,
but QB John Parker Wilson had a great
first game throwing a touchdown pass to
Keith Brown. Leigh Tiffin kicked three
field goals for the Tide.
SEC
Player of
the Week
Tennessee WR Robert Meachem caught five
passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns
in the 35-18 win over Cal.

Conference Roundup
Alabama
… Give the Alabama defense credit for
withstanding the storm that is the
Hawaii passing game, but this game has
to scare Tide fans. The offense never
got the running game going while the
defense struggled to come up with a big
play in the second half until the
game-sealing interception on the final
play. On the plus side, QB John Parker
Wilson was solid showing a good deep
arm. This was a team that needed a week
to shake off the rust, so it'll be
interesting to see how sharp it is
against Vanderbilt next week.
Arkansas … Arkansas has to
immediately put this loss to USC out of
sight and out of mind. USC is still one
of the three best teams in the nation,
if not number one overall. As long as
the turnovers stop and if there can be
more consistency at quarterback, there
shouldn't be any problems over the next
two weeks against Utah State and at
Vanderbilt. However, things can quickly
be torn apart if the quarterback
situation isn't settled. Robert Johnson
was mediocre against the speedy Trojan
D, and although Mitch Mustain went
against the backups, he showed enough to
suggest that the offense might sink or
swim with him.
Auburn … You know you're good
when you beat up a decent team like
Washington State on a day when not
everything is quite clicking right. The
40-14 final score could've easily have
been 60-14 if the offense could've
converted on a few third downs in the
first half. The defense did a great job
of getting to Wazzu QB Alex Brink early
and effectively taking him out of the
game. Against Mississippi State next
week, any pressure on the quarterback
will result in major mistakes. On the
flip side, the Auburn line has to a
better job in pass protection after
allowing four sacks.
Florida … Florida ended up
coasting to the win over Southern Miss,
but there were some disturbing signs in
the blowout. The running game continues
to be ineffective and non-existent after
an awful 2005, the offensive line still
isn't productive, and the defense gave
up too many yards to a mediocre offense.
Yeah, the interior was without starting
tackles Marcus Thomas and Steven Harris,
but there should've been more pressure
and at least one sack. The UCF game next
week had better tune everything up or
else there will be big issues against
Tennessee.
Georgia … Considering this was an
easy blowout win over Western Kentucky,
the offense wasn't lights out with the
line far from consistent. Joe
Tereshinski was fine, but he wasn't
anything special. With Matthew Stafford
and Joe Cox playing well, the
quarterback controversy is far from
settled going into the showdown at South
Carolina and Tereshinski will certainly
be looking over his shoulder if he
struggles early on.
Kentucky … Kentucky got several
big plays against Louisville, but it
just wasn't consistent enough on offense
to keep the Cardinal offense off the
field. Louisville has the type of
offense that can blow up anyone, so UK
has to put this game out of mind and get
things working against Texas State. If
the Cats can beat Ole Miss in two weeks,
all will quickly be forgotten. To do
that, UK has to average more than 1.2
yards per carry.
LSU … The lack of a running game
in the first half against UL Lafayette
was a bit disturbing, but things started
to kick in after Alley Broussard started
to do his thing. JaMarcus Russell looked
in midseason form as he and the
quarterbacks averaged a whopping 13
yards per pass attempt. Things get
progressively harder playing Arizona
next week before the showdown at Auburn,
but this was a good scrimmage to get
several backups some meaningful work.
Ole Miss … Was that really a
living, breathing offense with a (gasp!)
running game? Ole Miss fans have to be
giddy after sitting through last year's
inept attack. The mobility of Brent
Schaeffer and the workhorse talents of
BenJarvus Green-Ellis make Ole Miss a
wild card in the SEC race. No, this
isn't a title team, but it showed
against Memphis that things have changed
and it'll be more competitive against
the bigger boys. Now the defense has to
start playing a big better after
allowing 374 yards of total Tiger
offense.
Miss State … It's only one game
against a very good South Carolina
defense, but the MSU offense didn't show
any improvement over last year's
disaster with the biggest problems
coming on the offensive line. With
starting quarterback Michael Henig
breaking his collarbone, it's up to Tray
Rutland to try to get something going
next week at Auburn. It might not be a
step back for the attack with Rutland
not appearing to be ready for prime
time, but it might mean a big step
forward in the team's overall
development. There's nothing wrong with
the defense; it took a trick play for
the Gamecocks to get into the end zone.
South Carolina … The win over
Mississippi State was better than it
might appear on paper. The Bulldog
defense was fantastic carrying an inept
offense, but the South Carolina attack
was just functional enough to get the
job done. QB Blake Mitchell getting
knocked out for a little while was a
blessing in disguise since it allowed
freshman Chris Smelley to see some
meaningful work. To beat Georgia next
week, the line has to provide more of a
push for the running game.
Tennessee … All questions about
whether or not David Cutcliffe could
help make Eirk Ainge a consistent, big
play quarterback have been answered. The
Vol receiving corps showed off its
talent against Cal with Robert Meachem
and Jayson Swain coming up with
jaw-dropping touchdowns, and the defense
stoned the Cal running game cold. Cal is
a fast, talented team, and Tennessee
looked like it was going twice as fast.
This was a fantastic win that should
give the program its mojo back, but it
has to build on this with the Florida
showdown coming in two weeks.
Vanderbilt … The team never gave
up against Michigan and kept battling,
but it never made enough big plays and
didn't come through with anything on
offense in the second half. Chris
Nickson certainly wasn't Jay Cutler in
his first game as a starter, but he did
show off a little bit of mobility and
was the only rushing threat the team
had. To stay with Alabama next week, the
offensive line has to play better and
has to give the backs more room to move.
