Big Ten
Player
of the Year
Troy Smith, QB Ohio State
Is there any possible debate? This was a
great year for individual players in the
Big Ten with Michigan's Mike Hart and
Wisconsin's P.J. Hill among the nation's
best running backs, Michigan's LaMarr
Woodley and Alan Branch among the
nation's best defensive linemen,
Michigan's Leon Hall one of the best
corners around, and Wisconsin's Joe
Thomas the best offensive tackle in
college football. Smith was the best
player in the nation this season and was
unflappable all throughout the Big Ten
campaign.
Defensive
Player of the Year -
Ohio State DT Quinn Pitcock
While Michigan DE LaMarr Woodley
certainly deserved consideration as the
top defensive player in the Big Ten, he
was held in relative check late in the
year while Pitcock was a bit steadier.
He wasn't just a rock of a defensive
tackle, he was also a strong interior
pass rusher. Even though the stats might
not be as flashy as Woodley's or Purdue
DE Anthony Spencer's, Pitcock was the
better player this year.
