2006 North Carolina State Wolfpack Season, Game Recaps and Reviews
Nov. 25
East Carolina 21 ... NC State 16
East Carolina overcame a 10-7 deficit with a 53-yard Aundrae
Allison touchdown catch with four seconds left in the first half,
and put it away in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard Brandon Fractious
scoring run. The Wolfpack got two, two-yard touchdown runs, but the
offense sputtered throughout. ECU answered a two-yard Toney Baker
touchdown run with a 12-play, 84-yard drive finished with a two-yard
Jay Sonnhalter touchdown catch, and then the defense did the rest. Player of
the game ... East Carolina RB
Brandon Fractious ran 17 times for 92 yards and a touchdown Stat Leaders: NC State- Passing: Daniel Evans,
17-27, 186 yds Rushing: Toney Baker, 13-52, 1 TD Receiving:
Anthony Hill, 4-47 East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 14-29,
220 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 17-92, 1 TD Receiving:
Aundrae Allison, 3-72, 1 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Where did
the offense go? Over the seven game losing streak to close out the
year, the attack wasn't creative and there wasn't nearly enough of a
running game to help out the struggling Daniel Evans. If Chuck
Amato's job wasn't in danger before, now it's in huge trouble. To
get the attack moving was like pulling teeth, and while the defense
did its best to keep the Pack in games, it couldn't carry the team.
Remember, this is a young team that had to take its lumps, but
there's still a question whether or not it can jell into anything
special unless the line is great from day one next year.
Nov. 18
North Carolina 23 ... NC State 9
North Carolina came up with four turnovers and got a fumble
recovery for a score late in the fourth to seal the win. Connor
Barth nailed field goals from 20, 54 and 37 yards out, while Ronny
McGill ran for 101 yards and a one-yard first quarter touchdown. NC
State only managed three John Delaney field goals and blew drive
after drive with mistakes. Kareen Taylor picked off two passes and
broke up three passes. Player of
the game ... North Carolina
RB Ronnie McGill ran 26 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. Stat Leaders: NC State- Passing: Daniel Evans,
22-41, 261 yds, 3 INTs Rushing: Toney Baker, 15-68 Receiving: Anthony Hill,
7-84 North Carolina - Passing: Joe Dailey, 8-15, 137
yds
Rushing: Ronnie McGill, 26-101, 1 TD Receiving:
Barrington Edwards, 3-36 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... At this
point in the year, NC State should be sharper, not worse. Turnovers,
penalties, and the inability to finish off drives with touchdowns
meant a bad North Carolina team could hang around and come up with
the win. The running game should've been far more effective against
the porous Tar Heel defensive front, while Daniel Evans was shaky
for yet another week. The East Carolina game had better show that
the team has the potential to be a lot better or else the heat will
will be turned into a blast furnace for Chuck Amato.
Nov. 11
Clemson 20 ... NC State 14
C.J. Spiller ran for a 52-yard
touchdown and Jad Dean hit two fourth quarter field goals, but
Clemson had to hold on. NC State had its chances late, but a Daniel
Evans pass was tipped and intercepted by Nick Watkins to snuff out
one drive, and the final shot was stopped after a pass to Lamart
Barrett in the end zone was ruled out of bounds. On the last play,
Evans was sacked to preserve Clemson's win. The Wolfpack got all its
points in the third quarter on a one-yard Toney Baker run and a
34-yard interception return for a score from Willie Baker. Player of the game ... Clemson RB C.J. Spiller ran 18
times for 154 yards and a touchdown Stat Leaders: Clemson- Passing: Will
Proctor, 15-24, 146 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT Rushing: C.J. Spiller, 18-154, 1 TD Receiving:
Chansi Stuckey, 5-72 NC State - Passing:
Daniel Evans, 10-24, 95 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Toney Baker, 34-174, 1 TD. Receiving: John
Dunlap, 3-42 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... It seems
like eons ago since NC State was the hot ACC team with wins over
Boston College and Florida State. Since then, Chuck Amato's team has
lost five-straight to get knocked out of bowl eligibility and on the
verge of a complete disaster if it loses to North Carolina and/or
East Carolina. Toney Baker ran extremely well, but there wasn't
nearly enough from the passing game to get by a good team like
Clemson. There simply isn't enough consistent offense early in the
games, and the comebacks keep falling short. On the plus side, the
offense is close with Daniel Evans making things close every week.
Nov. 4
Georgia Tech 31 ... NC State 23
Georgia Tech got a 26-yard Travis Bell field goal and a
seven-yard James Johnson touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to
take the lead on NC State and stay there. The Wolfpack offense only
managed three John Deraney field goals, but the defense got a
28-yard interception return for a score from Pat Lowery and the
special teams came up with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score from
Darrell Blackman on the opening kickoff of the second half. Reggie
Ball threw four touchdown passes including two to Calvin Johnson in
the first quarter and two to James Johnson. Player of the game ... Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson
caught nine passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns Stat Leaders: NC State - Passing: Daniel
Evans, 21-53, 270 yds Rushing: Andre Brown, 9-19. Receiving:
Anthony Hill, 6-72 Georgia Tech - Passing: Reggie Ball,
13-35, 215 yds, 4 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Tashard Choice, 34-164, 1 TD. Receiving:
Calvin Johnson, 9-168, 2 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Another
week, another close loss in the fourth quarter. Now that the season
is one loss from completely slipping away, the team needs to find
some way, some how to tighten up late. The D couldn't stop two late
Georgia Tech drives, while the offense couldn't generate anything in
the second half. To not get an offensive touchdown and settling for
field goals is a problem against a team like Georgia Tech. The run
defense couldn't handle Tashard Choice, and it should have a
nightmare of a time against Clemson's ground game next week.
Oct. 28
Virginia 14 ... NC State 7
Jason Snelling tore off a 17-yard
touchdown run with 1:31 to play and Tony Franklin snuffed out the
final NC State drive with an interception to seal the win. Snelling
started off the scoring with a one-yard run in the first quarter,
and there wasn't any scoring until John Dunlap caught an eight-yard
scoring pass to tie it. NC State outgained Virginia 290 yards to
256. Player of the game ... Virginia RB Jason Snelling ran
20 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for
31 yards Stat Leaders: NC State- Passing: Daniel
Evans, 21-35, 220 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Rushing: Andre Brown, 12-41 Receiving:
Anthony Hill, 6-41 Virginia - Passing: Jameel Sewell, 12-22,
131 yds
Rushing: Jason Snelling, 20-99, 2 TD. Receiving:
Kevin Ogletree, 4-56 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Daniel
Evans might be a gamer, but as the Virginia game proved, the NC State
offense needs a running game for things to work well. Evans is too
inexperienced and not efficient enough to carry the offense by
himself. Now that all momentum is lost from the wins over BC and
Florida State, the team has to come up with a win in a big hurry or
the bowl hopes are lost. A split against Georgia Tech and Clemson is
a must, but few teams play better when its back is against the wall.
Oct. 21
Maryland
26 ... NC State 20
Maryland was helped by three NC
State turnovers on the way to a 20-0 lead with a four-yard Josh
Allen touchdown catch and a two-yard run from Lance Ball. NC State
was able to get back into it with short touchdown runs from Andre
Brown and Toney Baker along with a 65-yard punt return for a score
from Darrell Blackman, but Maryland recovered the onside kick after
the Baker score and finally put it away. Dan Ennis nailed four field
goals for the Terps. Player of the game ... Maryland LB Wesley Jefferson
made 13 tackles and came up with a quarterback hurry Stat Leaders: Maryland- Passing: Sam
Hollenbach, 7-9, 115 yds, 1 TD Rushing: Lance Ball, 17-77, 1 TD Receiving:
Keon Lattimore, 3-72 NC State - Passing:
Daniel Evans, 15-26, 145 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Toney Baker, 29-95, 1 TD. Receiving: John
Dunlap, 4-43 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... And
now NC State is officially back to earth. The turnovers against
Maryland proved to be too costly, while there wasn't enough pop on
offense until it was too late. Daniel Evans is proving to be
fantastic late in games, and now he has to prove he can make plays
from the start. When you live by comebacks, sometimes things don't
work out. Toney Baker and the running game worked well, and now
there has to be even more production to take the heat off Evans over
a tough upcoming stretch at Virginia, against Georgia Tech, and at
Clemson.
Oct. 14
Wake Forest 25 ... NC State 23
Wake Forest got three field goals from Sam Swank from over 50
yards out and a 57-yard touchdown pass to Nate Morton. The defense
had to hold on as NC State came back in the fourth quarter with a
27-yard field goal from John Deraney and a 13-yard scoring run from
Toney Baker, but a final drive into Wake Forest territory was wiped
out by an interception by Josh Gattis. Baker and Andre Brown ran for
short scores in the second quarter.
Player of the
game ... Wake Forest PK Sam Swank hit three field goals from 51,
53 and 53 yards and doinked a 49 yarder off the upright Stat Leaders: NC State- Passing: Daniel Evans,
21-37, 200 yds, 1 INT Rushing: Toney Baker, 13-57, 2 TD Receiving:
Lamart Barrett, 5-47 Wake Forest - Passing: Riley Skinner, 9-14, 124
yds, 1 TD Rushing: Kevin Harris, 22-65, 1 TD Receiving:
Zac Selmon, 2-30 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... NC State
might have lost to Wake Forest, but there's still plenty of reason
to get fired up about the team. Daniel Evans is a playmaker, even
though he's hardly consistent and didn't do enough early on.
Defensive tackle Tank Tyler looked like a big-time NFL prospect
blowing up play after play from the inside. The momentum from the
big wins over BC and Florida State is now gone, and it might be hard
to get the mojo back on the road against Maryland and Virginia,
followed up by dates with Georgia Tech and Clemson.
Oct. 5
NC State 24 ... Florida State 20
NC State's Daniel Evans connected with John Dunlap for a
12-yard score early in the fourth quarter and the defense held on
forcing a late turnover and running out the clock taking three
knees. Florida State had control of the game late up until late in
the third quarter thanks to two Drew Weatherford touchdown passes
highlighted by an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brandon Warren
after a 99-yard, 16-play drive, but the Wolfpack offense fought back
to score the final 14 points of the game. Player of the game ... NC State QB Daniel Evans
completed 13 of 22 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Stat Leaders: Florida State- Passing:
Drew Weatherford, 16-29, 249 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT Rushing: Lorenzo Booker, 14-57 Receiving:
Brandon Warren, 5-48, 1 TD NC State - Passing: Daniel Evans, 13-22,
190 yds, 3 TD
Rushing: Andre Brown, 18-113. Receiving: Gerron
James, 4-91, 1 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Daniel
Evans has stones as big as church bells. Time and again he had to
face the Florida State pressure, and time and again he came through
with big throws with his jump balls to his young receivers always
seeming to be on the mark when they needed to be. Several times, FSU
had the momentum and could've put the game away, but NC State showed
the mental toughness it didn't have early in the year. Now with two
of the tougher ACC games out of the way, and as long as the team
plays with the confidence it's shown over the last two weeks,
there's no reason it can't go on a great run against Wake Forest,
Maryland, and Virginia over the next few weeks.
Sept. 23
NC State 17 ... Boston College 15
NC State QB Daniel Evans, in his first start, didn't have a
night to remember until his final drive. Down five with 46 left and
starting on his own 28, Evans found Anthony Hill for an 18 yard
pass. He threw a 20-yard pass to John Dunlap to get to the BC 34,
and then with five seconds to play, found Dunlap in the end zone for
a touchdown. The Wolfpack were able to win on the score since BC
failed on a two-point conversion after a Brian Toal touchdown run
early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scores early in the game on
a 22-yard catch from Tony Gonzalez, but the extra point was no good.
Andre Brown ran for a 26-yard score in the third quarter for State's
touchdown before the final score. Player of the game ... NC State QB Daniel Evans
completed 15 of 31 passes for 179 yards and an interception and
threw the game-winning touchdown pass with five seconds to play Stat Leaders: Boston College- Passing:
Matt Ryan, 13-25, 149 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Rushing: L.V. Whitworth, 21-109 . Receiving:
Brandon Robinson, 3-23 NC State - Passing: Daniel Evans, 15-31,
179 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Andre Brown, 13-97, 1 TD. Receiving: John
Dunlap, 4-79, 1 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Daniel
Evans might not have been anything special until the final minute,
but he was special when he had to be against Boston College. While
the unbelievable ending will get all the attention, this turned out
to be the coming out part for a State defense that's had problems
all season long. While it wasn't a brick wall, it was great on third
downs and pressured BC QB Matt Ryan all game long. Now the team has
to take the momentum into the Florida State showdown. Even after a
rough start to the year, the Pack is 1-0 in ACC play and can make a
big statement next week.
Sept. 16
Southern Miss 37 ... NC State 17
Southern Miss tore through NC State for 442 yards, but it
wasn't able to put the game away until late in the third quarter on
a one-yard Jeremy Young touchdown run. Damion Fletcher ran for three
scores including two from one-yard out as part of a 24-0 run in the
second half before the Wolfpack finally got back on the board with a
21-yard touchdown catch from John Dunlap. Player of the game ... Southern Miss RB Damion Fletcher
ran 28 times for 177 yards and three touchdowns and caught three
passes for 65 yards Stat Leaders: Southern Miss- Passing:
Jeremy Young, 13-19, 181 yds Rushing: Damion Fletcher, 28-177, 3 TD . Receiving:
Shawn Nelson, 5-58 NC State - Passing: Marcus Stone, 10-24,
100 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Andre Brown, 13-48. Receiving: Donald
Bowens, 4-76, 1 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Marcus
Stone isn't getting any better. The offense needed him to make the
jump into becoming a steady D-I quarterback, and the Southern Miss
game showed that he isn't even close. The defense is having problems
stopping the run with Akron's Dennis Kennedy rumbling last week and
Damion Fletcher of Southern Miss coming up with a great game this
week. That's not a plus with Boston College and Wake Forest up soon,
but it won't matter against Florida State. To get the mojo back, the
defense has to come up with some stops and the team has to focus.
Committing ten penalties isn't a positive sign.

The defense is having problems
stopping the run with Akron's Dennis Kennedy rumbling last week and

defense has to come up with some stops and the team has to focus.
Committing ten penalties isn't a positive sign.
Sept. 9
Akron 20 ... NC State 17
Akron upset NC State on a one-yard Dennis Kennedy touchdown
run on the final play of the game to cap a wild final few minutes.
NC State appeared to overcome a shaky performance with an 11-yard
touchdown catch from Jamelle Eugene with just over a minute to play,
but Akron was able to quickly march down the field with a dive from
from QB Luke Getsy to get down to the one as time was running out.
Kennedy punched it in, but barely, on the next play to go along with
two other one-yard scoring runs. NC State got its other touchdown on
a 20-yard touchdown catch from Darrell Blackmon. Player of the game ... Akron RB Dennis Kennedy ran 30
times for 117 yards and three touchdowns and led the Zips with four
catches for 28 yards Stat Leaders: Akron- Passing: Luke Getsy,
12-31, 243 yds Rushing: Dennis Kennedy, 30-117, 3 TD . Receiving:
Dennis Kennedy, 4-28 NC State - Passing: Marcus Stone, 16-31,
209 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Toney Baker, 17-58. Receiving: Anthony
Hill, 7-82 Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
NC State's defense had a chance to put
the clamps down on Akron and close out the game after the offense
finally did its job, and it didn't happen. It's hard to win when you
commit three turnovers, nine penalties, and convert a mere three of
15 third down chances, but the Wolfpack still had a chance to
escape. However, the D allowed Akron to go 67 yards in six plays and
now the heat and pressure is really on head coach Chuck Amato. The
running game has to produce more than 81 yards against a MAC team,
even one as good as Akron, and Marcus Stone has to do a better job
of keeping the chains moving. Things might not get much better over
the next three weeks playing Southern Miss, Boston College and
Florida State.
Sept. 2
NC State 23 ... Appalachian State 10
NC State beat Appalachian State with a strong running game and
good defense holding the Mountaineer attack to 133 yards of total
offense and only six first downs. The Wolfpack passing game didn't
do much of anything with Marcus Stone only throwing for 33 yards,
but Andre Brown and Toney Baker led the way to 206 rushing yards
highlighted by a brilliant 43-yard scoring dash from Brown midway
thorough the second quarter. ASU got a one yard touchdown run from
Kevin Richardson late in the first half, but the State D turned the
heat up in the second half only allowing a 37-yard Julian Rauch
field goal. Player of the game ... NC State RB Andre Brown ran 15
times for 125 yards and a touchdown Stat Leaders: Appalachian State- Passing:
Trey Elder, 4-14, 58 yds, 1 INT Rushing: Devon Moore, 7-35 . Receiving:
William Mayfield, 3-21 NC State - Passing: Marcus Stone, 7-13,
36 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Andre Brown, 15-125, 1 TD. Receiving:
Darrell Blackman, 3-26, 1 TD Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Everyone
knew NC State could run the ball, so the game against Appalachian
State should've been when the passing game got some work in to see
if Marcus Stone could be more of a threat. 36 passing yards later,
there's a lot to worry about. The Wolfpack will live and die with
Andre Brown, Toney Baker and the ground game early on, but there's
no way this team can compete with the average to elite teams in the
ACC unless there's far more balance. The starters on the defensive
line were fine once they turned up the intensity, but there's still
plenty of room for improvement.

Further Analysis One of two things will happen with the NC State program
over the next year. 1) Beleaguered head coach Chuck Amato and his
staff will prove they can coach a little and get this team full of
great athletes and prospects to finally pull it all together, or 2)
there will be a regime change.
Spoiled by fantastic success thanks over his first four years thanks
to quarterback Phil Rivers, Amato brought in a slew of fantastic
talent, especially on defense, and went 12-11 post-Phil. The
Wolfpack had the number one defense in America in 2004 and didn't go
to a bowl, and it had the eighth best D last year thanks to Mario
Williams, Manny Lawson, and a total of five players drafted last
year. So where were all the wins?
It's possible that no one did less with
more than Amato and his staff over the last two seasons, but he has
the type of team that can quickly make amends. First things first;
this team has to beat the teams it's supposed to.
Fine, so the ACC is bigger and badder than ever, but there's no
reason a team good enough to beat Florida State in Tallahassee and
Georgia Tech in Atlanta should lose to North Carolina and Wake
Forest. There's enough speed, athleticism, and size to hang punch
for punch with anyone in the conference meaning games against the
lesser teams have to be walk-throughs.
To get that game-in-game-out consistency, it has to come from the
offense. Quarterback Marcus Stone went 5-1 over the back half of last
year, but that was all thanks to a defense that allowed an average of
9.8 points per game over the five wins. To win on the road on a regular
basis, NC State must have some semblance of an offense it can count on.
The running back tandem Andre Brown and Toney Baker is good, but it's
not good enough to lead the way to an ACC title. Stone has to use his
good receiving corps and better offensive coordinator, Marc Trestman, to
become a star. This team will go as he goes.
On defense, replacing the three first round draft picks (Williams,
Lawson and John McCargo) will get all the attention, but don't be
stunned if there's not a huge drop-off with fantastic end prospects
Willie Young and Little Wright wrapping around one of the league's best
tackle combinations in Tank Tyler and DeMario Pressley. There's warp
speed to burn in the experienced secondary, and Pat Lowery, LeRue Rumph,
James Martin, and former running back Reggie Davis should form an
excellent linebacking corps.
There might be
several key personnel losses and a subconscious attitude that last year
should've been the turn-the-corner season, but don't fall asleep on this
team. Once again, it has the talent to jump up and bit someone big, and
things should be helped immensely by ...
The
Schedule:
There's only one absolute killer on the slate, Florida State, and NC
State gets the game at home. No Virginia Tech. No Miami. The program has been flaky enough to lose
to just about anyone, and the road slate has its share of landmines
playing at Southern Miss, Maryland, Virginia, Clemson and North
Carolina. Even so, if the Wolfpack can hold serve at home, or go 6-1
with a loss to the Seminoles and big wins over Boston College and
Georgia Tech, a bowl season will be a must.
Best
Offensive Player: Senior C Leroy Harris. Had he chosen to leave
school early he would've made it seven Wolfpack players drafted and
would've been a first day selection. Able to play center or guard, the
pros will quickly find a spot for the talented 6-3, 300-pound run
blocker.
Best
Defensive Player: Senior CB A.J. Davis. With his sub-4.4 speed, he
has the potential to grow into a special college cover-corner. With his
toughness against the run, he'll attract plenty of interest from the big
league scouts if he can have a steady season as the team's number one
defensive back.
Key player
to a successful season: Redshirt freshman DE Willie Young, junior DE
Littleton Wright, and senior DE John Amanchukwu. Of course, Marcus Stone
is the key player to the season, but if he has an up and down year, then
it'll be up to the defense to try to carry the day again against a light
slate. Young, Wright and Amanchukwu have a ton of talent and upside. Not
first round talent and upside, but they might combine to come close the
25 sacks cranked out by Williams and Lawson.
The season
will be a success if ... State wins eight games. Nine would be a good goal to shoot
for, but let's allow for a Wolfpack brain-cramp against someone like
East Carolina. With the exception of missing Duke, the Wolfpack has as
favorable an ACC schedule, and a light enough non-conference slate,
to make anything less than an eight-win year cause for screaming.
Key game:
Sept. 23 vs. Boston College. Assuming the Pack can get by a road
trip to Southern Miss, it'll be 3-0 going into the start of the ACC
season facing an Eagle team that won in a 30-10 pasting last season.
With Florida State ahead, along with a back half of the season with four
road trips in five weeks, beating BC at home will be a must.
