2006 BYU Cougars Season, Game Recaps, Scores and Reviews

Dec. 21
2006 PurePioneer Las Vegas Bowl
BYU 38 ... Oregon 8

BYU embarrassed Oregon as John Beck threw for 375 yards and two touchdowns while Jonny Harline made nine grabs for 181 yards. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cougars scored 17 in the second with Curtis Brown running for his first of two scores and Harline scoring on a 41-yard grab. A Beck 14-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter made it a laugher. Oregon finally got on the board with a 48-yard Brian Paysinger touchdown catch, but BYU recovered the onside kick and scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Manase Tonga.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck completed 28 of 46 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions and ran for a score.
Stat Leaders: Oregon - Passing: Dennis Dixon, 10-20, 122 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Dennis Dixon, 10-57  Receiving:
Jordan Kent, 5-33
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 28-46, 375 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 17-120, 2 TD  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 9-181, 1 TD

Notes and Thoughts ... Where was the Oregon offense? 548 yards to 260?! 30 first downs to 14?! Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf were lousy, but to be fair, they were each plagued by dropped passes and didn't get any help from anyone else. Jonathan Stewart and the Duck running game went nowhere. While the BYU defense deserves credit, it was Oregon's fault for appearing to be unprepared to play. ... John Beck once again proved he's one of the most creative passing quarterbacks in college football. He made plays when things broke down, he didn't make mistakes, outside of one bad interception, to let Oregon get back into the game, and he ran effectively. Jonny Harline upped his NFL stock by once again showing off his great hands and route running ability. However, he's more of a big wide receiver than a true tight end. ... After the ugly TCU win over Northern Illinois and BYU's domination of Oregon, the Mountain West has started out the bowl season red-hot. Let the first two bowl games be a warning to San Jose State against New Mexico in the New Mexico Bowl and to Tulsa against Utah in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Nov. 25
BYU 33 ... Utah 31
Down 31-27 with three seconds to play on the Utah 11, BYU's John Beck dropped back, roamed around, roamed around some more, waited, waited, and waited, and finally found Jonny Harline in the end zone for his third touchdown catch of the game in one of the most thrilling finishes in the history of the rivalry. The two passing games went up and down the field with Utah overcoming an early 14-0 deficit with 24 straight points on two Brett Ratliff touchdown passes and a Eric Weddle 18-yard scoring play to Brent Casteel. The Cougars bounced back as Beck connected with Harline for a four-yard score early in the fourth and with Daniel Coats for a two-yard touchdown with 3:23 to play to take a 27-24 lead, but Utah bounced back as Ratliff connected with Brent Casteel for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:19 to play. Beck took the team 75 yards in ten plays for the win.
Player of the game ...BYU QB John Beck completed 38 of 43 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Utah - Passing: Brett Ratliff, 24-38, 358 yds, 3 TD
Rushing: Brent Casteel, 4-34  Receiving: Derreck Richards, 8-79

BYU - Passing: John Beck, 28-43, 375 yds, 4 TD
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 13-45  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 7-118, 3 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... As if John Beck didn't already come up with one of the most glorious seasons in BYU's history, his legend has been cemented with one brilliant, unforgettable play in a rivalry game beating Utah with his legs as well as his touch in the final moments.
Now up to ten wins with the Las Vegas Bowl to go, Bronco Mendenhall has truly restored the luster. Now if the defense can just get its groove back after getting ripped apart by Brett Ratliff, all will be fine.

Nov. 18
BYU 42 ... New Mexico 17
BYU sealed the Mountain West title with 653 yards of offense helped by four touchdown passes and a one-yard scoring run from John Beck highlighted by a 71-yard pass play to Jonny Harline for a 21-3 first half lead. Curtis Brown ran for a 49-yard score and caught a nine-yard touchdown pass. New Mexico cranked out 418 yards of offense and scored 14 in the third quarter with a Quincy Black 88-yard interception return for a touchdown and a Chris Nelson 35-yard catch.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck threw for 464 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions on 28-of-42 passing and added another score and seven yards on five carries.
Stat Leaders: New Mexico - Passing: Chris Nelson, 22-38, 245 yds, 1 TD, 2 INTs
Rushing: Rodney Ferguson, 20-138  Receiving: Travis Brown, 6-116, 1 TD
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 28-42, 464 yds, 4 TDs, 2 INTs
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 13-124, 1 TD  Receiving: Nathan Meikle, 6-111

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Is there a hotter team in America outside of Columbus? The Cougars keep on winning with shocking efficiency and ease with John Beck coming up with yet another brilliant performance. While he threw two interceptions, he could afford to take a few chances considering he was able to bomb away for 464 yards. BYU is getting huge plays from both sides of the ball and is stomping on teams so early that they have no chance of getting into the game. New Mexico was out of it after the first half.

Nov. 10
BYU 55 ... Wyoming 7
BYU ripped apart Wyoming with a 31-0 halftime lead and going up 55-0 before Wyoming's Devin Moore tore off a 71-yard touchdown run in the final minutes. John Beck threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more and Curtis Brown added two one-yard scores. The Cougar defense held the Cowboys to 173 yards before the garbage-time touchdown run. Beck moved past Jim McMahon for the number two spot on BYU's all-time passing list.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck completed 20 of 26 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two scores
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween, 14-27, 102 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Devin Moore, 5-93, 1 TD  Receiving: Michael Ford, 4-31
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 20-26, 310 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Curtis Brown, 22-91, 2 TD  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 6-105, 1 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... If it wasn't established before that BYU is far and away the best team in the Mountain West and better than its being given credit for nationally, it was confirmed in the destruction of Wyoming. John Beck just put another nail in the coffin on the Player of the Year honors with a brilliant game spreading the ball around well and being nearly perfect on third downs against one of the nation's top pass defenses. Now that the Cougars have clinched at least a share of the Mountain West title, it's time to start heaping more praise on head coach Bronco Mendenhall for the job he's done restoring the glory.

Nov. 4
BYU 24 ... Colorado State 3
BYU's defense came up with five sacks and held Colorado State to just 151 yards of total offense and seven first downs giving up just a 28-yard field goal. The Cougar offense got three short touchdown runs including two from Fui Vaukapuna and one from Manase Tonga, and Hared McLaughlin hit a 25-yard field goal. The Cougars held on to the ball for over 34 minutes.
Player of the game ... BYU's Cameron Jensen made nine tackles and two sacks
Stat Leaders: Colorado State - Passing: Caleb Hanie, 13-23, 125 yds
Rushing: Nnamdi Ohaeri, 13-53  Receiving: Damon Morton, 4-51
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 22-30, 290 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Curtis Brown, 16-81  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 6-59

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Everyone knows about John Beck and the BYU offense, but it's been the defense that's been dominating in Mountain West play.
The defensive front had its way with the Colorado State offensive line getting pressure all game long and coming up with seemingly every third down stop to get the Ram offense off the field. There's no beating this team if the offense isn't turning the ball over and the defense keeps playing like this. With two home games against Wyoming and New Mexico before dealing with Utah, all the team has to worry about is complacency.

Oct. 28
BYU 33 ... Air Force 14
BYU scored the first 24 points of the game on two Jon Beck touchdown passes, a six yard Fui Vakapuna touchdown run and a 53-yard Jared McLaughlin field goal. Air Force broke the run with a one-yard Shaun Carney touchdown after a 15-play, 80-yard drive, but the Cougars answered with an acrobatic four-yard catch from Vakapuna. The Cougars outgained Air Force 411 yards to 229.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck went 23-of-31 for 258 yards and three touchdowns, adding 28 yards on the ground on four carries.
Stat Leaders: BYU - Passing: John Beck, 23-31, 258 yds, 3 TDs
Rushing:
Fui Vakapuna, 12-52, 1 TD  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 4-68, 1 TD
Air Force - Passing: Jim Ollis, 2-4, 23 yds
Rushing: Jacob Kendrick, 14-58  Receiving: Victor Thompson, 2-6
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... BYU is playing better than anyone in the Mountain West right now by a long shot. John Beck all but has the conference Player of the Year honor locked up, but he's getting plenty of help from an effective running game, and enough of a defense to turn wins into laughers. It helps to get off to hot starts; BYU held the ball for over 19 minutes in the first half and put the game away in the first quarter. This is a team built for firefights, and with the running game, it can close, too.

Oct. 21
BYU 52 ... UNLV 7
BYU rolled up 574 yards of total offense with John Beck throwing three touchdown passes and running for another in the laugher. UNLV turned it over six times giving the Cougars a short field time and again, but going on long scoring marches wasn't a problem. McKay Jacobson and Jonny Harline each caught caught two touchdown passes for BYU. UNLV's only score came on a three-yard catch from Casey Flair in the second quarter.
Player of the game ... BYU RB Curtis Brown ran 20 times for 148 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 11 yards.
Stat Leaders: UNLV - Passing: Rocky Hinds, 16-32, 205 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT
Rushing: David Peeples, 13-49,   Receiving: Ryan Wolfe, 4-97
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 18-23, 250 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 20-148, 1 TD  Receiving: McKay Jacobson, 3-54, 2 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
The Cougars are on a roll as they take care of the two worst teams in the league. Now things get progressively tougher with road dates at Air Force and Colorado State followed by a nasty battle with Wyoming, but as long as the offense continues to be as balanced and effective, there won't be any problems. At the moment, BYU is clearly the class of the Mountain West. To nitpick, the 12 penalties for 114 yards were way too many

Oct. 7
BYU 47 ... San Diego State 17
BYU exploded with 40 first half points with two touchdowns from Curtis Brown and three John Beck scoring passes. San Diego State could only manage a first quarter Garrett Palmer field goal until the game was well out of reach. Beck threw his fourth touchdown pass on an 18-yard play to Manase Tonga in the third quarter, while Brandon Bornes and Tyler Campbell each ran for one-yard scores for the Aztecs.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck completed 16 of 21 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns.
Stat Leaders: San Diego State - Passing: Kevin Craft, 20-32, 216 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Atiyyeh Henderson, 21-93   Receiving: Ramal Porter, 8-70
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 16-21, 267 yds, 4 TD
Rushing:
Fui Vakapuna, 4-56, 1 TD  Receiving:
Curtis Brown, 4-33, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU is doing a great job of jumping on team's necks early. It didn't let San Diego State breathe with a stunningly efficient mix of plays, while the defense never let the Aztec offense get settled early on. This is a solid, veteran team led by John Beck, who's starting to hit his stride as the Mountain West's best player. As long as the offense can have some balance, and Beck can keep taking advantage of every opportunity, 10-2 is very possible.

Sept. 28
BYU 31 ... TCU 17
BYU jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never fell behind with three John Beck touchdown passes and a one-handed four-yard scoring grab from Jonny Harline to put things well out of reach midway through the fourth quarter. TCU didn't get into the end zone until the third quarter capping off an 80-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown catch from Brent Hecht to get within seven, but the Cougars owned the first half of the fourth with two of Beck's touchdown throws. The loss stopped TCU's 13-game winning streak, which was the longest in the nation.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck completed 23 of 37 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns.
Stat Leaders: TCU - Passing: Jeff Ballard, 26-40, 296, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Jeff Ballard, 12-63   Receiving: Donald Massey, 8-85
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 23-37, 321 yds, 3 TD
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 16-56  Receiving:
Curtis Brown, 5-58
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU got the win it needed to have to officially become the lead dog in the Mountain West race with a fantastic performance against TCU. Now things should be interesting with six winnable games before the season-ending rivalry battle at Utah. John Beck wasn't mobile thanks to a banged up ankle, but he did a great job of getting rid of the ball and kept the offense moving against a defense that shut down Texas Tech a few weeks ago. To nitpick, the defense gave up too many yards and had a hard time against the run. Who cares? This is the biggest win yet, by far, in the Bronco Mendenhall era.

Sept. 23
BYU 38 ... Utah State 0
BYU had few problems getting out to a 24-0 lead on four possessions thanks to three Fui Vakapuna field goals, and then coasted in the second half as Justin Robinson rook an interception 64 yards for a touchdown  and Jonny Harline caught an 18-yard touchdown pass. Utah State cranked out 242 yards of total offense and 17 touchdowns, but failed on its two scoring chances highlighted by a blocked field goal attempt from 33 yards out.
Player of the game ... BYU RB Fui Vakapuna ran for 73 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries.
Stat Leaders: Utah State - Passing: Leon Jackson, 14-24, 90 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Marcus Cross, 27-127 Receiving: Marcus Cross, 5-38
BYU - Passing: Jason Beck, 20-28, 305 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Fui Vakapuna, 13-73, 3 TDs  Receiving: Jonny Harline, 5-75

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU did what it was supposed to do with a team like Utah State and put it away right away. After the painful loss to Boston College, the Cougars had to come out hot, and it did scoring on the first four possessions. Utah State's offense is inept, and BYU's defense didn't do anything to let it in the game. If the Cougar offense can limit mistakes and keep the offensive balance it's shown when things are working correctly, it'll have a great shot to win at TCU next week.

Sept. 16
Boston College 30 ... BYU 23 2OT
At both teams missed field goals in the first overtime, Matt Ryan connected with Tony Gonzalez for a 25-yard touchdown and a BC lead in the second overtime, and then the defense came to the rescue as Jamie Silva made a diving interception, which took several minutes to be reviewed, to finally stop the BYU offense. The Cougars rolled up 554 yards of total offense with John Beck running for a score, throwing for another, and bombing away leading the attack to 554 yards. But drive after drive ended up in field goal attempts with Jared McLaughlin hitting three, but missing enough to keep the Eagles in the game. BC turned it over four times, but got two short Brian Toal touchdowns and an 18-yard scoring grab from Gonzales to keep pace.
Player of the game ... In a losing cause, BYU QB John Beck completed 38 of 59 passes for 436 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and he ran for a score.
Stat Leaders: Boston College - Passing: Matt Ryan, 29-48, 356 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: L.V. Whitworth, 11-61. Receiving: Brandon Robinson, 7-140
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 38-59, 436 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing:
Curtis Brown, 15-49. Receiving: Curtis Brown, 11-94
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU knows if can put up big yards, but it has to start being better at converting long drives into field goals. It had the potential to blowout Boston College if it could’ve been sharper in the red zone. Jared McLaughlin is a better punter than a field goal kicker; it's better to keep the offense in the hands of John Beck. As good as Beck is, Curtis Brown, Manase Tonga and Fui Vakapuna are dangerous runners who need the ball more. If Back’s ankle injury is a problem, the running game will have to shine.

Sept. 9
BYU 49 ... Tulsa 24
BYU overcame a second quarter 10-7 deficit with a 21-point run highlighted by a 62-yard touchdown pass from John Beck to Curtis Brown. Tulsa scored on a one-yard Tarrioun Adams run in the third quarter, but BYU went on another 21-point run to put it away finishing off with a six-yard Harvey Unga scoring run. Beck threw three scoring strikes on the day and Fui Vakapuna ran for two scores while the Cougar offense cranked out 467 total yards of offense.
Player of the game ... BYU QB John Beck completed 16 of 21 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns
Stat Leaders: BYU - Passing: John Beck, 16-21, 240 yds, 3 TD
Rushing: Curtis Brown, 21-125. Receiving: Matt Allen, 4-58
Tulsa - Passing: Paul Smith, 19-32, 182 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Tarrion Adams, 8-23, 1 TD. Receiving: Tarrion Adams, 7-89
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU had near-perfect offensive balance against Tulsa with 240 passing yards and 227 on the ground, and now it has to keep the consistency going in a tough road trip to Boston College. Thee 11 penalties were a bit concerning, but that's nitpicking after a strong all-around game. The defense did a great job keeping Tulsa to 82 rushing yards and only 2.6 yards per carry, while on offense, Curtis Brown got back in the flow and was terrific. This was the BYU that fans were hoping for.

Sept. 2
Arizona 16 ... BYU 13
Arizona got a 48-yard field for from Nick Folk with one second to play to close out a sloppy game with 18 combined penalties and saw the two teams combine to convert a mere six of 26 third down chances. BYU got its only touchdown late in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Coates, while Arizona got it's touchdown on a two-yard pass to Anthony Johnson.
Player of the game ... Arizona PK Nick Folk hit three field goals including a 48-yard game-winner with one second left.
Stat Leaders: BYU - Passing: John Beck, 28-37, 289 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Curtis Brown, 11-23. Receiving: Curtis Brown, 6-39
Arizona - Passing: Willie Tuitama, 19-39, 186 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Chris Henry, 13-63. Receiving: Stephen Steptoe, 6-93
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
BYU's offense didn't get anything consistently going against a good team like Arizona but still almost came out with the win. With so many veterans and so much talent, the attack should be more effective and it has to average more than one-yard-per-carry to have a chance against the better teams. Curtis Brown was effectively taken out of the game, so John Beck has to be even more of a playmaker. Chalk this ugly all-around game up to rust, but the Cougars will get tagged by Tulsa next week if they play like this again.

2006 BYU Preview

BYU Preview | Offense |
Defense | Depth Chart | Further Analysis

In his first year as head coach, Bronco Mendenhall wanted to bring back the fire and the tradition of the old BYU teams. After three straight losing seasons under Gary Crowton, Mendenhall was successful in turning things around.

While most might consider the program to still be reloading after Crowton was dismissed, the expectations are always high in Provo. The fans want the old days of BYU back when the program was winning conference titles with some of the most prolific offenses in college football history, and this year's team might not disappoint with veteran quarterback John Beck, excellent running back Curtis Brown, a fantastic offensive line, and Mackey Award candidate Jonny Harline at tight end.

However, the defense full of question marks could give up points just as quickly. The line has issues with experience, the linebacking corps, while good, is nothing special, and the secondary might be a major problem until the middle of the season. All this means lots of shootouts, lots of scoring, and fun, fun, fun.

Welcome back to the days of the 45-41 shootouts. Welcome back to the days when BYU was relevant. And welcome back to the days when BYU's offense made opposing teams tremble. Sort of.

At one time, BYU was one of the most innovative programs in college football. It's offenses were able to move the ball at will with a high-octane passing attack that cranked out yards and points on everyone. Now the Cougars are followers continuing to employ a sort of spread formation, but it's the good, old-fashioned BYU passing game that will get everyone humming.

Thanks to Beck, who's in the hunt to finish as BYU's number two passer of all-time behind Ty Detmer, a 4,000-yard season is possible with at least 30 touchdowns as long as the wide receivers come through with a big season. Throw into the mix Brown, who should be a 1,000-yard runner, and BYU will put up pinball numbers. If the defense can just hold serve and make a couple of plays here and there, this could be a big bounce-back season.

If nothing else, the Cougar fan base is excited about the direction of its program. Mendenhall says and does all the right things, but winning is all that matters. This year's team might struggle here and there, but it'll show that BYU football is close to being back.

The Schedule: It shapes up well for Mountain West play with four non-conference games to use as tune-ups, helped most by a light scrimmage against Utah State, before the conference-opening showdown at TCU. If the Cougars can somehow get out of Fort Worth with a win, it's smooth sailing with home games against San Diego State and UNLV followed up by a road trip at Air Force. In other words, a win over TCU will likely mean an unbeaten conference record going into November with the road trip to Utah looming. The non-conference slate is tougher than it looks with road trips to Arizona and Boston College and a home date with Conference USA champion Tulsa.

Best Offensive Player: Senior QB John Beck. Other Mountain West quarterbacks will put up big numbers, but Beck has the experience, the offense, and the talent to put up the best numbers in the league. If BYU wins the league title, Beck will probably be the Mountain West player of the year.

Best Defensive Player: Senior LB Cameron Jensen. With 187 tackles over the last two years, Jensen has grown into the unquestioned leader of the defense and a legitimate All-America candidate. With the defense a big question mark, he'll have to be a steadying force from the start.

Key player to a successful season: Senior NT Hala Paongo. The defense needs to be better in all phases, but making sure things are solid on the inside will be a good starter. Cameron Jensen and Markell Staffieri will be good inside linebackers, so the more Paongo can be an anchor up front and let the linebackers roam free, the better.

The season will be a success if ... the Cougars come in second in the Mountain West. This is a relatively lofty goal considering the defense is mediocre at best and with road trips to TCU and Utah. The offense will simply outbomb everyone else.

Key game: Sept. 28 at TCU. Last year's 51-50 overtime loss to the Horned Frogs was a classic. If the Cougars can win the nationally televised Mountain West opener in Fort Worth, they'll be in a perfect position to go on a huge run up until the regular season ender at Utah. Lose to TCU and there will be no margin for error the rest of the way.

2005 Fun Stats:
