Wyoming 34 ... UNLV 26
Wyoming became bowl eligible by jumping out to a 34-10 lead helped by a
Karsteen touchdown run and a five-yard pass to Wade Betschart, along
with a trick play Ivan Harrison 18-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Holden.
And then the Cowboys have to hold on as UNLV scored 16 points in the
fourth quarter on a 18-yard Casey Flair catch from WR Ryan Wolfe and a
blocked punt return for a score from Chris Brogdon, along with two,
two-point conversions. The Rebels got into Wyoming territory on one
final drive, but stalled.
Player of the game ...
Wyoming RB Devin
Moore ran 13 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns and caught a pair of
passes for a yard.
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween,
18-26, 179 yds, 1 TD, 2 INTs
Rushing: Devin Moore, 13-70, 2 TDs Receiving: Tyler
Holden, 5-52, 1 TD
UNLV - Passing: Rocky Hinds, 18-36, 144 yds, 1 TD,
1 INT
Rushing: David Peeples, 5-24 Receiving: Casey Flair, 5-60, 1
TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
The
Cowboys did what they were supposed to do against a bad team like UNLV
and jumped out early with the outcome never in doubt. Karsten Sween had
a strong performance, even with two interceptions, while Devin Moore and
Wynel Seldon provided nice balance to the attack to keep control of the
game and the tempo. Even though a bowl game isn’t a guarantee at 6-6,
just getting eligible puts a cap on a fantastic bounce-back year from
the 2005 disaster.

BYU 55 ... Wyoming 7
BYU ripped apart Wyoming with a 31-0 halftime lead and going up 55-0
before Wyoming's Devin Moore tore off a 71-yard touchdown run in the
final minutes. John Beck threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more
and Curtis Brown added two one-yard scores. The Cougar defense held the
Cowboys to 173 yards before the garbage-time touchdown run. Beck moved
past Jim McMahon for the number two spot on BYU's all-time passing list.
Player of the game ...
BYU QB John Beck completed
20 of 26 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two scores
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween,
14-27, 102 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Devin Moore, 5-93, 1 TD Receiving: Michael
Ford, 4-31
BYU - Passing: John Beck, 20-26, 310 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Curtis Brown, 22-91, 2 TD Receiving: Jonny
Harline, 6-105, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Wyoming
had its chance to make a big statement on the season and show that it
belongs in the discussion among the best Mountain West teams, and then
it got obliterated by BYU to go right back down among the also-rans. A
bowl bid is still possible with a win at UNLV in nine days, but to beat
even a bottom-feeder like the Rebels, Karsten Sween has to turn around
his season. After showing great promise early on, he's stunk it up over
the last three weeks. He spread it around well, but he wasn't nearly
consistent enough.
Nov. 4
Wyoming 27 ... San Diego State 24
San Diego State jumped out to a 17-3 lead helped by a 60-yard
touchdown catch from Chazray Schilens and a 23-yard T.J. McKay
fumble recovery for a score, and then the Wyoming running game took
over. Joe Harris pounded in two short touchdown runs and Wade
Betschart caught a five-yard scoring pass with all helped by the
running of Devin Moore. Aric Goodman nailed a 52-yard shot to put UW
up by ten, which turned out to be a needed score with Brett Swain
closing out the scoring with a 66-yard Brett Swain catch. UW
recovered the onside kick.
Player of the game ...
Wyoming RB Devin Moore ran 22 times
for 131 yards
Stat Leaders: San Diego State - Passing: Kevin
Craft, 6-15, 98 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Atiyyeh Henderson, 9-30 Receiving: Atiyyeh
Henderson, 3-8
Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween, 15-25, 97 yds,
1 TD
Rushing: Devin Moore, 22-131 Receiving:
Tyler Holden, 6-35
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... The
offensive line had problems
in pass protection against San Diego State, but getting a push for
the ground game was no problem with Devin Moore and Joe Harris each
coming up with brilliant days to help control the clock for almost
38 minutes. With Karsten Sween and the short passing game going next
to nowhere, the play of the defense, outside of a few key plays,
came up clutch until late. Now comes the big test at BYU. Win that,
and then the team really will be on its way to a special season.
Oct. 28
TCU 26 ... Wyoming 3
TCU got out to a 19-0 lead going into the fourth quarter on
short touchdown runs from Lonta Hobbs and Marcus Brock and two Peter
LaCoco field goals, and Hobbs put things away with a one-yard run
late. The Wyoming offense was shut down gaining just 165 yards and
only managing a fourth quarter field goal. The Horned Frogs
outrushed the Cowboys 188 yards to 28.
Player of the game ...
TCU QB Jeff Ballard
completed 11 of 18 passes for 244 yards with two interceptions
Stat Leaders: TCU - Passing: Jeff Ballard, 11-18,
244 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Lonta Hobbs, 13-67, 2 TD Receiving: Quentil
Harmon, 3-105
Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween, 15-28, 137 yds, 1
INT
Rushing: Joe Harris, 6-40 Receiving: Tyler Holden, 3-67
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Just when
Wyoming appeared to be on an unstoppable roll, thud. TCU's defense
is going to come up with brilliant performances from time to time,
but the Cowboy defense couldn't match the production with the pass
defense getting picked apart just enough to allow Jeff Ballard to
keep things moving. With a trip to BYU still looming, next week's
game against San Diego State is a must win. It should be a layup,
but the offense can't be as ineffective as it was this week.
Oct. 21
Wyoming 24 ... Colorado State 0
Wyoming got two touchdown passes from Karsten Sween in the
third quarter and got a 25-yard Joe Harris touchdown run in the fourth
on the way to the shut out win. The defense forced three turnovers and
held the Rams to 259 yards of total offense and only 42 rushing yards.
The Rams never got within scoring range.
Player of the game ...
Wyoming RB Wynel
Seldon ran 18 times for 112 yards.
Stat Leaders: Colorado State - Passing: Caleb Hanie,
23-45, 217 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Nnamdi Ohaeri, 8-30 Receiving: Johnny
Walker, 6-69
Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween, 10-22, 152 yds, 2
TD
Rushing: Wynel Seldon, 18-112 Receiving: Hoost Marsh,
3-26
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Look out
Mountain West, Wyoming is playing really, really well. Even though
Karsten Sween wasn't sharp against Colorado State, Wynel Seldon and the
running game carried the offense while Sween got the two big scoring
passes needed in the second half to pull away. DB John Wendling came up
with an All-America caliber performance, but is anyone noticing? With
three road games in the final four games, including dates at TCU and BYU,
there will be a few chances for exposure.
Oct. 14
Wyoming 31 ... Utah 15
Wyoming got out to a 31-0 lead helped by a 24-yard touchdown
catch from Michael Ford and a four-yard run from Karsten Sween. The
defense got into the act in the second half with Julius Stinson
returning an interception 42 yards for a touchdown. Utah finally got on
the board with a 35-yard Eric Weddle fumble return for a score, but the
offense didn't get in the end zone until just over four minutes to play
on a three-yard Derrek Richards touchdown catch.
Player of the game ...
Wyoming QB Karsten
Sween went 17-of-24 for 202 yards and a touchdown and added a score on
the ground.
Stat Leaders: Utah - Passing: Brett Ratliff, 16-31,
111 yds, 2 INTs
Rushing: Brent Casteel, 6-34 Receiving: Derrek Richards,
7-57
Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween, 17-24, 202 yds, 1
TD
Rushing: Wynel Seldon, 14-64 Receiving: Michael Ford, 5-92
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Somewhat quietly, Wyoming is playing
extremely well and has suddenly thrust itself into the Mountain West
title race after dominating Utah, at least for about half the game. The
defense never let Utah get its offense on track and was tremendous
against the run. It would've been nice to have seen a full 60 minutes
from the offense, but it did enough early to capitalize on several big
mistakes to run away with the win. Colorado State isn't going to run on
the Cowboys next week, so if the secondary can hold up against Caleb
Hanie and the Ram passing attack, they'll have a three-game winning
streak in Mountain West play.
Oct. 7
Wyoming 14 ... New Mexico 10
Karsten Sween overcame a lousy first half to throw two second
half passes with a 12-yard play to Hoost Marsh and a four-yard play
to Michael Ford. The Wyoming defense held time and again in the
second half while holding New Mexico to 190 yards of total offense
for the game. The Lobos got a one-yard Rodney Ferguson touchdown run
in the first quarter off a Wyoming turnovers, and went ten yards in
eight plays for a 45-yard Kenny Byrd field goal in the second.
Player of the game ... Wyoming S John Wendling made seven
tackles, broke up a pass, and forced a fumble.
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween,
19-32, 204 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Wynel Seldon, 17-55 Receiving:
Michael Ford, 5-58, 1 TD
New Mexico - Passing: Donovan Porterie, 7-17,
68 yds
Rushing: Rodney Ferguson, 24-79, 1 TD Receiving:
Travis Brown, 3-59
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Wyoming
was way overdue to win a close game, and it helped to play a New
Mexico team that's having even more problems with overall
consistency. Karsten Sween has the reigns to the offense now, and he
was able to work through his first half problems to lead the team to
two nice scoring drives in the second half. John Wendling the the
Cowboy defense were flying all over the field; they'll have to play
even faster against Utah next week.
Sept. 30
Syracuse 40 ... Wyoming 34 2OT
Delone Carter ran for a 15-yard score in the second overtime
after the Syracuse defense held on Wyoming's possession. Carter ran
for a 16-yard score in the first overtime, but the Cowboys answered
with a 14-yard Wynel Seldon scoring run. Carter scored four times in
the see-saw game with neither team ever getting up by more than one
score. Carter appeared to put the game away late in the fourth
quarter on a 13-yard scoring run, but Wyoming was able to go on a
92-yard, 14-play drive culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to
Hoost Marsh with five seconds to play.
Player of the
game ...
Syracuse RB
Delone Carter had 20 carries for 131 yards and four touchdowns,
including the game-winner in the second overtime.
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Karsten Sween,
19-27, 201 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT
Rushing: Devin Moore, 7-86 Receiving: Michael Ford,
12-110
Syracuse - Passing: Perry Patterson, 11-25, 121
yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Delone Carter, 20-131, 4 TDs Receiving: Tom
Ferron, 4-64, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Wyoming's
offense was able to roll up 515 yards of total offense against
Syracuse and came through with a fantastic drive at the end of
regulation to force overtime, but the defense couldn't hold when it
was needed most. UW's four turnovers proved to be way too costly,
and the ten penalties
didn't help. On the plus side, the attack blew up on the road
against a solid defense. If it can do this, either with Jacob Doss
or Karsten Sween at quarterback, there will be several wins once
Mountain West play really gets rolling.
Sept. 23
Air Force 31 ... Wyoming 24
Air Force held on to the ball for over forty minutes and ran
for 327 yards as Shaun Carney scored twice and threw a 20-yard touchdown
pass to Beau Suder for a 28-14 lead. Wyoming came back with a 31-yard
touchdown catch from Michael Ford, but Air Force put it out of reach for
good with a 27-yard Zach Sasser field goal. Wyoming was able to get
within seven with 3:29 to play, but saw its final drive stall when RB
Devin Moore lost a fumble. Cowboy safeties Ward Dobbs and John Wendling
combined for 32 tackles.
Player of the game ... Air Force QB Shaun Carney
completed three of seven passes for 40 yards and a touchdown and ran 25
times for 131 yards and two scores.
Stat Leaders: Air Force - Passing: Shaun
Carney, 3-7, 40 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Shaun Carney, 25-131, 2 TD Receiving:
Beau Suder, 1-20, 1 TD
Wyoming - Passing: Jacob Doss, 13-21, 169
yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Devin Moore, 6-52 Receiving: Michael
Ford, 4-58, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Wyoming
simply couldn't get the ball away from Air Force. The Falcon offense ran
for 19 first downs and converted 12 of 18 chances while holding on to
the ball for over 22 minutes in the second half. There was simply no
time for the Cowboys to run enough play. Jacob Doss was fine throwing
the ball and the running game wasn't awful, but now UW is 1-3 with three
tight losses in a row with games at Syracuse and New Mexico up next. If
that wasn't bad enough, Utah, Colorado State, and TCU follow. This is a
good team that's not getting any big breaks.
Sept. 16
Boise State 17 ... Wyoming 10
Boise State needed its defense to get by Wyoming with a
61-yard interception return for a touchdown from Quinton Jones to go
along with a six-yard scoring run from Jared Zabransky for a 17-3 lead
going into the fourth quarter. The Cowboys got a one-yard scoring run
from Jacob Doss, but saw their one last drive die with an interception.
Player of the game ... Boise State LB Korey Hall made
11 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Stat Leaders: Boise State - Passing:
Jared Zabrasnsky, 12-20, 116 yds
Rushing: Ian Johnson, 23-119 Receiving:
Drisan James, 4-16
Wyoming - Passing: Jacob Doss, 14-30, 178
yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Wynel Seldon, 12-39. Receiving: Michael
Ford, 4-72
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... No one's
paying any attention to Wyoming, but it's roughly two big plays away
from being 3-0. Its defense has been outstanding so far and held the
high-powered Boise State attack to only 246 yards of total offense.
Inefficiency and turnovers were the problem on offense, but the team
might be the deep sleeper in the Mountain West race if it continues to
play this well defensively. Jacob Doss has to be more consistent
throwing the ball to beat teams like TCU, Utah and BYU, but the D should
be enough to handle Air Force and New Mexico.
Sept. 9
Virginia 13 ... Wyoming 12
Virginia scored on its first play in overtime on a 25-yard
pass to Kevin Ogletree, and then held on as Wyoming's Aric Goodman
missed the extra point couldn't after a three-yard Chris Sundberg
touchdown catch. It was a battle of field goals for four quarters with
Goodman connecting from 23 and 39 yards out and Virginia's Chris Gould
hitting from 29 and 34 yards away. Wyoming outgained the Cavaliers 313
yards to 206, but two turnovers and failure to keep drives consistently
moving proved costly.
Player of the game ... Virginia WR Kevin Ogletree
caught ten passes for 95 yards and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: Virginia - Passing:
Christian Olsen, 12-21, 89 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Cedric Peerman, 16-41. Receiving:
Kevin Ogletree, 10-95, 1 TD
Wyoming - Passing: Jacob Doss, 23-32 145,
1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: John Wendling, 2-60 Receiving:
Michael Ford, 9-63
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Wyoming
went up against a big-name team in Virginia in outplayed it only to see
it all come apart on a missed extra point. Jacob Doss had a decent day
throwing the ball, but Wynel Seldon couldn't get the running game going
and points were way too hard to come by for an offense that prides
itself on its explosive potential. On the plus side, this appears, at
least early on, to the the best defense yet under Joe Glenn. It'll have
to be at another level next week against Boise State.
Sept. 2
Wyoming 38 ... Utah State 7
Wyoming got out to a 17-7 lead on two Jacob Doss touchdown
passes highlighted by a 39-yard strike to Hoost Marsh, and then put the
game away in less than two minutes as Tyler Holden took a short pass,
broke a tackle, and went 51 yards for a score, and then Michael Medina
picked off Utah State QB Leon Jackson for a 20 yard touchdown. Marsh
closed out the scoring with a two-yard scoring run. Utah State's lone
touchdown came on a 45-yard interception return for a score from Antonio
Taylor.
Player of the game ... Wyoming QB Jacob Doss completed
17 of 26 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns and ran nine times
for 29 yards.
Stat Leaders: Wyoming - Passing: Jacob
Doss, 17-26, 209 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Wynel Seldon, 18-99. Receiving:
Tyler Hoden, 4-71, 1 TD
Utah State - Passing: Leon Jackson,
10-22, 74 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Marcus Cross, 11-44. Receiving: Kevin
Robinson, 3-41
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Does the easy win over Utah State mean
Wyoming might have the team everyone thought it could be last year?
Outside of the interception for a touchdown, Jacob Doss had an
efficient, solid game getting plenty of help from his receivers. More
importantly, the defense came up with a fantastic game holding the
Aggies to a mere 55 rushing yards and 129 yards of total offense. For
this week at least, this was an athletic-looking, tough team that showed
it might have a shot at Virginia next week.

Further Analysis
Thud. Big Thud.
After one shocking Las Vegas Bowl win over an indifferent UCLA
team that lost its starting quarterback right off the bat, Wyoming
was suddenly everyone's "it" team. Head coach Joe Glenn was being
hailed as a rising superstar, the Cowboys were supposed to be a
threat in the Mountain West race.
We seemed to be the only ones who saw the potential for a mediocre
season predicting UW would go 5-6, and that followed with a
saturation bombing of anger from the rabid Cowboy fans that matched
all the passion of even the biggest SEC of Big Ten schools.
The fan base might not be huge, but it wants a winner and will go
nuts if Glenn really can turn this program around. Unfortunately, it
didn't happen last year, and it's not going to happen this season
thanks to the way the schedule plays out along with several major
issues on both sides of the ball.
Winning away from Jonah Field has been tough for UW under Glenn with a
4-12 regular season record, and five of the final eight games this year
are on the road. That means the team will have to be nearly perfect at
home, but there will be nasty battles with Utah, Boise State and
Colorado State to deal with.
The team has an interesting mix of huge strengths and glaring
weaknesses. The backfield is loaded with three great running backs, but
the receiving corps is average at best and there's a four-way battle
going on to figure out who the starting quarterback will be. The
defensive line is one of the worst in the Mountain West, but the
linebacking corps in the new 3-4 scheme should be excellent. John
Wendling is one of the nation's better safeties, but corner will be a
big question mark.
There is speed in some spots and there is promise for the offense to
grow into an explosive force if everything breaks right, but can this be
a bowl team? Can Glenn pull the program up from its nosedive following a
brutal six game losing streak that closed out last year? It's possible
if there's a hot start because ...
The
Schedule: ... UW plays three home games in the first four and needs
to beat Utah State, Boise State and Air Force. A road trip to Syracuse
is a toss-up, and it has to be good enough to win at New Mexico to have
any dreams of a winning season. This isn't a good enough team to beat
TCU or BYU, so those games might as well be on the road. San Diego State
and at UNLV are very winnable.
Best
Offensive Player: Senior OT Chase Johnson. The massive 6-8,
325-pound senior has grown into a solid all-around blocker who should
challenge for first team all-star honors. He leads a good starting front
five that should be the best yet in the Joe Glenn era.
Best
Defensive Player: Senior SS John Wendling. The big, fast tackling
machine suffers from playing in the same conference as Utah's Eric
Weddle. At 6-1 and 222 pounds with sub-4.4 speed, he's a sleeper pro
prospect who'll get more and more attention as the year goes on from the
scouts.
Key player
to a successful season:
Junior QB Jacob
Doss. He'll have to battle with Karsten Sween, Stinson Dean and Ian
Hetrick to win the starting job, but he has the most experience and
appears to be the most ready to step in for the Bramlet brothers who
held the gig for so long. Keeping interceptions to a minimum will be the
biggest key.
The season
will be a success if ... UW gets back to a bowl game. If the team is any good, it
should beat Utah State, Air Force and San Diego State, and it needs to
win road games at Syracuse, New Mexico and UNLV. A big upset here or
there will also be a must.
Key game:
Oct. 7 at New Mexico. With the Mountain West big boys still ahead,
Wyoming has to beat Air Force in the conference opener and come up with
a victory in Albuquerque to be a relevant player in the title race. Last
year the Lobos won 27-24 helping the freefall that was the disastrous
second half of the Cowboy season.
2005 Fun
