2006 East Carolina Pirates Season, Game Recaps, Scores and Reviews

Dec. 23
PapaJohns.com Bowl
South Florida 24 ... East Carolina 7

South Florida got two touchdown runs from Benjamin Williams in the first eight minutes and held on from there as East Carolina drove deep into Bull territory time and again only to keep coming up empty. A 48-yard James Pinkney touchdown pass to Bobby Good in the first quarter were all the points the Pirates would get as two fumbles, a missed field goal, and poor pass protection allowing six sacks proved to be too much to overcome. USF QB Matt Grothe connected with Amarri Jackson for a 37-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, but ended up leaving the game with a shin injury. ECU also lost its quarterback as Pinkney was knocked out with a broken elbow. The Pirates outgained the Bulls 317 yards to 286, but were outgained 156 yards to 54 on the ground and only averaged 1.7 yards per carry.
Player of the game ... South Florida LB Stephen Nicholas made six tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and broke up two passes
Stat Leaders: South Florida - Passing: Matt Grothe, 6-10, 81 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Benjamin Williams, 17-67, 2 TD  Receiving: Ean Randolph, 2-27
East Carolina - Passing: Rob Kass, 10-19, 138 yds
Rushing:
Dominique Lindsay, 12-85  Receiving:
Bobby Good, 5-116, 1 TD
Thoughts and Notes ... The South Florida defense set the tone right off the bat by flying around, coming up with big hits, and being more aggressive than East Carolina. The Pirate offense was able to move the ball, even when Rob Kass filled in for James Pinkney, but didn't close and couldn't generate points to get back into the game. Basically, ECU made mistakes; South Florida didn't. ... While he wasn't sensational, Pat Julmiste did a nice job when Matt Grothe got hurt. The former starting quarterback was accurate, didn't force anything, and ran extremely well. ... This was a huge step for USF. The program hasn't been in existence all that long, but it's proven it can compete with the best in the Big East and now it has the first bowl win in the school's history. ... East Carolina needs to get better on the lines to win a game like this. The offensive front couldn't handle USF's speed or quickness, while the defensive line got pushed around a bit too much in key situations.

Nov. 25
East Carolina 21 ... NC State 16
East Carolina overcame a 10-7 deficit with a 53-yard Aundrae Allison touchdown catch with four seconds left in the first half, and put it away in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard Brandon Fractious scoring run. The Wolfpack got two, two-yard touchdown runs, but the offense sputtered throughout. ECU answered a two-yard Toney Baker  touchdown run with a 12-play, 84-yard drive finished with a two-yard Jay Sonnhalter touchdown catch, and then the defense did the rest.
Player of the game ... East Carolina RB Brandon Fractious ran 17 times for 92 yards and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: NC State- Passing: Daniel Evans, 17-27, 186 yds
Rushing: Toney Baker, 13-52, 1 TD  Receiving: Anthony Hill, 4-47
East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 14-29, 220 yds, 2 TD
Rushing:
Brandon Fractious, 17-92, 1 TD  Receiving: Aundrae Allison, 3-72, 1 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
It might not have been pretty, but East Carolina got the win it needed to assure itself of a bowl game beating NC State with good defense and just enough of an offense to get by. It would be nice if there was a bit more explosion and more pop to the passing game, but James Pinkney came up with the long pass he had to have at the end of the first half to take the momentum and get ECU the victory. The defense had a strong bounce-back performance after the crushing late loss to Rice with good pressure from all sides.

Nov. 18
Rice 18 ... East Carolina 17
Rice got a seven-yard Joel Armstrong touchdown run with just under three minutes to play, and after forcing an ECU three-and-out, went 54 yards in nine plays to get a 40-yard Clark Fangmeier field goal to win the game with three seconds to play. Armstrong was in for an injured Chase Clement, who threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Jarett Dillard in the second quarter. East Carolina got in the end zone on a Davon Drew five-yard scoring grab and a 43-yar Chris Johnson touchdown run. Rice outgained ECU 458 yards to 301.
Player of the game ... Rice K Clark Fangmeier kicked a career-best 40-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game to give the Owls the victory.
Stat Leaders: East Carolina
- Passing: James Pinkney, 10-17, 83 yds, 1 TD, 2 INTs
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 10-83  Receiving: Aundrae Allison, 6-39
Rice - Passing: Chase Clement, 17-29, 182 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Quinton Smith, 21-115  Receiving: Jarrett Dillard, 5-73, 1 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Where was the short to midrange passing game against Rice? It might not have seemed necessary with the running game rumbling as well as it did gaining 218 yards, but the Pirates are at their best when James Pinkney is in a groove. With two interceptions and two three-and-outs late in the fourth cost the Pirates a win and, unless Southern Miss loses to Marshall, a shot to play for the Conference USA title. Now they’ll be lucky to play in a bowl.

Nov. 11
East Carolina 33 ... Marshall 20
East Carolina got up 13-0 in the first half on two of Robert Lee's four field goals and a Brandon Fractious one-yard touchdown run off a turnover, and was never threatened the rest of the way. Marshall's running game was stuffed gaining just 37 yards even though Ahmad Bradshaw ran for two short touchdown runs. ECU WR Aundre Allison threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Steven Rogers and James Pinkney threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Henry.
Player of the game ... East Carolina QB James Pinkney completed 21 of 27 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 21-27, 270 yds, 1 TD
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 16-67, 1 TD  Receiving: Aundre Allison, 6-46
Marshall - Passing: Jimmy Skinner, 24-45, 285 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Ahmad Bradshaw, 10-26, 2 TD   Receiving: Cody Slate, 9-140, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... The East title is there for the taking just needing a win at Rice to clinch. With Southern Miss getting UAB and Marshall to finish, the Pirates won't be able to avoid a slip. The offensive line had a lousy day in the win over the Herd allowing too many plays happen in the backfield and not getting any push for the running game. Fortunately for ECU, James Pinkney kept his poise throughout and had an efficient day as the game was never really in doubt. The run defense was fantastic.

Nov. 4
East Carolina 23 ... UCF 10
East Carolina got a career day from RB Brandon Fractious, who ran for 128 yards with a 17-yard touchdown while the defense kept the UCF offense to 263 yards and just a three-yard Kevin Smith touchdown and a 51-yard Michael Torres field goal, needed a 51-yard interception return for a score from Kasey Ross to finally put the game away. Robert Lee hit two 42-yard field goals for the Pirate s to go along with a 31-yard shot to start the scoring.
Player of the game ... East Carolina RB Brandon Fractious ran 23 times for 128 yards and a touchdowns
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 16-30, 135 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 23-128, 1 TD  Receiving: Aundre Allison, 8-67
UCF - Passing: Kyle Israel, 18-34, 205 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Kevin Smith, 18-50, 1 TD  Receiving: Mike Walker, 9-85
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... ECU won its third in a row and while it doesn't have complete command of the East race, it has the inside track to playing in the Conference USA championship game. It would help if the ECU passing game could be a bit more efficient; James Pinkney has thrown four interceptions and no touchdown passes over the last two weeks. Brandon Fractious and the running game picked up the slack against UCF and might need to keep it up against Marshall and Rice.

Oct. 28
East Carolina 20 ... Southern Miss 17 OT
East Carolina's Travis Williams picked off a pass in the end zone in overtime after Ben Hartman nailed a 19-yard field goal on the Pirate's possession. In a defensive battle, East Carolina countered a nine-yard Ed Morgan touchdown catch with a kickoff return for a score from Chris Johnson. Tied at ten midway through the third, ECU was driving only to have Eddie Hicks pick off a pass and take it 87 yards for a touchdown. ECU was able to force overtime with a two-yard James Pinkney touchdown run with :13 to play to cap off a ten-play, 60-yard drive that took of 4:27.
Player of the game ... In a losing cause, Southern Miss LB Gerald McRath made 13 tackles and a sack
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 20-33, 197 yds, 2 INT
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 15-50  Receiving: Aundre Allison, 4-58
Southern Miss - Passing: Jeremy Young, 13-20, 79 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Damion Fletcher, 16-59  Receiving:
Chris Johnson, 4-19
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
With two good wins in a row, East Carolina is back in the bowl hunt with winnable games ahead against UCF, Marshall and Rice. The offense has been solid all year, but the defense showed against Southern Miss that it could play doing a great job of stalling drives while coming up with the big stops in the second half to keep the game alive. James Pinkney didn't have his best game, but he was able to lead the team to the key late scoring drive when it was needed most.

Oct. 21
East Carolina 38 ... SMU 21
East Carolina got a huge day from James Pinkney with 391 yards along with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Davon Drew in the first quarter and a 30-yard pass to Aundre Allison in the fourth. Pinkney also ran for a ten-yard score, and Brandon Simmons ran for two, one-yard scores, to pull away in the fourth quarter. SMU tied it at14 in the first half on two Justin Willis touchdown passes to Emmanuel Sanders, but the defense couldn't handle the Pirate passing game.
Player of the game ... East Carolina QB James Pinkney completed 31 of 40 passes for 391 yards and two touchdowns and ran ten times for a team-leading 31 yards and a score.
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 31-40, 391 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: James Pinkney, 10-31, 1 TD  Receiving: Aundre Allison, 13-138, 1 TD
SMU - Passing: Justin Willis, 22-33, 224 yds, 2 TD
Rushing:
James Mapps, 8-37  Receiving: Emmanuel Sanders, 8-87, 2 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
This is the James Pinkney everyone was waiting for. After an awful game in the loss to Tulsa, Pinkney came up with the best all-around game of his career bombing away at will on SMU. The running game went absolutely nowhere averaging just 1.2 yards per carry, but when the passing attack is as effective as it was against the Mustangs, it doesn't matter. Now the team has to be even better with four road trips in the final five games needing three wins to become bowl eligible. Beating Southern Miss this week would be a big step for the program.

Oct. 14
Tulsa 31 ... East Carolina 10
Paul Smith ran for two touchdowns and threw a seven-yard scoring pass to Ryan Bugg as Tulsa dominated ECU with 234 rushing yards controlling the clock for almost 38 minutes. East Carolina was able to tie it up early with a four-yard James Pinkney touchdown run, but failed to get back on the board until early in the fourth on a 31-yard Robert Lee field goal. The Pirates turned it over three times and finished with just 241 yards of total offense.
Player of the game ... Tulsa QB Paul Smith was 15-of-21 for 124 yards, one touchdown and one interception and ran for 40 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.
Stat Leaders: Tulsa - Passing: Paul Smith, 15-21, 124 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Courtney Tennial, 22-88, 1 TD Receiving: Idris Moss, 8-76
East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 13-27, 92 yds
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 10-61  Receiving: Bobby Good, 7-48

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
East Carolina was completely taken out of its offense by Tulsa's ball-control attack. The Pirates, who did such a great job running the ball on Virginia the week before, struggled to keep the chains moving. James Pinkney has to be a bit sharper and a bit more productive throwing the ball and getting the offense moving. He spread it around well, but he failed to do anything to slow down Tulsa's momentum. Now the Pirates have to deal with the ultra-efficient Justin Willis and SMU before going to Southern Miss. The season might be slipping away in a hurry.

Oct. 7
East Carolina 31 ... Virginia 21
East Carolina was without top receiver Aundre Allison and running back Chris Johnson, but still got rushing touchdown from Brandon Simmons, Brandon Fractious and James Pinkney for a 24-7 first half lead. Virginia fought its way back with a one-yard Jason Snelling touchdown run and a nine-yard Fontel Mines scoring catch, but the latter came with just 18 seconds to play. The Pirates pounded their way to 208 rushing yards and controlled the ball for 38:14.
Player of the game ... The entire East Carolina offensive line for paving the way for 208 rushing yards
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 17-30, 224 yds
Rushing: Brandon Fractious, 19-103, 1 TD. Receiving: Bobby Good, 5-102
Virginia  - Passing: Jameel Sewell, 15-31, 123 yds, 1 TD
Rushing:
Jason Snelling, 16-103, 1 TD. Receiving: Fontel Mines, 4-35, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Beating Virginia was a total team effort with Brandon Fractious doing a great job in place of Chris Johnson yet again running the ball, while the offensive line pounded the way for a big rushing day. Bobby Good might not be Aundre Allison, but he's a good, solid receiver who can be used as a go-to target. Now the Pirates have to carry over this momentum into a Conference USA must-win against Tulsa.

Sept. 23
West Virginia 27 ... East Carolina 10
Pat White threw for 216 yards with two touchdown passes and a five-yard run in a tougher fight than most expected. The dagger came on a brilliant play by Darius Reynaud, who took a White pass and weaved his way down the field 60 yards for a score to make it 24-10 in the fourth quarter. East Carolina battled with a 47-yard touchdown catch from Aundre Allison and a 27-yard field goal from Robert Lee. West Virginia "only" ran for 153 yards, but the defense held East Carolina to 41 yards on the ground.
Player of the game ... West Virginia QB Pat White completed 17 of 24 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns and ran 11 times for 39 yards and another score.
Stat Leaders: West Virginia - Passing: Pat White, 17-24, 216 yds, 2 TDs, 3 INTs
Rushing: Steve Slaton, 24-80  Receiving: Darius Reynaud, 5-110, 1 TD
East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 20-40, 247 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Brandon Fractious, 6-13 Receiving: Phillip Henry, 6-54

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
The Pirates had a decent day against the West Virginia running game, but it couldn't generate anything on the ground and couldn't get the one big play needed to make a push in the second half. James Pinkney has to be a bit sharper, and Aundre Allison has to be an even bigger part of the offense against the better teams. He had a rough day against the Mountaineers outside of a big touchdown catch. ECU won't win many games with 41 rushing yards.

Sept. 16
East Carolina 35 ... Memphis 20
East Carolina came up with five interceptions and outscored the Tigers 28-0 in the second half with pick sixes from Zach Slate and Kasey Ross along with a five-yard scoring run by Chris Johnson and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Aundre Allison. Martin Hankins threw three touchdown passes in the first half for the Tigers, but he was pressured all second half and couldn't stop giving the ball to the Pirates.
Player of the game ... Memphis DB Kasey Ross made eight tackles and one interception for a 77-yard touchdown.
Stat Leaders: Memphis - Passing: Martin Hankins, 24-45, 265 yds, 3 TD, 5 INT
Rushing: Joseph Doss, 23-99,. Receiving: Mario Pratcher, 5-44
East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 18-26, 236 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing:
Chris Johnson, 22-106, 2 TD  Receiving: Aundre Allison, 9-124, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Where did this timely defense come from? East Carolina broke its losing streak with a fantastic defensive performance in the second half against Memphis, while the offense was balanced and effective. There were three turnovers and some big problems early, but the team got a win after losing the first two in close battles. Now everything needs to be clicking to stay with West Virginia. That could be a problem if the run defense isn't tighter than it was against Joe Doss and the Tigers.

Sept. 9
UAB 17 ... East Carolina 12
With just over a minute to play, East Carolina appeared to be on the way to a thrilling win as Chris Henry caught a James Pinkney pass and tore off up the middle of the field and on his way to the end zone, but UAB's Chris Felder stripped the ball at the four yard line and Will Evans recovered to save the game. Chris Williams came off the bench to throw two 12-yard touchdown passes, one to Norris Drinkard and one to Steven Brown, for a 17-6 Blazer lead late, but ECU came back on a one-yard touchdown catch from Davon Drew with 4:45 to play, got the ball back with just over two minutes to play, and had one last chance before the fumble.
Player of the game ... UAB DB Chris Felder made four tackles and saved the game with a forced fumble
Stat Leaders: UAB - Passing: Chris Williams, 12-16, 144 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Corey Hunt, 16-63,. Receiving: Norris Drinkard, 5-78, 1 TD
East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 20-38, 280 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Chris Johnson, 12-51  Receiving: Phillip Hendry, 6-133
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Can East Carolina win the close games? It certainly hasn't been able to over the first two weeks, but that's mainly because it has taken too long for the offense to get going. The running game should be far more productive with Chris Johnson to hand off to, and James Pinkney has to do more to make plays early on. This is a good team that can still contend for the Conference USA crown, but there's almost no margin for error after this loss to UAB.

Sept. 2
Navy 28 ... East Carolina 23
Navy rolled up 403 rushing yards and only six passing as with Shun White, Brian Hampton, Adam Ballard and Reggie Campbell scoring short touchdowns with one coming in each quarter. East Carolina's passing game kept the game dead even until the fourth quarter one two scoring passes from James Pinkney with a ten-yard scoring strike to Phillip Henry cutting the lead to five with under five minutes to play, but Navy recovered the onside kick.
Player of the game ... Navy QB Brian Hampton ran 34 times for 149 yards and a touchdown. He completed two of six passes for six yards.
Stat Leaders: East Carolina - Passing: James Pinkney, 24-35, 283 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Domonique Lindsay, 3-38. Receiving: Aundrae Allison, 6-86
Navy - Passing: Brian Hampton, 2-6, 6 yds
Rushing:
Brian Hampton, 34-149, 1 TD. Receiving: Reggie Campbell, 1-8
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
East Carolina's run defense did nothing to slow down the Navy ground attack and force QB Brian Hampton to throw the ball, and now it has to deal with Corey White and the UAB rushing game this week. On the plus side, Navy dominated the action rolling for over 400 yards on the ground and ECU was still in the game until the end. James Pinkney and the passing attack was solid, but there has to be more balance and more than 76 rushing yards to have a shot at beating teams like Memphis, West Virginia and Virginia in the coming weeks.

2006 East Carolina Preview

East Carolina Preview | Offense | Defense | Depth Chart | Further Analysis

Call last year the halting of the slide.

After the ugly but brief John Thompson era with a mere three wins (with two of them coming over Army) in 2003 and 2004, Skip Holtz came in and turned around a veteran team providing hope that ECU can again be among the Conference USA elite.

The passing game became a plus, one of the nation's worst defenses improved, and enough overall strides were made to erase most of the memories of the previous few seasons.

Holtz's first job has been to upgrade the overall talent level, and he has done it through the JUCO ranks to get immediate results in key spots.

Aundrae Allison turned into one of the league's best receivers last year, and three good linebackers were brought in to be an instant boost this season. Task number two will be to start beating the better teams.

Oh sure, wins over SMU and UAB prevented those two from finishing with winning records, but to be a player in the Conference USA world, the Pirates will have to shine against teams like Southern Miss, UCF and Tulsa. Those three beat ECU by a combined score of 108 to 40, and there's little hope to be in the hunt for the conference title without winning two of those three games this season. This team might be good enough to do it.

If Allison and running back Chris Johnson return healthy after missing spring ball with injuries, they'll combine with quarterback James Pinkney to form one of the league's best offenses. The offensive line has some patching up to do, but it's expected to be fine.

The defense needs to be better against the run after getting steamrolled over last season, but there's enough size up front and experience in the front four to hope for an improvement. The secondary should be excellent with several good veterans returning from one of the league's best pass defenses.

Remember, it wasn't all that long ago when this was one of the best programs in Conference USA, and Holtz appears to have it close to being there again. If it can make the same progress from last year to this year that it made in 2005, a title isn't out of the question.

The Schedule: It's a tale of two seasons with a stretch of five straight home games starting in mid-September followed up by four road games in the final five. Unfortunately, key division games against Southern Miss and UCF will be in back-to-back weeks away from Dowdy-Ficklen. The non-conference schedule is a bit of a beat going to Navy for the opener and playing West Virginia, Virginia, and at NC State.

Best Offensive Player: Senior WR Aundrae Allison. He cooled off after starting out as the nation's best receiver over the first three games, but he still became a steady number one target. He's returning from a knee injury with the expectation that he'll return fine and be one of the league's top weapons.

Best Defensive Player: Junior DE Marcus Hands. The 270-pound junior was having an All-America type season before getting knocked out with a shoulder injury. He's tackle-strong with excellent pass rushing moves. If healthy, he'll be the key cog on D.

Key player to a successful season: Senior QB James Pinkney. He had a fantastic first season under Holtz, and now he needs to be the difference between a good season and a possible title. He needs to cut down on the interceptions a little bit and be a quicker decision maker. Expect both to happen after a year in the system.

The season will be a success if ... East Carolina finishes with a winning year and goes to a bowl. If it's going to happen, there needs to be a hot start and a few upsets over the second half of the year. Pirate fans are still trying to erase memories of the last post-season appearance, the 64-61 loss to Marshall in the GMAC Bowl.

Key game: Sept. 9 at UAB. ECU ruined UAB's season with a 31-23 win in the season finale. A win in Birmingham is a must with home dates against bowl teams Memphis, West Virginia, Virginia and Tulsa ahead along with a few brutal conference road dates in the back half of the year.

2005 Fun Stats:
- First quarter scoring: Opponents 88 - East Carolina 34
- Rushing yards per game: Opponents 217.6 - East Carolina 137.5
- Third down conversions: Opponents 80 of 172 (47%) - East Carolina 59 of 159 (37%)
