2006 Troy Trojans Season, Game Recaps, Scores and Reviews

Dec. 22
2006 New Orleans Bowl
Troy 41 ... Rice 17

Troy dominated from the start with a 21 point first quarter thanks to to of Omar Haugabook's four touchdown passes and a two-yard scoring run. Haugabook connected with Gary Banks on a three-yard strike off an interception, and answered a Rice touchdown drive with a 56-yard scoring pass to Mykeal Terry. A seven-yard pass to Andrew Davis in the third and a five-yard pass to Toris Rutledge in the fourth put the game away. The Owls managed two Joel Armstrong touchdown passes including a late one-yard throw to Jarett Dillard keeping alive a streak of 15 straight games with a scoring grab. Armstrong threw five interceptions, with two picked off by Elbert Mack, who was playing with a heavy heart after losing his father earlier in the week.
Player of the game ... Troy QB Omar Haugabook completed 14 of 28 passes for 217 yards with four touchdowns and an interception and ran 14 times for 92 yards and a score.
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 14-28, 217 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Omar Haugabook, 14-92, 1 TD  Receiving: Mykeal Terry, 2-96 1 TD
Rice - Passing: Joel Armstrong, 35-54, 305 yds, 2 TD, 5 INT
Rushing: Joel Armstrong, 16-35  Receiving:
Jarett Dillard, 9-71, 1 TD
Notes and Thoughts ... Rice head coach Todd Graham had a fantastic first season, but he got his pants coached off by Larry Blakeney and the Troy staff. The Owl defense couldn't tackle, the offense completely ignored the running game even when the game was still competitive in the first half, and mistakes were made late with no pace to allow for any comeback attempt and a big error not going for two to try to get the score to 16 with five minutes to play. ... This was a huge win for the Sun Belt. By not just winning, but blowing out Rice, Troy showed that teams in the league can play. The defense, especially the secondary, was hitting from the start setting the tone for the game while the run defense was terrific. Troy seemed to play with more energy keyed by the defense along with the play of QB Omar Haugabook, who made every key throw and fought through cramping problems to keep the offense moving with his legs as well as his arm. ... Rice's Joel Armstrong isn't the type of quarterback who should be throwing 54 times. His throws have no zip and telegraphed his passes against the Trojans.

Dec. 2
Troy 26 ... FIU 13
It took a little while, but Troy put away FIU going into the fourth quarter helped by a 48-yard punt return for a score from Leodis McKelvin and a eight-yard Andrew Davis scoring grab. FIU's offense struggled, but got on the board early with a 22-yard Cory Fleming blocked punt for a touchdown and wasn't able to get back on the board until late in the fourth on a five-yard Chandler Williams scoring grab. FIU was held to just 20 rushing yards hurt by six Troy sacks.
Player of the game ... Troy DB Leodis McKelvin made five tackles and returned three punts for 66 yards and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 9-23, 53 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Omar Haugabook, 14-111  Receiving: Mykeal Terry, 4-9
FIU - Passing: Josh Padrick, 30-51, 225 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: A'mod Ned, 8-28  Receiving:
Chandler Williams, 11-90, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... It hasn't always been pretty, and the offense, especially the passing game, left a lot to be desired against FIU, but Troy is the Sun Belt champion and is off to the New Orleans Bowl. The defense came up with a great game against the awful FIU attack getting consistent pressure on QB Josh Padrick and being camped out in the backfield. Omar Haugabook didn't throw well, but he made up for it with his legs scrambling well. He has to do a much better job on third downs to beat Rice in the bowl game

Nov. 25
Troy 21 ... Middle Tennessee 20
Down 20-7 late in the game, Troy scored on a 19-yard Smokey Hampton touchdown catch with just over two minutes to play, recovered the onside kick, and went 42 yards in eight plays finishing off with a three-yard Gary Banks touchdown grab with 14 seconds to play. Middle Tennessee had started off the scoring with the first of two Colby Smith second quarter field goals and a four-yard Desmond Gee run off a trick play, but Troy stayed alive with an eight-yard Omar Haugabook touchdown run. When RB Desmond Gee his Stephen Chicola for a 15-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth, the Blue Raiders appeared to have it wrapped up.
Player of the game ... Troy WR Smokey Hampton caught seven passes for 104 yards and a touchdown
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 30-40, 235 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 18-83  Receiving: Smokey Hampton, 7-104, 1 TD
Middle Tennessee - Passing: Clint Marks, 12-20, 111 yds
Rushing: DeMarco McNair, 15-62  Receiving:
Desmond Gee, 5-15
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... WR Smokey Hampton overcame a rough few weeks to have a fantastic fourth quarter leading the team to within a win of a Sun Belt title. After the stunning, possible program changing win over Middle Tennessee, all the Trojans have to do is beat winless FIU to go to the New Orleans Bowl. Omar Haugabook did something Troy quarterbacks couldn't do in the past; go on clutch drives through the air. Also credit the defense with a fantastic game keeping the Blue Raiders under wraps all game long allowing just 203 yards of total offense.

Nov. 18
Arkansas State 33 ... Troy 26
Arkansas State scored 13 points in the final 12 minutes winning the game on a one-yard Curtis Wilkerson touchdown run with :17 to play after the defense came up with a safety on a Josh Williams tackle with just under four minutes to play. Corey Leonard threw two touchdown passes in the first half, including a 62-yard play to David Johnson, but Troy stayed even throughout helped by a 53-yard Mykeal Terry touchdown catch and two short Kenny Cattouse scoring runs.
Player of the game ... Arkansas State S Tyrell Johnson made nine tackles
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 19-30, 267 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 19-107, 2 TD  Receiving: Mykeal Terry, 6-140, 1 TD
Arkansas State - Passing: Corey Leonard, 13-26, 188 yds, 2 TD
Rushing: Reggie Arnold, 19-90  Receiving: Kevin Jones, 4-47, 1 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... While the loss to Arkansas State might not be a plus, it doesn't mean anything. If Troy beats Middle Tennessee next week and closes out with a win at FIU, it wins the Sun Belt title. To beat the Blue Raiders, the run defense has to be far better than it was against ASU giving up 233 yards, while the offense has to win the turnover battle. ASU held on to the ball for almost 38 minutes and had control late. Troy couldn't get control in the fourth quarter.

Nov. 11
Troy 24 ... Florida Atlantic 17
Troy took to the air against the Owls with Omar Haugabook connecting with Toris Rutledge for a 70-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and hitting Mykeal Terry on scoring passes fro 67 and 54 yards out. Florida Atlantic battled throughout getting an eight-yard scoring catch from Aaron Sanchez early and Rusty Smith's second touchdown pass of the game on a 14-yard.pass to Jamari Grant. The Owls got down to the Troy 21 on their final drive, but turned it over.
Player of the game ... Troy QB Omar Haugabook completed 20 of 29 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns with an interception
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 20-29, 325, 3 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 18-91  Receiving: Mykeal Terry, 5-153, 2 TD
Florida Atlantic - Passing: Rusty Smith, 24-37, 312 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Charles Pierre, 18-29  Receiving:
Aaron Sanchez, 5-37, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... With Florida Atlantic selling out to stop the run, Troy got fantastic days from its receivers with Toris Rutledge and Mykeal Terry coming up with three home runs to get out with a big win. Omar Haugabook only made one big mistake and put the ball where it needed to be all game long. There has to be some concern that the Troy secondary made the awful Owl offense look like a Super Bowl contender, but at 4-0 in conference play, Troy is in a position to win the title if it can get by Arkansas State this week and win the showdown at Middle Tennessee.

Nov. 4
Troy 42 ... UL Lafayette 28
Down 14-0 in the first half, Troy turned on the offense with Kenny Cattouse running for touchdowns from seven and eight yards out and Omar Haugabook running for a 15-yard score and connecting with Gary Brooks for a 58-yard touchdown. The Ragin' Cajuns got a 15-yard Phillip Nevels touchdown catch in the first quarter and a ten-yard Deon Wallace scoring run in the second, but only scored once each quarter and wasn't able to overcome the Trojans'  21-point second quarter run. Jerry Babb ran for a score and threw two touchdown passes for ULL.
Player of the game ... Troy RB Kenny Cattouse ran 24 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 12-19, 153 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 24-172, 2 TD  Receiving: Andrew Davis, 4-30
UL Lafayette - Passing: Jerry Babb, 16-29, 230 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Tyrell Fenroy, 18-95  Receiving: Derrick Smith, 4-82

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Where did all that offense come from? Give credit to Kenny Cattouse for coming up with a huge day on the ground against UL Lafayette, and the Trojans for not panicking, after getting down early. If the attack can keep playing like this, Troy will have a real shot to beat Middle Tennessee in a few weeks and be in the Sun Belt title hunt. The D could stand to be a little tighter and it would be nice if the offense put together a full 60 minutes, but three wins in a row is nothing to sneeze at.

Oct. 28
Troy 14 ... North Texas 6
Troy scored two second half touchdowns on a six-yard Gary Banks catch and a five-yard Anthony James run, while the defense held North Texas to 230 yards and two Dennis Hopovac field goals. Neither team did much offensively with North Texas failing on all 13 third down conversion attempts, while Troy couldn't get its attack moving until midway through the second half. UNT RB Jamario Thomas was held to 23 yards on 18 carries.
Player of the game ... Troy WR Gary Banks had nine catches for 57 yards and the go-ahead touchdown catch.
Stat Leaders: North Texas - Passing: Woody Wilson, 7-12, 89 yds
Rushing: Woody Wilson, 10-36  Receiving: Johnny Quinn, 8-108
Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 13-22, 101 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 17-56  Receiving: Gary Banks, 9-57, 1 TD

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
The offense might not be producing much, but the defense shut down North Texas and never let the Mean Green into the game in the second half. To get by the better Sun Belt teams and be a real player in the race, Omar Haugabook has got to start generating some of the big plays he made early in the year, or even two weeks ago in the win over UL Monroe. Keeping the mistakes to a minimum means everything considering the offense lacks firepower.

Oct. 14
Troy 24 ... UL Monroe 19
Troy got two touchdown run from freshman Justin Brooks and QB Omar Haugabook had his best game of the year, but it had to hang on as UL Monroe got within five on a one-yard Calvin Dawson touchdown run, threatened, and made it interesting. The Warhawks got two Cole Wilson field goals and an Erroll Hogan four-yard scoring run, but struggled with turnovers. The two teams combined to give it up nine times.
Player of the game ... Troy RB Justin Brooks ran 11 times for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Stat Leaders: UL Monroe - Passing: Kinsmon Lancaster, 15-31, 147 yds, 2 INTs
Rushing: Calvin Dawson, 20-118, 1 TD  Receiving: J.J. McCoy, 7-123
Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 27-40, 246 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Justin Brooks, 11-64, 2 TDs  Receiving: Gary Banks, 10-83

Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... It wasn't the prettiest performance, but the Trojans got enough offense to get by UL Monroe and go 1-0 in Sun Belt play. Justin Brooks showed off power and the ability to carry the running game to take the heat off Omar Haugabook. To avoid getting tripped up, the offense has to be much better at securing the ball and has to continue to be balanced. The defense was great at getting into the backfield.

Sept. 30
UAB 21 ... Troy 3
UAB held Troy to 58 rushing yards and only allowed a 35-yard Greg Whibbs field goal in the easy win. The Blazer offense got two touchdowns late in the first quarter on a 22-yard Sam Hunt touchdown run and a three-yard Trey Chaney dash, and put the game away on a Sam Hunt 29-yard touchdown pass to Sylvester Mencer in the third. The two teams combined for ten sacks.
Player of the game ... UAB QB Sam Hunt completed 11 of 16 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown with an interception and ran 321 times for 69 yards and a score.
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 18-31, 144 yds
Rushing: Justin Bray, 5-36. Receiving: Gary Banks, 6-35
UAB - Passing: Sam Hunt, 11-16, 145 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Sam Hunt, 21-69, 1 TD  Receiving: Sylvester Mencer, 5-96, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Troy couldn't handle the swarming UAB defense with QB Omar Haugabrook not getting any time to breathe. On the plus side, the Trojan defense showed why it might control the Sun Belt race by generating consistent pressure all game long. However, it didn't have an answer for QB Sam Hunt, who did a little of everything well. The Trojans can't win without a running game; 58 net yards isn't going to cut it.

Sept. 23
Nebraska 56 ... Troy 0
Nebraska cranked out 597 yards of total offense and scored 14 points in each quarter highlighted by touchdown runs from from Marlon Lucky from 34, 45, and 51 yards out. Kenny Wilson added scoring runs from three and eight yards out, and Zac Taylor connected with J.B. Phillips for a six-yard score. The Huskers cranked out 316 rushing yards and held Troy to 48 rushing yards and 1.8 yards per carry. Troy only converted one of 11 third down conversions and committed ten penalties.
Player of the game ... Nebraska RB Marlon Lucky ran ten times for 156 yards and three touchdowns
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 12-21, 88 yds, 1 INT
Rushing: Josh Allen, 4-39. Receiving: Smokey Hampton, 4-16
Nebraska - Passing: Zac Taylor, 14-17, 268 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Marlon Lucky, 10-156, 3 TD  Receiving: Terrence Nunn, 4-102
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ...
Troy appeared to finally hit a wall. That's to be expected after facing road games at Florida State, Georgia Tech and Nebraska with the run defense getting pushed all over the place and Omar Haugabook doing nothing to get the offense moving. The Trojan didn't help themselves with penalties, turnovers and horrible ineffectiveness on third downs. Now the team has to sharpen up to battle a stronger UAB team next week.

Sept. 16
Georgia Tech 35 ... Troy 20
It took a while for Georgia Tech to put Troy away with three fourth quarter touchdown runs including a 13-yard dash from Jamaal Evans to finally put things out of reach. Troy hung around with a one-yard Omar Haugabook touchdown run and a 25-yard scoring pass to Gary Banks, but the Tech offensive line pounded away in the fourth quarter to take control of the game. Tech QB Reggie Ball ran for a school-record, for a quarterback, 130 yards and threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to James Johnson.
Player of the game ... Georgia Tech QB Reggie Ball completed 12 of 29 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions and ran 16 times for 130 yards.
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 18-32, 182 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Rushing: Kenny Cattouse, 18-69 Receiving: Gary Banks, 8-104, 1 TD
Georgia Tech - Passing: Reggie Ball, 13-29, 164 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT
Rushing:
Reggie Ball, 16-130 yds. Receiving: James Johnson, 3-74, 1 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... Troy might not be happy with losing over the last two weeks, but it was impressive against Florida State and Georgia Tech hanging tough in both games until the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the defense isn't able to hold up after getting pounded on all game long. That means the offense will likely have to take more chances early to try to get up and hope the D can withstand the storm next week against Nebraska. If nothing else, the Trojans certainly appear to be a dangerous team to fear when Sun Belt play kicks in on October 14th against UL Monroe.

Sept. 9
Florida State 24 ... Troy 17
It took an interception from Buster Davis to set up the game-winning four-yard touchdown run from Joe Surrat in the final two minutes fro Florida State to escape a shocker. Troy was up 17-10 late in the fourth thanks to a one-yard Omar Haugabook touchdown run along with an earlier three-yard scoring pass to Toris Rutledge, but the Seminoles picked a perfect time to go on their best drive of the night going 81 yards in 11 plays finishing with a 15-yard touchdown catch from Chris Davis to tie it at 15. The FSU D allowed 295 yards of Troy offense, but it picked off Haugabook three times. The Noles fumbled it seven times and lost three.
Player of the game ... Florida State QB Drew Weatherford completed 30 of 43 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns with an interception
Stat Leaders: Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabook, 29-46, 219 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT
Rushing: Omar Haugabook, 7-12, 1 TD. Receiving: Toris Rutledge, 8-105, 1 TD
Florida State - Passing: Drew Weatherford, 30-43, 336 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Antone Smith, 6-25. Receiving: DeCody Fagg, 7-93
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... This might be a bitterly disappointing defeat against Florida State, but the program has to come away at least a little bit fired up that it had a shot late to beat one of the best teams in the nation. It's amazing what a good quarterback can do, and it'll be interesting to see how the team grows and progresses over the coming weeks as Omar Haugabook gets more and more comfortable. Now a running
game, at least against the good teams, has to develop to help him out.

Sept. 2
Troy 38 ... Alabama State 0
Troy's new, wide-open attack took a quarter to get moving, and then the floodgates opened with Omar Haugabrook throwing four touchdown passes before leaving due to dehydration and Gary Banks getting in the end zone three times in the rout. The Trojans outgained ASU 429 yards to 124 and allowed a mere eight first downs.
Stat Leaders: Alabama State - Passing: T'Chelop Woods, 7-14, 41 yds
Rushing: Alex Engram, 4-31. Receiving: Brandon Horace, 4-25
Troy - Passing: Omar Haugabrook, 20-32, 171 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT
Rushing:
Anthony Jones, 10-88. Receiving: Gary Banks, 8-75, 3 TD
Whoopty doo. What does it all mean Basil? ... The Trojans scored more points than they did in any game last year showing that Omar Haugabrook really does make a difference at quarterback. Helping the team's confidence was a wonderful performance by the defense keeping Alabama State from doing anything to make this interesting. No, Troy doesn't have a shot over the next three weeks at Florida State, Georgia Tech or Nebraska, but this offense showed that it'll potentially be hard to stop in Sun Belt play.

2006 Troy Preview

Troy Preview | Offense | Defense | Depth Chart | Further Analysis

There are seven reasons why Troy hasn't been a consistent power ... O, F, F, E, N, S and E.

The Trojan defense hasn't been a fluke over the last several years getting predictably rocked, at least most of the time, by the big names and coming down like a hammer against the mediocre. But the Trojans haven't been able to find any semblance of consistent offense over the last five years scoring in single digits a whopping 15 times since 2002.

The defense has had to carry things over the years, and when it hasn't been able to get the job done, it means a loss. For example, Troy is 0-13 since 2000 in games when the defense hasn't forced a turnover. This season, the offense has the potential to give the D a bit of a break.

It's no coincidence that the best offensive output in recent years meant a bowl bid in 2004, and there's a chance for this year's attack to be the best yet since the move to D-I with a wide open offense that'll use four receiver sets as well as traditional formations. The flexibility will play into the team's strength, wide receiver, with several good veterans like Smokey Hampton and Gary Banks who should shine with improved play at quarterback.

Ah, quarterback. The team's Achilles heel over the last few years with little to no consistency and always lacking the type of playmaker who can carry the team to big things. Welcome to the show, JUCO transfer Omar Hougabook. A good-sized passer with a live arm, he should finally be the one to be good enough to get the offense moving.

Of course, Troy will still be known for its defense. It'll be among the best in the Sun Belt despite some key losses and a big hope for several decent prospects to turn into stars. Safeties Sherrod Martin and Brannon Condren are among the best in a big year for Sun Belt safeties. Kenny Mainor is on the verge of huge things as a speed rushing end, and lightning fast outside linebacker Marcus Richardson should become a killer. Add to the mix a great return game and above-average kicking game and Troy will be one of the conference favorites.

After looking like the potential dominator in the Sun Belt, Troy has to prove that last season's setback was a fluke. The conference is better from top to bottom, but if the offense can generate a bit more production, the Trojans could finally pull off a conference title.

The Schedule: As always, there's a nice, long road trip to start the season with four straight away games after playing Alabama State. Fortunately, the biggest Sun Belt games are at home facing UL Monroe, North Texas and UL Lafayette in the first three conference battles and with Arkansas State down the road. If Troy believes it's good enough to win the title, it has to beat teams like Florida Atlantic, MTSU and FIU away from home.

Best Offensive Player: Senior WR Smokey Hampton. This could quickly change if QB Omar Haugebook is as good as advertised or if RB Kenny Cattouse has a breakout season. Hampton is a solid veteran with good deep speed on the X. If he has a huge year, chances are the offense will be far, far better.

Best Defensive Player: Junior FS Sherrod Martin. He does a little of everything well finishing second on the team in tackles while also making play after play after play against the pass. He's a tough hitter and will be the star of the defense until all the new starters get their feet wet.

Key player to a successful season: Junior QB Omar Haugabook. If the JUCO transfer is awful, that means it's back to the rotation of Julian Foster, Carl Meadows, and Larry Dockery. The team can't survive another year without good, steady quarterback play.

The season will be a success if ... Troy wins the Sun Belt title. Just about every team is coming into the season thinking it can be the Sun Belt champs, but Troy really has a shot if the offense is a little better and with the favorable conference schedule.

Key game: November 25th at MTSU. Troy hasn't been a rock at home in Sun Belt play, but if it can just hold serve at home and come up with a win at MTSU, the trip to the New Orleans Bowl will soon follow.

2005 Fun Stats:
- Sacks: Opponents 38 for 245 yards - Troy 17 for 132 yards
- Interceptions: Opponents 14 for 124 yards - Troy 5 for 18 yards
- Troy points in the win over Cal Poly: 27 - Troy average score in the other ten games: 14.8
