No. 1 USC 28 ... No. 16
Ole Miss 0
It took almost the entire first half for the USC offense to get on
track, but the defense never allowed the game to be remotely close. Ole
Miss couldn't do anything, despite trying three different quarterbacks
and pulling out every trick in the bag in an attempt to get the offense
moving. USC got a seven-yard Chauncey Washington touchdown run for a 7-0
first half lead, and John David Booty got his receivers in the act with
a 19-yard scoring pass to Patrick Turner and a 31-yard strike to Vidal
Hazelton for a 21-0 lead after three quarters. The USC D held Ole Miss
star running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis to 21 yards on 19 carries.
Player
of the Game - USC LB Brian Cushing made 13 tackles, four
tackles for loss and an interception
Fun Stat - Passing: USC 16 of 28 for 253 yards and
two touchdowns - Ole Miss 5 of 20 for 36 yards and four interceptions
No. 8 South Florida 12
... No. 21 SMU 10
In what was supposed to be a battle of hot young quarterbacks, neither
USF's Matt Grothe nor SMU's Justin Willis could get their respective
offenses going. The Bull defense turned out to be a little bit better,
with Jarriett Buie sacking Willis for a third quarter safety, and the
difference in the defensive slugfest. The Mustangs struck first with a
DeMyron Martin six-yard scoring run in the second quarter, but they
never got closer than the South Florida 29 for the rest of the game.
South Florida didn't fare much better, getting its touchdown on a
21-yard Mike Ford touchdown catch in the third quarter to tie it at ten.
Player
of the Game - South Floirda DE George Selvie made seven
tackles, two sacks, and a safety for the game-winning points
Fun Stat - Total yards: SMU 293 - South Florida 259
3rd
Round - No. 8 South Florida vs. No. 1 USC
No. 5 Florida State 34 ... No. 24
Navy 7
In order for Navy to beat Florida State, it would've needed to control
the clock and keep the Seminole offense off the field. It didn't happen.
Florida State's defense proved to be too quick, especially at
linebacker, limiting the Midshipmen from tearing off any big plays. The
Nole offense pounded away with Antone Smith and the running game, while
Drew Weatherford found Greg Carr for two jump-ball touchdowns and a 24-0
lead in the fourth quarter. Navy turned a fumble recovery on the FSU 29
into its only points, when Adam Ballard ended a five-play drive by
plowing in from five yards out.
Player
of the Game - Florida State S Myron Rolle made 15 tackles
and forced a fumble
Fun Stat - Rushing yards: Florida State 239 - Navy
200 ... Passing yards: Florida State 228 - Navy 20
No. 4 Oregon State 39 ... No. 13 Kentucky
20
Oregon State's offensive balance proved to be too much for the
overmatched Kentucky defense, as Yvenson Bernard ran for 150 yards and
two touchdowns and Sean Canfield threw for 311 yards and three scores.
Kentucky got on the board first with a field goal, but the Beavers
reeled off 25 straight points, complete with a fake extra point attempt
for a two-point conversion on an Alexis Serna run. The Wildcats appeared
to be back in it in the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown catch from
Dicky Lyons, but the Beavers answered right back with a 31-yard Bernard
scoring dash.
Player
of the Game - Oregon State QB Sean Canfield completed 21
of 36 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns
Fun Stat - Turnovers: Kentucky 4 - Oregon State 0
3rd Round - No.
5 Florida State vs. No. 4
Oregon State
No. 2 Michigan 35 ...
No. 15 Minnesota 10
Michigan's offense needed a quarter to get revved up, and then it
exploded on the Gophers with a 21-point second half thanks to Mario
Manningham touchdown grabs from 31 and 19 yards away and a two-yard
Mike Hart dash. Minnesota came up with a good drive to start the
second half, but had to settle for a field goal. The Wolverines
answered with the nail into the coffin on a six-yard Adrian
Arrington scoring grab. Ernie Wheelwright scored on a 45-yard pass
for Minnesota's only touchdown.
Player
of the Game - Michigan WR Mario Manningham caught seven
passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns
Fun Stat - Third down conversions: Michigan 5 of 10
- Minnesota 1 of 12
No. 7 Boston College 21 ... No. 11 Boise State
17
Boise State went 78 yards in 2:29 to get down to the BC three with five
seconds to play, but the Eagles held as Jolonn Dunbar stopped Ian
Johnson just short of the goal line. Johnson had been held in relative
check all game long, running for 71 yards on 26 carries, but the Bronco
offense cranked out two great scoring drives, culminating in two Jeremy
Childs touchdown grabs. BC was able to pound the ball all game long,
with L.V. Whitworth running for scores from 19 and three yards out, and
Matt Ryan barreled in for a one-yard quarterback sneak to take the lead
for good.
Player
of the Game - Boston College LB Jolonn Dunbar made 13
tackles including the game-saving stop to seal the win
Fun Stat - Time of possession: Boise State 30:00 -
Boston College 30:00
3rd Round -
No. 7 Boston College vs. No. 2 Michigan
No. 6 Oklahoma State 41 ... No. 10
Alabama 24
In an absolute stunner, Oklahoma State's offense could do no wrong, and
for the first half, Alabama's offense couldn't do anything right, as the
Cowboys jumped out to a 24-3 lead with scores on the team's first four
possessions in lightning fashion. OSU went 72-yards in four plays on its
first drive, finished off by a 34-yard Dantrell Savage touchdown run.
Adarius Bowman caught a 67-yard touchdown pass on OSU's next possession,
Jason Ricks nailed a 40-yard shot and Bobby Reid closed out a five-play,
62-yard drive with a nine-yard scoring run to close out the first
quarter. Alabama's defense finally started to come up with a few big
stops, but it was too little, too late. A 31-yard Ricks field goal made
it 27-3 before the Tide passing game got rolling. John Parker Wilson
threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by a 78-yard play
to D.J. Hall late in the third quarter.
Player
of the Game - Oklahoma State QB Bobby Reid completed 15
of 20 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns and ran eight times for 78
yards and a score
Fun Stat - Rushing yards: Oklahoma State 291 -
Alabama 29
No. 3 Ohio State 38 ... No. 14 Kansas State
0
Kansas State QB Josh Freeman threw four interceptions and lost a fumble,
and all five turnovers led to Ohio State points. Buckeye RB Chris Wells
ran for four touchdowns and Brian Robiskie made an over-the-shoulder
31-yard scoring catch for a 35-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. The
Wildcats only got across midfield three times and never got closer than
the OSU 29. Jamario O'Neal picked off two passes for the Buckeyes, and
Marcus Freeman intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.
Player
of the Game - Ohio State RB Chris Wells ran 19 times for
131 yards scoring touchdowns from five, 12, three, one and 14 yards.
Fun Stat - First downs: Ohio State 28 - Kansas
State 7
