ACC Game of the Week
East Carolina 34 ... North Carolina 31
ECU PK Ben Hartman missed three field goals, but he nailed a 39-yard shot with no time left on the clock to beat North Carolina. The two teams were in a shootout for three quarters, with Patrick Pinkney throwing three touchdown passes for East Carolina and UNC getting a huge day from Brandon Tate, but Hartman's field goal were the only points in the fourth. Pinkney connected with Chris Johnson on touchdown passes from 78 and 24 yards out, and Johnson added a four-yard touchdown run, while Tate caught touchdown.

ACC Player of the Week
Clemson QB Cullen Harper was 20-of-26 for 270 yards and five touchdown passes in the 49-26 win over UL Monroe.

Conference Roundup
Boston College … BC won by bombing away on Wake Forest, and now it won by grinding it out against NC State. Oh yeah, and there were seven turnovers to help matters. The Eagle defense has been swarming, and most importantly so far, it's doing whatever it can to force the big play. Ball security will now be a major issue for anyone playing the Eagles, and if the ground game and D are rocking, this will be a nasty team to beat. Remember, Matt Ryan is still the best player in the ACC.
Clemson … UL Monroe was never going to be a threat to Clemson, but this might turn out to have been the Tigers' most important game of the season. With Cullen Harper throwing five touchdown passes, and with a layup against Furman next week, now all the ACC defensive coordinators have to actually worry about the pass. The last thing the rushing tandem of C.J. Spiller and James Davis needs is more room to run, and they'll be sure to get it. Oh sure, the Tigers receivers helped by taking some short passes the distance, but Harper made the throws he needed to make to wake the team up.
Duke … At the moment, everything has to go perfectly for Duke to come up with a win. The other team has to be mediocre, make errors, and not explode. Virginia helped out with a variety of different mistakes and inefficient offense, but the Blue Devils had a hard time taking advantage of all the opportunities. Joe Surgan missed three field goals, Thaddeus Lewis didn't complete half his passes, and there was no ground game against an average Virginia run defense. Three more road games in a row aren’t going to help matters.
Florida State … Florida State has hardly looked like a world-beater to start the year, but it's not quite time to completely panic. Chalk up the struggles against UAB to the short week. Remember, the Noles had an emotional opener just four days before facing the Blazers and were hardly focused. Even so, a good team blows out a bad Blazer squad, and the Noles couldn't do it. The secondary was a bit off, the running game didn't show up, and the offense reverted to its old ways with Drew Weatherford bombing away. Three turnovers, 12 penalties for 131 yards; the team needs to quickly come up with a good game to finally kick its season off the right way.
Georgia Tech… Don't dismiss a blowout win over a team like Samford, even if it was expected. Coming off the high of the Notre Dame blasting, the team appears to have extreme confidence that things are humming as well as possible before diving into the ACC season. Basically, the coaching staff asked the offense to get off to a fast start, it did, and the Tech offensive line dominated from there. It would've been nice to have seen Taylor Bennett throw the ball more than nine times, just to get more work in before facing Boston College, but that's nitpicking.
Maryland … Uh oh. Maryland's offense, especially the line, struggled way too much with Florida International in a win that was far, far closer than it should've been. Jordan Steffy and the passing game was efficient at times, but there weren't any home runs with pass protection that broke down way too often. A nasty four-game stretch against West Virginia, at Wake Forest, at Rutgers and Georgia Tech is ahead, and to survive, the offense has to be far sharper. The defense was great outside of one big play, and it's going to have to be even better.
Miami … Oklahoma is one of the nation's best teams, if not number one overall, but for a Miami team still in desperate need of a big game to turn things around, this was an embarrassment. The defense was supposed to be among the best in America, and it didn't exactly quit in the second half, but it sure wasn't flying around once it became obvious the offense wasn't going to do anything. The biggest problem is at quarterback; there isn't one. Kirby Freeman simply isn't a BCS conference passer, and Kyle Wright isn't able to move the ball. On the plus side, Javarris James had a few moments running the ball, despite only getting eight carries, and Florida International is up next week. The Canes have to use the game to settle in on one quarterback and sink or swim with him.
North Carolina … The defense is going to be a work in progress, as East Carolina exposed with the passing game, but under Butch Davis, that'll quickly come around. The big concern was the offense, and it appears to be in good hands as T.J. Yates had a terrific game, and Brandon Tate was all but unstoppable on his two touchdown catches and a punt return for a score. UNC needs to be explosive to make up for a lack of running game, and now the defense has to start coming up with more stops. That shouldn't be a problem against Virginia.
NC State … How ironic that Tom O'Brien's return to BC, where he put together smart, tough teams that didn't make a whole bunch of mistakes, was marred by his NC State team that got shoved around and made a whole slew of mistakes. There aren't any offensive playmakers at the moment, and there's even a major deficiency at quarterback where Harrison Beck made way too many errors, despite throwing for 321 yards. The offense desperately needs to tune up against Wofford before facing Clemson and Louisville in what could be ugly bloodbaths.
Virginia
… It's not like Virginia didn't do everything possible, at least on special teams, to give the game to Duke. The offense was inefficient, the running game, outside of a big run from Cedric Peerman, didn't do nearly enough, and there's a concern at quarterback with Jameel Sewell struggling, and Peter Lalich looking better when he got his chances. The lack of a top number one receiver will be a problem all year long. Right now it's tight end Tom Santi, and a prayer for someone else to produce.
Virginia Tech … The Hokies have to have a short memory. Whether it was 8-7 or 48-7, the loss to LSU was going to sting. Confidence, especially in the offense, is going to be a problem after Sean Glennon was quickly replaced by Tyrod Taylor. While that might be a step back to eventually take a giant leap forward, that only works if the defense is playing well. A national title-caliber D doesn't allow close to 600 yards to anyone, but after facing Ohio, William & Mary and North Carolina in the next three weeks, there will be plenty of time for Taylor, if he turns into the starter, to jell.
Wake Forest… Even in a loss, there were positive signs for the Demon Deacons. The secondary was better after being torched against Boston College, and despite Nebraska doing everything possible to stop the run, the ground game still got 236 yards. Brett Hodges was solid, but his interception in the end zone late was an inexperienced mistake. Basically, the team knows it can hang with the better teams, and now it needs to roll over Army just to get a little confidence before dealing with Maryland.
